@@marions7423 Ukraine isn’t the Third World. I don’t know why you would think the children need financial support. The families over there are the same as anywhere else in the developed world. Some rich, some poor but virtually all capable of looking after themselves. The animals, especially dogs on the street can be treated very cruelly and need help to be taken off the streets and given places of safety. None of the animal shelters are opulent and very few are adequately funded. Most like Lords just get by.

Hey JohnnyFD, thanks for taking on the responsibility for giving a homeless dog a home! Extremely generous of you. Please, please allow the dog to sit with you inside the apartment. Dogs are extremely clean & will incredibly love being with human connection sitting on the couch or floor beside you. I think the noise from the traffic below the balcony will scare the dog witless especially considering its previous environment. The amount of love & loyalty dogs give to their owners is truly humbling. I would definitely advise to purchase a harness rather than a collar for Lords benefit & comfort. Dogs are incredible family members. Mistakes will happen, its natural, but usually very small & easily cleaned up. Please give him lots of emotional support & you will be given it back. Some dogs I've used a harness. Others a Martingale collar. Some a head harness, especially aggressive pullers, and they've never needed it for long. Our final step in the potty training process is to have the dog sleep in the bed with us. Once they reach that step they understand to not have an accident, and dogs don't normally want to soil the area they rest in. The exceptions I've observed are anxiety or results of human abuse keeping them locked in a kennel past when they can hold eliminating.
Dogs don't have memories like humans. They remember a hurting hand or foot /the movement that that human did to hurt them rather. They can be reset just like that with a new owner. Seen it over and over. Clear message about boundaries etc will set things straight = happy doggo Also, A big No-no to leaving them in a yard or balcony. Couch or beds are for humans, special treat for dogs.
Keeping him isolated on the balcony will cause him separation anxiety and make him more likely to show destructive behaviour, not to mention how cold it will be in the winter and hot in the summer with all those windows conducting heat. Placing his bed near yours will help him feel secure until he settles in. You need to build trust with him and show him he's part of your family. Sit on the floor at eye level with him and ignore him until he's ready to come to you. When he does, tell him how good he is and reward him with a small treat like Pedigree Mini Bites. They're greatfor training with. You'll need a throw for your settee incase he does jump up on it while your away. Also, some good quality hard rubber chew toys like the Kong Extreme Goodie Bone that you can place a treat inside to keep him occupied for longer. Finally bud, your days of a hair free home, car and clothing are well and truly over. I highly recommend the Dyson Animal Ball and a lint roller. 😅

Even in peaceful countries like England and Australia there are so many dogs in shelters. Just abandoned or surrendered. Many from irresponsible back yard breeders. So cruel and inhumane.
As a foster dog guy my best advice is to always put yourselves in their shoes. So much stimulation and confusion going from a home to a shelter to a strangers car to a new world. It’s scary! Get on her level. Try and see through their eyes. Go slow and open your world to them at their speed. Trust me, they bond to you and trust you quickly when they see that you’re “one of their own” and is the leader. Go slow and be patient. Let her in the house. She will feel so much more comfortable. Get a harness. A dog like that will choke himself and he looks like he’s one of those that will try and dip out of her collar to get free. Lastly, keep kibble or treats on you in the beginning. If he takes the stairs? Treat. Goes potty? Treat. Sit, stay, shake? Treat.
Absolutely! Positive reinforcement is key. Negative reinforcement should only be used in the most extreme circumstances (such as emergency recall). I use regular kibble as treats, that way I can keep an eye on how many calories the dog is getting - too many treats will ake them fat AND sick. Good luck with Lord, Johnny!
Johnny good to see you got a friend! A few things from someone who has 9 dogs…8 Labs and a rough Collie…get a kennel or crate for Lord. Keep it open when you’re home as a safe place…never use putting him in as punishment. If you put him in an area when you go out think of anything in that room as expendable. No matter how good Lord is, you step out for coffee and come back to a chewed up pillow all across his space..that’s what the crate is for…either open cage type or airline transport type doesn’t matter. I feed dry food topped with cooked chicken gizzards or chicken livers and use that broth to soak…chicken cooked in pressure cooker. I saw Royal Canin at that store it’s pretty good but always try small bag first see what Lord likes. Remember when you change food you may have a day or two with loose poops…add a little cooked rice to his food to help with that for a few days. Use the 3-3-3 rule…3 days to decompress from the move…3 weeks to feel comfortable in the new home …and 3 months to really bond with you and accept you as his buddy and friend. Lots of tips online but you should keep him with you when you’re home, I know looks like Lord has an undercoat and sheds…maybe some Husky or German Shepherd in his genes…but the one thing to remember is a dog is a pack animal and once he bonds with you he’ll always want to be with you even stronger, even more than food or water.
You should get a harness for lord. It’s really bad on the dogs neck / vocal cords when they pull so hard and the collar chokes them. It’s easier to control with a harness and then he can’t chew through.
Please PLEASE get him a harness!! He needs water after walking, and please walk him every day! He is use to being with other dogs and people, please let him be with you and not out on the balcony for a few days.
It is good that he isn't staying in the shelter so he will be less inclined to start barking like the others. I'm glad you will both have each other. You will need to buy a leash that is reinforced so he can't chew through. If he is nervous, try to sit with him and pat him. When it gets dark he will probably feel calmer. Try to stay with him. It is good that he is licking your arm while you are patting him. He is bonding with you.
You are doing a good deed Johnny, but be aware a shelter dog is a bigger responsibility that asks for more skill and patience from the owner than getting a puppy from a breeder...it will be hard, but don't give up...find his interests (balls or treats) and you can easily get him to do what you want (even stop pulling on the leash) by rewarding him for good behavior...Also it will take a week, maybe two for him to totally relax, set your walks either a couple of hours before feeding time or couple of hours after (to avoid bloat which could lead to the stomach tangling itself and then death) and always tell him his a good boy! That's a must, good luck 👍

