      I bought Seagate Barracuda. It came a month - there were bad secotrs. Interestingly, when the disk was new and empty - it did not show any bad sectors. I returned it under warranty. Fortunately, I got a refund. I will now order WD20EZBX.

    It is so important to mention only to buy a HDD from a seller you know they will securly package the HDD. Never buy a HDD from an unknown seller or with no info about secure packaging. I learned my lesson the hard way when my hard drive was sliding around losely in a thin cardboard package without any protection.

      I would advise against using a small SSD for boot, specially if you are a developer. Some programs require being installed in the same drive as the system or just do not let you choose. Also, many programs save cache and temporary files in the system drive, so it gets flooded quickly, and cleaning it is time consuming.

    Been using my WD Blue laptop HDD eversince from 2012 and right now still up and working fine absolutely with no SMART error results. Performance is still the same although it's just 5400rpm.
    Compared to my Samsung Spinpoint a product of Seagate HDD, it also lasts longer for me too but sadly it's now absolutely dead and no longer detects to the PC.
    By looking to your test benchmarks, WD HDDs favors more spindown with short period of idle and somehow it can't always manage to get at good results of reading speed. Dunno but you guys can correct me but this is just my personal experience of using my oldest HDD that still works as new right now.

    • @Jeymez
      @Jeymez 2 роки тому

      Realmjumper: interesting you got two hard drives, but when paired with an SSD as a boot drive increases more performance. that wasn't the case with older Seagate and Western Digital especially. i had a 1TB WD Blue back on my old Sandy bridge i5 2500, and even at 7200rpm it was much slower. that 256mb of cache is a big improvement over 64mb which is what it used to be, i replaced my old WD Blue with the newer updated 2TB, and my SSD no longer feels like it's being held back. on my older WD Blue i almost exclusively relied on the SSD to do everything, but ever since i paired my Samsung 860 Evo Pro 512gb, the performance is so much better.
      now transferring files and games is a breeze lol.
      hard drives benefit from a Solid State, but back in the day even with a SSD install there were still times your computer would run slow. so whatever Western Digital did and Seagate as well since it's there closest competition is so much better now.

    The reliability is more important than speed. Generally all hard drives are very fast today. If a program or game comes with thousands of files extracted in linux style, the fault lies with that product. Back in old times files were always grouped to reduce stress on the system. The best configuration is hard drives for archival of installers and media, which will be accessed sequentially, and a small SSD for currently installed software.
    The issue with Barracuda DM is that it is an SMR drive and the cheapest of their offerings. I prefer to use VN or VX which are CMR. For Seagate there are tools for disabling head parking. I don't know if there are for WD. VX drives sometimes are available second-hand from surveillance operators for less money.

    • @angrysocialjusticewarrior
      @angrysocialjusticewarrior Рік тому

      Bro, are you still stuck in 2014 or something? A hard drive for archival of media and a "small" ssd for installed software? Who even uses hard drives anymore?
      The best solution in 2023 is to throw away all your hard drives and just buy a 4tb ssd. if you have a lot of media you can buy a 4tb ssd for software and system, and then add another 4tb ssd for media storage. And every ssd you buy should be nvme gen 4, not sata.
      Hard drives are ancient things from the past. They are only useful for those who are running servers.

    • @j7ndominica051
      @j7ndominica051 Рік тому

      Basic SSDs from AliExpress are approaching the price of hard drives when on discount. But not ultra fast or high capacity units. Currently they top out at 2TB, and some people question the reliability. No need for high speeds for loading films or music.

    • @hercules4562
      @hercules4562 Рік тому

      @@angrysocialjusticewarrior I disagree, if a HD gives a problem you can format it and use programs to recover files, something that is impossible on an SSD, saying to throw the HDD away is a big stupidity

    • @angrysocialjusticewarrior
      @angrysocialjusticewarrior Рік тому

      @@hercules4562 Why would it be impossible to recover files from an SSD? And SSD does not permanently delete files. It only overwrites.
      So when you "delete" a file on an ssd, the ssd controller just makes the file unreadable on the memory chip. The file will only truly be deleted when the ssd gets full and the controller decided to place new files over the unreadable files.
      So as long as the deleted file is not overwritten, you can use special software to recover it.
      So like I said, hard drives are ancient technology and have no place being used in 2023. Throw them away.

    I have a Seagate Barracuda 2Tb, exactly this code ST2000DM008. After exactly 3 years of use in my personal computer, during saving a word file, it begun to work slow, and to refuse to save the file. After few trials to copy and to save different files to this disk, the speed of operations was very slow. I suspected it to be on the way to the disks cemetery, and I have saved all important data to another disks, the neccessarily time to do this being very long. After all, I have performed surface tests and system file check, the system file check delivered an error. I decided to format it, but the format operation was not finished. Has no bad sectors, but can t be formated. I have western digital disks of low capacity (max 650 GB), 10 years old, and works. I am dissapointed about Seagate disks. I decided to replace it with a SSD unit.

