This soft spoken ASMR video is about Easter Island, its mysterious moais, and what we know of its history. I hope you like it!
As indicated in the video, you can vote in the comments for one of the next topics I will tell you about. Why is it that I can listen to these over and over? :D It's so strange, like, the actual subject being spoken about is secondary almost a bonus compared with the primary relaxing sensation by the way it is being spoken. Great video. Personally I would like to see a video on (B) medieval castles. I'm obsessed with everything from that time period.
I was always super interested in Easter Island as a child. Had the chance to study it a little bit more in depth in an environmental impact course I did a few years ago and found it so fascinating to learn about where the inhabitants came from and how they essentially built up the island to the point of non-sustainability then just disappeared all within such a relatively short time frame.
I know this is a 9 year old comment - just wanted to point out for anyone reading it now, that the "unsustainable self-destruction" theory - is dead. In fact, it was pretty racist too.
For centuries, Euro-explorers were told, by the natives, "our ancestors didn't log-roll the statues into place - they walked them."
Well, why believe primitive, savage people had advanced megalithic structure moving techniques involving genius-level understanding of leverage - when you can just write them off as stupid? Aw man, we can't maintain racist views of technical supremacy if we admit they were this smart! No no, they were stupid! So stupid in fact, they cut down all the palms on the island for log rollers -and doomed themselves!
Well:
Recently, it was proven you CAN move the statues with only ropes. Upright, yank left side to pivot the right side a step forward. Yank right side, left takes a step forward.
No logs needed. At all.
The palms all died - due to accidentally-introduced rats that ate the seeds. (And probably new plant diseases too.)
Turns out, the Moai statues were not a doom, or even a drain on society. They were beneficial. Just like the pyramids of Egypt, Stonehenge, ziggurats etc - food-based economies suffer up to 80% unemployment in the off-season. So, governments offered workers the chance to earn back a portion of their taxes through labor. On anything. All needful jobs filled? Ok, build something. Make something. Art. Anything!
Including monumental/spiritual statuary.
If more people understood the racist origins of the self-destruction theory: maybe it wouldn't be so prevalent in the modern day. Alas, the myth remains appealing and "seems true" - to everyone concerned about our modern unsustainable practices. Well that is a good concern to have - but it's immoral to project our modern-day problems on an ancient, proud culture - and make them out to be idiots.
We must find another example of unsustainability causing disaster.
Think about all the horrors the natives endured at the hands of outsiders. Near total annihilation.
The least we can do is put an end to slandering them - and quit blaming the victims.

I've always admired Captain Cousteau's oceanographic documentaries, and believe your style of presentation would be well suited to deliver a talk on either of these subjects.

I am a big fan of your channel and listen to atleast two stories each day. I would like to hear more Asian Stories (Indian History, Chinese, Arab, Far East). I would like to suggest biographies of famous people not just middle age but even 19th and 20th Century such as Edison, Martin Luther King, Lincoln. It would be great to cover elements from WW1 and WW2 such as Pearl Harbour or role of Churchill. Another great idea is to read famous plays such as Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Jane Austen etc

As individuals or societies we continually reinvent our past, or future, in terms of the present. All mysterious relics of the past (such as megalithic structures) have to be explained or our own reality looks fragile. We do not know why these sculptures were made, only the creators know - all our versions, probably the stories on the Islanders, will be fiction - which is fine. Deconstruction of history is not a bad thing. I enjoy your talks.

ian pirrall Thank you. Actually I can count fast (about 1-2 seconds by vote maybe; even if there are hundreds it remains faster than create a survey on another site...