It is wonderful you adopted him. I have rescued many dogs in my life including a Cuban street dog. Currently I have a pitbull female rescued from a puppy farm breeder. Once Lordy is bathed and groomed bring him inside so he knows he is part ls your pack and can bond with you. Isolating him there is certainly better than a cage but working with him and letting him know he belongs is so important to a rescue. My pitbull spent 5 years in a cage . Although she has her dog bed in the kitchen she much prefers watching tv on the couch beside me . I dont suggest everyone wants dogs on their furniture but he does need to feel part of the family and not segregated from you while inside. Good luck.
And I just wanted to add , he is overly excited in the morning because he has been confined all night and needs to pee. Sitting and waiting until he calls down is not productive and cruel in a way. He needs to get outside asap and do his business .
Oh, Lordy (the Dog)! You are such a good-hearted guy, Johnny. But whether it's your car or your domicile or now a dog, you get me to talking very loudly at you on my computer screen. I had my dog for several months and she was biting dogs on walks, so I took her for training and then I said I love you to her and it made such a great difference. They really do understand our emotions!
Dogs can be cute and etc... I remember taking on a dog for 14 days. He was a retired police dog, German Shepard. Massive dominance behaviour on his part. I grew up with similar dogs, but he was hard to handle. It went well after the first day and half. You just have to feel each other out. And establish boundaries and rules, while giving affection etc.
I think I deleted my comment some how. Congrats !! You’re going to love him so much. It will all come together. I did the same back in 2021. Eventually you figure it out. Get him a harness so you don’t have to choke him with the collar. Keep them on same food. Get him good brand of food. It’s ok to let him roam around the apartment. Just have to have him on a pee poop schedule. Like 8 am then lunch then dinner then before bed type thing. Research what foods to NOT give him. He will be fine inside your apartment he may even sleep with you. Also have lots of dog poop bags.
You need a full harness for him and possibly a pulling buddy collar to help him stop pulling-leash hooks under and to front so when he pulls, it pulls his head down and to side wo the pinching collars. Put a blanket over his crate,, it will make him feel more secure and enclosed in his safe space. Take him to vet and obedience school so you learn how to deal w each other. Our last adopted doggo didn't eat for days. Access to balcony off limits till you are better acquainted. You need to let him get used to house, familiar w smells, rooms etc.
What a sweetheart. He's absolutely adorable! 😍 The Furminator is a little pricey, but worth it. I've used them for years and it helps pull out more loose hair than a normal brush. I'd also recommend getting him a harness for going on walks. It's really easy to slip out of a collar with the leash attached, especially with there being cars around and with him being a little timid and unaware of his new environment. I became a harness convert years ago when my dog slipped out of her collar in a busy shopping center parking lot and ran back to my car. She had never been to the pet store before, and probably panicked thinking it was the vet.

