  • Kola Shippentower, based in Pendleton, Oregon, is a fierce advocate for her community and culture. As an Elder Support Specialist, she delivers meals, helps with household tasks, and provides companionship, all while ensuring the wisdom and traditions of her people endure. Raised to honor elders, Kola emphasizes the importance of community-viewed traditionally as family-where each generation plays a key role in preserving their way of life. She focuses on empowering youth to carry forward these teachings, navigating the balance between tradition and modernity.
Driven by personal tragedy, Kola also champions the cause of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW). After her cousin’s death, she turned her grief into action, founding the Wisawca Project, a safety consulting initiative aimed at protecting her community and holding law enforcement accountable. Kola's work is "heart work," fueled by the strength of her ancestors. Her mission is not just to win today's battles but to prepare the next generation to continue the fight for survival and justice, ensuring their legacy endures.