    The best thing is, Samsung has the most power on time (32130 hours) and still going strong while the WD ones only has 7753 hours on them and already failing.

    I bought the 2tb seagate barracuda 2nd day and it was telling me disk write error and was being super glitchy i just wrote a return email to the retailer and with that money ill get a wd blue since i heard theyre the more reliable company

      Update in case anyone is curious, managed to fix the seagate barracuda but it only ended up working for about 3 months after and then it stopped working again now it didnt even get recognized by the pc so i gave up on it and ended up going for solid state drivers, havent experienced any issues with my samsung SSD so far except for a faulty sata cable but that was a quick fix.
      Imo if youre looking for something reliable and fast a ssd will be better but if ur interested in TB/$ then get a hdd theyre cheaper but slower

    I'm going to buy a new disk, probably refurbished. Should I first test it like this when the new one is empty, or is it best to fill it all the way and then test it?
    Testing would take days because of the large capacity.
    What is a safer test, when the hdd is empty or full?

    • @KnowledgeSharingTech
      @KnowledgeSharingTech  18 днів тому +1

      I advise against buying used HDDs. But if you choose to buy a used one, you should test all its surface for errors. chkdsk can do this

      @@KnowledgeSharingTech Do you think that "refurbished" are not good regardless of the fact that they have a 2-year warranty?
      In my place, they say that the hdd is not "refurbished" but brand new, but I don't believe them, it's simply cheap enough to be brand new. But they guarantee that it is not refurbished. That's why I want to test it thoroughly...
      Would hdd sentinel help or must someone else. I prefer a free program.

    I have 2 of these Seagate drives and I regret it. They are the first drives with SMR technology that I have. Reading is no problem. But when writing very big files the speed goes down to about 20 MBps after a couple of seconds. This is unacceptable. I will buy a Western Digital 2 TB. Is SMR too but hopefully faster when writing.

    Arghh... I can't make a choice for 4TB. WD blue (256MB/5400) vs Seagate Barracuda (256MB/5400) vs Toshiba x300 (256Mb/7200)
    They're all same price, x300 has great spec but how reliable is it?

    Hi there, thanks for your sharing. I need a 3.5'" 2 TB to 4 TB SATA HDD for movie or film data storage and attach it to Zidoo Media player for watching movie on TV purpose. The question is which one of the HDD from your review suit that task most? I consider to choose one of Caviar Blue or Barracuda, and also other one from Toshiba PC 300. In term of reliability and long term, which one will you recommend? And for information this HDD, I will put it in Orico multi bay Hard drive enclosure with other HDD from the same Brand.

      Both drives are still working now and in my experience, they are equally reliable. Some viewers made comments that they had problems with Seagate drives.

    Last week I bought two 2TB Seagate Barracuda and today I have returned them. The following happens to both of them. Since I want them to backup data, I have to copy 280GB in one go. When it starts to copy, everything goes perfectly, but as it warms up, the speed begins to drop drastically until before reaching 100Gb copied, it stops copying. He enters into a redundant noise wanting to write but without advancing in writing. When I cancel, the drive goes on and on trying to write (I assume the buffer is full). I try to turn off the PC but without success, I have to force the shutdown. After this, the disk becomes unreadable and needs to be reformatted. I have tried it on Windows 10 and Linux 20.04, same result. I have tried it as an internal hard drive and in a USB-3 rack, same result. Obviously the problem is with the disks. *** If someone buys this model, it can be useful if you use it for small installations of a few Gb, such as Backup of massive data IT DOESN'T WORK.

    WARNING this SeaJunk Barra-Couldn't drive is rubbish. Bought a 2TB brand-new but could not be recognised by the BIOS, instead making a regular once-per-second buzzing noise, presumably the sound of the head(s) trying to find something.
    I will be sticking to Toshiba and WD from here on...

    Very impressive review. I have been using the Seagate Barracuda 2TB HDD on a docking station and has been giving me a little trouble copying files. Sometimes the computer does not recognize it as a USB DRIVE, need to shut off and turn on several times until it kicks in. Could it be due to a malfunction? I am using a brand new Maiwo K3082H HDD docking station USB HUB*3. I used to have the same problem with an older docking station that I threw away and thought it was defective. Could the problem be with the Seagate?
    Thank you.

    • @KnowledgeSharingTech
      @KnowledgeSharingTech  Рік тому +1

      You need to troubleshoot this problem to isolate it. Is it form the docking station or is it from the HDD?
      1- Connect the HDD directly to your computer and use it extensively. If it keeps working, then the problem is from the dock.
      2- For the dock, it takes a power input, make sure it is powered. Also try to use the HDD alone on the dock and then also try to connect the HDD to other ports on the dock.
      Good luck