If he keeps pulling on the leash (which is dangerous for his throat btw) do this: when he starts pulling, do NOT pull him back as with this you reinforce his behaviour !! Instead, when he starts pulling you immediatelly just turn round, you give a short commant like 'come on', and you walk in exactly the opposite direction with him; the moment he starts pulling again, you again turn round with the short command, and walk in the opposite direction. Even though this walking up and down will look crazy - you do this until he stops pulling and may looks at you like "what the heck is this human doing?" And with this, you start winning: NOW you got his attention!! The doggy will learn to figure out that he may well get where he wants to go BUT only if he does not pull on the leash! Trust me, this works and it stimulates the dog's brain to figure out what you expect from him. He looks intelligent and with such methods, you make yourself interesting for the doggo.
Hi Jonny, please don’t leave him on the balcony or close the door when he is there. If you do he will try to force us way out! Dogs don’t like being confined or left alone. He will get used to the balcony only if he has access to the house. Make sure you do not leave him alone on the house for a few weeks and never leave him on his own for longer than 4 hours after that. If you do your apartment will be chewed and scratched up! I’m talking ripped furniture and the doors scratched up! I hope you know what’s coming. While your with him, he’ll be right as rain!

Have you ever heard of a wolf den? Dog's prefer small places. You're applying your human preferences to the dog to want a big space, for them it's more stressful to have to guard it.
@@JohnnyFD Maybe I’m not a professor but I’m sure a wolf den is not a metal cage with a closed door that you are forced to stay on against your will. If I were anthropomorphising it would be like comparing a bedroom to a prison. I’m not being pedantic but I have a dog who is 14 years old and if I had no choice but to leave him on a cage on his own I would not like it. It’s just my opinion and not something I expect everyone to agree with but I actually know that my dog would much prefer to roam freely around the house and that’s good enough for me!
He has to have some time to get used to all the changes, to get used to you. It will take some time for him to settle in nd his real personality to shine. Let him come inside the home with you. You can throw sheets over the furniture, the relationship will grow much closer and the quiet will calm him faster. Thank you for adopting him. Many people adopt and regret right away not understanding it takes some time for the dog to settle in. He looks like a sweet little guy. Enjoy being a dog dad!

Dude, take it from someone who has been owning dogs all his life..... you really should not keep your dog on the balcony!!!!! Its clear that he/she is a very gentel animal and needs to be around you, not alone in the balckony. Also your dog is big and the would like to move around the rooms, feel that he/she is apart of your family. He/she will not ever feel at home, if you dont let him/her sniff around the aparment and move freely. If thats how your going to keep the dog, then do him/her a favour and take him/her back to the shelter.. so someone who really knows how to take care of a dog, can have a chance and also the dog can have better life then sitting alone on the balckony and only waiting when you come and take him to walks!
Johnny, I know how difficult to be an owner of one dog, but I have learned from experience that it would make a dog's life so much better in quality if you get two dogs in your home. We all live busy lives at certain times, and for a dog to have another dog to keep it company will just increases both of their lives exponentially. You will benefit by not feeling guilty leaving your dog alone in a small apartment when you are out doing your things like going to a party, meeting friends at restaurants that do not allow dogs, and meeting people at their office where no dogs are allow. I like a male dog with a female dog. Male and female are usually best match for getting along with each other. A female dog will calm down the male dog a lot. They even makes collars that helps you walk both dogs at once.
While I agree two dogs are better than one, he’s only fostering. Unless he decides to keep him permanently, a second dog will make it harder to adopt them out. They usually get bonded and bonded pairs are hard to find families for.
Johnny, get a harness instead of that collar to walk the dog, way more comfortable for him since he won't be choking all the time and will make it easier for him to follow you on a leash.
He drags because he's full of energy... You can never outwalk a dog on leash. But he needs to get rid of that ENERGY somehow. See if you could find a tennis or basketball court etc, that you could let him free in? See if he likes to play with a tennis ball etc there... If you get him to run once a day, he'll be much better with his energy - and he'll be easier to walk on leash!!!! For walks (not training), as I suggested below, a Flexi is helpful with dogs you can't otherwise let free. :-)
My dog had never been in a house only outdoor kennel for 2 years but no accidents inside house. They learn they want their kennel clean and go outside for bathroom
There are toilets you can buy for dogs on balconies. They are square patches of grass with drainage underneath. You can train him with treats to use it. Then he can be let in and out when he needs it. You won’t need to keep him on the balcony once fully trained. I’ve trained mine to use fake grass in a gated dog run that I built using gates. Buy toys and exercise him so he doesn’t destroy the apartment. A dog is only as good as their owner ❤ I hope you bring him in during sirens ❤ Congrats on becoming a fluffy parent!

Johnny, your dog is about the same size as my Australian Shepard! He eats 1 1/2 Cups of food twice a day (with green beans and pumpkin). I think your going to need a bigger bag of food! A harness would help better control him. You can use a bottle from the hair section with water to spray him when you misbehave when you are training him. UA-cam probably has good training videos. He definitely needs toys to chew on. A bored dog gets into trouble. Try to keep him in the balcony only when you are gone or at bedtime. No, don't put him in a crate, Johnny. That is like imprisoning him. He seems happy on his blanket on the terrace of your apartment. You could buy him a dog bed even though he might not be with you permanently. The shelter would be able to use it if he were adopted. If you bond with him, he could end up as your dog.
I trained my dog to use a crate. He now only uses it at the vets and groomers. He uses the bed and couch at home. Dogs don’t need crates once they are housed trained. The idea of a ‘den’ is a myth created by those who need to justify a crate.

He's exploring, let him smell everywhere and pee on everything outside so he gets familiar. For medium dog, it should be arround 1.2% x 25kg dogweight = 0.3 kg (300 gramm ) a day, iff the dog gets skinny or to fat adjust the amount. you bought that cheaper dogfood it can be taken more of it. I see that petshop has the Britt dogfood brand thats more quality food for doggo
I urge you to start cooking food for Lord. That dry food is made of terrible ingredients. It will lesson your vet bills. Lots of resources online. Also, you need to allow him to come inside the actual apartment. The balcony situation is absurd.
100% the open window on the balcony is crazy and at the very least you can get catches for the double glazed window to still keep the fresh air but keep it closed enough so the pet doesn't get out. But as always Johnny will know better. 🙄
No solid commercial kibble, and based on his size 1 - 2 Tablespoons of kefir per day, given the dog doesn't have a dairy issue, which in that case you would use water kefir. Never feed the dog peanut butter. It's terrible for them and creates candida yeast. Throw bits of veggies in for treats when you're food prepping. I had my dogs including fosters trained to sit at the edge of the kitchen doorway and I would throw chunks if green pepper, carrots, and fruit to them. One dog in particular loved carrots the most.

First he needs a harness, the pulling on the neck isn't good. All dogs need is love, food and safety as well as good brushes and tickles with lots of walks. You will do amazing. When he's settled and trusting you then you will see the difference. Also get safety catches on the window as he will jump out if he gets scared. It's like child locks. I have them on mine so they only open a little and my cat can't escape. I got them from amazon. Please don't keep him locked on the balcony. He has gone from one cage to the next doing that. You need to allow him from roam of your home.

I was also surprised you keep him in balcony, but assuming its just for training purposes that its his place really. As in Uk people also don't have space to keep dogs so people just let them roam the house so they have more space, which obviously requires more grooming and cleaning house of fur, but well dog is like a baby that needs your attention. Im just curious to see how this will play out when you will get bored and want to travel, where will dog go, with you or you will just dump it on someone.
May I advice you to watch some of Cesar Millan's Show, or just watch some of his content on youtube. You'll be a happy dog owner. Having a dog in a quite closed and small space, specially in a flat like residence can be challenging for you and the dog. P.S : You've done a great job by calming down and not letting the dog get too excited, and taking a walk regularly with lord. EDIT: LOL.. forget my advice.. just watched till end of video.. you actually knew Cesar Millan.. Good for you Sir.. ! LOL
My advice exactly. I knew he was familiar with Cesar's methods before he said it. He just need to watch several hours more. Especially how to be a pack leader. How to stop walking if dog pulls. Calm energy and then start walking when dog relaxes. Not when dog decides to walk. Quick, exact timing when dog realizes when it has done good. Patience, lots of patience.

Johnny said it’s 10 or 12 times the size of the crate where he used to stay! And he gets to see Outdoors, be in the sunshine, see birds fly by etc. I’m sure Johnny will walk him very frequently!
Also I think Lord could use a good daily brushing to Minimise the hair, 😅 and he’ll love it, it’s been hot out there too Johnny, those balcony’s mine included can be like green houses my clothes dry quite fast in the heat, open windows will definitely be needed!
I guess what everyone is telling you that you will need a harness with the point of connection between his shoulders. This is because a collar will cause damage to his neck. Also apartment living means that he will need to be out every four hours most of the time. Dogs that are force to hold their pee will develop kidney damage over time. He will need some squeak toys to entertain himself. Teach him some tricks and commands so you have a way to communicate. I feed my dogs raw meat only and vegs that I eat. Smart move to get small amount to see what he likes. We are a dog, horse, and parrot family for decades. Put him into his cage at your home so he will feel safe. He drinks water he will need to be taken out to pee. Did you buy treats to use to develop friendship and training? Just small treats will work. He will appreciate it. Limit his stimulation for a couple of days. You will catch on.
I have read all the comments. Viewers overwhelmingly DO NOT want the dog to be kept on your balcony. Please reconsider and let Lord freely roam in the house. My dog did and so do the dogs I watch on You Tube and the dogs of people I know. There is little likelihood he will 'do his business' in your apartment as you take him for walks.
The balcony is bigger than it looks on video, it's around 8-12x the size of the crate he was stuck in at the shelter. I can't have him destroying the apartment as it's a rental. I take him for walks frequently.

She also said, that you have put this dog on the balcony, outside, where the sound of sirens and bombs can also be heard from time to time! I worked in veterinary medicine for years, although this should not constitute or replace medical advice in-person from a veterinarian for your specific dog. Your dog likely will not choose to jump out the window, but if there's a missile strike or very loud noise, it's not impossible for him to get frightened and look for a place to escape. If the only place is the window, it can happen. He may also fall out the window accidentally if he hangs out on the ledge. Most dogs do have a very basic understanding of height, but it's not as simple as "this is too high for me to survive" and many cats and dogs will jump anyways. A strong mesh screen can help, but large animals can easily pop the mesh out with their body weight. It's also important to note that you do not know how he reacts to separation - when you leave the house, how will he act? Will he look to escape through the window, as it is the only way to the outside? The best solution is to only leave the window open when he is attended to, or otherwise open wide enough that his body cannot fit through the opening. You might actually find eventually that he is good with having the window open and will not jump once you have been with him for a while, but it is never a guarantee that he will not get frightened from an explosion or loud noise - or even excited by a bird or something flying past the window. Also, there are dog collars which are electrified or will pinch them slightly if they pull too hard. Your dog specifically is bred to be very strong, fast, and they can sometimes be aggressive if not trained well. These electrified, pinch or pronged collars are perfectly ok and ethical to use, despite what you may hear online from non-medical laypeople and non-veterinarians, and are the best way to train large dogs. The dog will simply stop pulling if they do not wish to be pinched or lightly zapped, it is not painful, just unpleasant. They do not harm the dog, and have demonstrated extreme efficacy in dozens of studies for canine behavioral training, and I encourage you to do your own research on medical journals on scholar.google.com. It's very important that they learn not to pull very early on, because it can hurt the owner, the leash can get tangled on other people or children and knock them over, or they may run and attack smaller dogs. All it takes is for the dog to trip you one time, hit your head very lightly on something, and you could severely injured or killed. Once you're confident he will not pull with the pinch collar/leash, you can switch to a normal leash, and he will do much better on regular leashes. There's so many resources online for basic training of dogs! Can't wait to see your adventures with your new dog!
Thanks so much for the insights! I ended up getting a slip collar, non-spike, I only needed use it once, and he learned to stop pulling hard. It worked! Also he never jumped out the window, thank god. =)
Slip lead (cesar milan uses ) I pull forward under the dogs chin turn it (makes a figure if 8) and then Bring up over nose This then pushes the nose down if they pull ( no pressure on throat if sharp tug no pulls to neck then). Also if walking well ...i knock it off nose if misbehaves it goes back on !! If they dont like it they soon realise and behave! You may get resistance to it at first, but as cesar says keep going forward and ignire it Changing directions always bring them to heel too! Do not! Use a harness .. do watch cesar! 32kg gsh owner .... Have total control with slip lead no longer on the floor (spent lots if time on the floor until i used slip lead hahah) Infact that blue lead would do it.... use the handle end ...slip in lead put that created loop over dogs head ... Then Under chin extend / pull loop forward twist and pull that second loop over nose. Last point behind ears is where the kead shoukd extemd to you (not the side!! ) good luck. That’s great!!! Lorde is a lucky dog! I know if he pulls you can just stop and hopefully he calms down. Otherwise maybe a dog training session just to get things going. Also a plush bog bed, some toys by the bed and giving him a groom usually helps dogs feel better. I used to give my dog a groom every 2 to 3 months or so and when he got really dirty. Depending on the breed some friends with dogs take their dog to the groomer monthly for shampoo and cut. I m not sure Lorde needs that kind of schedule etc. But, he’s already happy with the routine you guys have!!! ❤ Your heart has opened to Lorde and he will never forget you even when he goes to his forever home! Your story here is heartwarming!
Make sure he can't slip through that collar! It should be tight and sturdy enough.. Secondly, when you tie him up outside, he's capable of chewing that fabric leash IF he wanted to... So you could consider getting him a metal chain leash...? Also... even though Flexis aren't recommended for dogs when you're still training them, I've found them a life savior with dogs you can't let free ~ with the Flexi, they get more space to walk in and get the needed exercise... You can walk with a normal leash when training him to walk well, and then put a Flexi on when you want him to burn some energy. Regarding the hair ~ stress makes it fall out too... And of course some dogs shed more than others. But daily brushing (outside) helps! It's stressful in the beginning, but soon you have a schedule with him and he's settled in. 😸
Brother, I’ve watched for 2 years at this point and have loved everything you do. I realize you may not have a lot of experience with the ownership of dogs but please don’t confine it to a balcony. It should be allowed to roam the apartment.
@@JohnnyFD I am. It’s tough if they have zero experience but it seems he’s had some crate experience with being with the shelter. Honestly, you can always talk with other dog owners near you or people you’re friends with to see how they accommodate new dogs in apartments. You’re really doing an amazing job and it gets easier each day, you can tell he feels safe with you too.
Dogs shed like that when they are stressed. It would be better to keep him with you so you can bond. Perhaps a crate in your living room would be a good idea. When you are with him keep it open so he can go in it when he wants. It will be his safe place. Poor fella is confused and it takes time for him to trust you. He needs routine to reassure him. Sorry but the balcony is a bad idea. You are a kind man and he will read you. Lots of patience and love and it will be a wonderful experience. Trouble is you get attached. Wishing you well. Wendy
@@JohnnyFD It stops all the pulling pressure being on their neck, it's across their chest instead.. I've never used one of the nose band leads that people mention here.. but your dog is possibly just I totally a puller because of being in a shelter. You'll know after a few weeks if he settles down walking. I do agree with those who say that if you can have him in the apartment with you.. not on the furniture, or not even all the time.. it greatly helps to socialise them and develop a sense of belonging in a home and how to behave there. And to interact with him in the apartment with some toys .. if he'll play with them. My rescue won't play with toys because she was too many years on a chain in an isolated place and 9 years old when I got her.. a bone is her only interest in that line because she wasn't well fed for years either. When you're out in walks with Lordy he's doing his own thing.. which is different to being inside ..say.. learning to sit to get a treat.. and interacting personally with you. I notice when he's out in the balcony he reverts to being 'alone', lying quiet and introverted - a learned habit from the shelter where when nit in walks he was probably just in his cage. My dog did the same the first weeks here. From having lived 7 years on a 10 foot chain except when taken to occasionally round up sheep.. unless I was taking her a walk she made no use of the space she now had, open back door and all .. and even only went 10 feet from her bed in the kitchen to poo and piddle. A learned response from those 7 years on a 10ft chain. It took me months for her to understand that she could interact with people.. look at me and wag her tail.. or to move with me into different rooms and feel good about doing that.. she had no idea how to relate to me at the start except as some distant boss or order giver. She'd never had a relationship with a person. But Lordy is different.. if he is to be adopted he needs to become calm indoors and learn what he can and cannot do in an apartment... But you know him best and I'm sure you've lots of dog owner friends to advise you. If you think of him while you have him as your partner or live in friend as opposed to just a dog you walk and is on the balcony in between.. he'll start relating to you personally more as opposed to just his surroundings as you are relating personally more to him.. It took Daisy my dog over a year to come and ask to be petted.. she didn't think she was entitled to... Now she has lost that reticence and realised she has full right to make such demands. ☺️ She's 15 now and starting to slow down but she's had a good life the past 6 years thank goodness and it's been a joy to be able to share that with her. But this video is probably of a while ago so the two of you have probably got to know each other better. I hope it's been going well for you both.

Congratulations @Johnnyfd you're gonna do fine, hopefully some of our advice helps, not only will it be good for you both living together, but doing all these things will help him be a more rounded pet, which will allow him more adoption opportunities. I think discipline schooling for maybe at least a month since you are new owner amd he is foster dog w little known background. A pet whisperer will enable you both to establish your roles-that you are leader of pack, etc.and you will feel more secure and confident in your ability which in turn will help him feel calmer, safer and easier to train
Thank you for fostering this nice boy. He is an attractive, sweet dog. I rescued/fostered Siberians for 20 yrs (200 dogs). He's terrified right now. He doesn't know what happened to his life. It will take him a while to figure things out. I would not leave him on the balcony unattended. Something might scare him enough for him to jump out the window to escape. Routine walks, feeding times, etc, will give him confidence. Dogs thrive on routine. Happy Dog Walking!!! You're awesome!
He will try to jump out the window! construct slats if you need the windows open. get a small steak, and stare into his eyes for around a minute as you give the steak.
Dear gawd no. Do not EVER force eye contact with an unknown dog. And this dog is unknown. That's the fastest way to have a dog bite your face off. Please ignore that advice.

It’s not that they are stupid, it’s because they don’t know how to control their fear mode. You do actually need to consider the safety of that window. My cat almost jumped off a three storey balcony. My dog sometimes can’t make the jump onto the couch… I’ve had fur babies a long time and a balcony. It would be wise to take this advice seriously.
I'm glad you finally got a dog. I hope you keep it! It is time for you to have some responsibility. The dog is well-behaved and why not let him have full access to your apartment. This will help get you ready for fatherhood, which is way more stressful and takes a lot of patience but very rewarding. You are a very good person Johnny!

Ukraine isn’t the Third World. I don’t know why you would think the children need financial support. The families over there are the same as anywhere else in the developed world. Some rich, some poor but virtually all capable of looking after themselves.
The animals, especially dogs on the street can be treated very cruelly and need help to be taken off the streets and given places of safety. None of the animal shelters are opulent and very few are adequately funded. Most like Lords just get by.

Please, please allow the dog to sit with you inside the apartment. Dogs are extremely clean & will incredibly love being with human connection sitting on the couch or floor beside you.
I think the noise from the traffic below the balcony will scare the dog witless especially considering its previous environment.
The amount of love & loyalty dogs give to their owners is truly humbling.
I would definitely advise to purchase a harness rather than a collar for Lords benefit & comfort.
Dogs are incredible family members.
Mistakes will happen, its natural, but usually very small & easily cleaned up.

Some dogs I've used a harness. Others a Martingale collar. Some a head harness, especially aggressive pullers, and they've never needed it for long.
Our final step in the potty training process is to have the dog sleep in the bed with us. Once they reach that step they understand to not have an accident, and dogs don't normally want to soil the area they rest in. The exceptions I've observed are anxiety or results of human abuse keeping them locked in a kennel past when they can hold eliminating.
Dogs don't have memories like humans. They remember a hurting hand or foot /the movement that that human did to hurt them rather.
They can be reset just like that with a new owner. Seen it over and over. Clear message about boundaries etc will set things straight = happy doggo
Also, A big No-no to leaving them in a yard or balcony. Couch or beds are for humans, special treat for dogs.
It is wonderful that you are walking the dogs. They deserved some attention and love.
Keeping him isolated on the balcony will cause him separation anxiety and make him more likely to show destructive behaviour, not to mention how cold it will be in the winter and hot in the summer with all those windows conducting heat. Placing his bed near yours will help him feel secure until he settles in. You need to build trust with him and show him he's part of your family. Sit on the floor at eye level with him and ignore him until he's ready to come to you. When he does, tell him how good he is and reward him with a small treat like Pedigree Mini Bites. They're greatfor training with. You'll need a throw for your settee incase he does jump up on it while your away. Also, some good quality hard rubber chew toys like the Kong Extreme Goodie Bone that you can place a treat inside to keep him occupied for longer. Finally bud, your days of a hair free home, car and clothing are well and truly over. I highly recommend the Dyson Animal Ball and a lint roller. 😅

Even in peaceful countries like England and Australia there are so many dogs in shelters. Just abandoned or surrendered. Many from irresponsible back yard breeders. So cruel and inhumane.
As a foster dog guy my best advice is to always put yourselves in their shoes. So much stimulation and confusion going from a home to a shelter to a strangers car to a new world. It’s scary! Get on her level. Try and see through their eyes. Go slow and open your world to them at their speed. Trust me, they bond to you and trust you quickly when they see that you’re “one of their own” and is the leader. Go slow and be patient.
Let her in the house. She will feel so much more comfortable. Get a harness. A dog like that will choke himself and he looks like he’s one of those that will try and dip out of her collar to get free.
Lastly, keep kibble or treats on you in the beginning. If he takes the stairs? Treat. Goes potty? Treat. Sit, stay, shake? Treat.
Absolutely! Positive reinforcement is key. Negative reinforcement should only be used in the most extreme circumstances (such as emergency recall). I use regular kibble as treats, that way I can keep an eye on how many calories the dog is getting - too many treats will ake them fat AND sick.

Johnny good to see you got a friend! A few things from someone who has 9 dogs…8 Labs and a rough Collie…get a kennel or crate for Lord. Keep it open when you’re home as a safe place…never use putting him in as punishment. If you put him in an area when you go out think of anything in that room as expendable. No matter how good Lord is, you step out for coffee and come back to a chewed up pillow all across his space..that’s what the crate is for…either open cage type or airline transport type doesn’t matter. I feed dry food topped with cooked chicken gizzards or chicken livers and use that broth to soak…chicken cooked in pressure cooker. I saw Royal Canin at that store it’s pretty good but always try small bag first see what Lord likes. Remember when you change food you may have a day or two with loose poops…add a little cooked rice to his food to help with that for a few days. Use the 3-3-3 rule…3 days to decompress from the move…3 weeks to feel comfortable in the new home …and 3 months to really bond with you and accept you as his buddy and friend. Lots of tips online but you should keep him with you when you’re home, I know looks like Lord has an undercoat and sheds…maybe some Husky or German Shepherd in his genes…but the one thing to remember is a dog is a pack animal and once he bonds with you he’ll always want to be with you even stronger, even more than food or water.
You should get a harness for lord. It’s really bad on the dogs neck / vocal cords when they pull so hard and the collar chokes them. It’s easier to control with a harness and then he can’t chew through.
Please PLEASE get him a harness!! He needs water after walking, and please walk him every day! He is use to being with other dogs and people, please let him be with you and not out on the balcony for a few days.
And a shorter leash also!

It is good that he isn't staying in the shelter so he will be less inclined to start barking like the others. I'm glad you will both have each other. You will need to buy a leash that is reinforced so he can't chew through. If he is nervous, try to sit with him and pat him. When it gets dark he will probably feel calmer. Try to stay with him. It is good that he is licking your arm while you are patting him. He is bonding with you.

You are doing a good deed Johnny, but be aware a shelter dog is a bigger responsibility that asks for more skill and patience from the owner than getting a puppy from a breeder...it will be hard, but don't give up...find his interests (balls or treats) and you can easily get him to do what you want (even stop pulling on the leash) by rewarding him for good behavior...Also it will take a week, maybe two for him to totally relax, set your walks either a couple of hours before feeding time or couple of hours after (to avoid bloat which could lead to the stomach tangling itself and then death) and always tell him his a good boy! That's a must, good luck 👍

It is wonderful you adopted him. I have rescued many dogs in my life including a Cuban street dog. Currently I have a pitbull female rescued from a puppy farm breeder. Once Lordy is bathed and groomed bring him inside so he knows he is part ls your pack and can bond with you. Isolating him there is certainly better than a cage but working with him and letting him know he belongs is so important to a rescue. My pitbull spent 5 years in a cage . Although she has her dog bed in the kitchen she much prefers watching tv on the couch beside me . I dont suggest everyone wants dogs on their furniture but he does need to feel part of the family and not segregated from you while inside. Good luck.
And I just wanted to add , he is overly excited in the morning because he has been confined all night and needs to pee. Sitting and waiting until he calls down is not productive and cruel in a way. He needs to get outside asap and do his business .
First thing in the morning he will need to potty first thing. Youre doing a good job and listen to the people here...youre getting good advice.

I had my dog for several months and she was biting dogs on walks, so I took her for training and then I said I love you to her and it made such a great difference. They really do understand our emotions!
Dogs can be cute and etc... I remember taking on a dog for 14 days. He was a retired police dog, German Shepard. Massive dominance behaviour on his part. I grew up with similar dogs, but he was hard to handle. It went well after the first day and half. You just have to feel each other out. And establish boundaries and rules, while giving affection etc.
I think I deleted my comment some how. Congrats !! You’re going to love him so much. It will all come together. I did the same back in 2021. Eventually you figure it out. Get him a harness so you don’t have to choke him with the collar. Keep them on same food. Get him good brand of food. It’s ok to let him roam around the apartment. Just have to have him on a pee poop schedule. Like 8 am then lunch then dinner then before bed type thing. Research what foods to NOT give him. He will be fine inside your apartment he may even sleep with you. Also have lots of dog poop bags.
You need a full harness for him and possibly a pulling buddy collar to help him stop pulling-leash hooks under and to front so when he pulls, it pulls his head down and to side wo the pinching collars. Put a blanket over his crate,, it will make him feel more secure and enclosed in his safe space. Take him to vet and obedience school so you learn how to deal w each other. Our last adopted doggo didn't eat for days. Access to balcony off limits till you are better acquainted. You need to let him get used to house, familiar w smells, rooms etc.

The Furminator is a little pricey, but worth it. I've used them for years and it helps pull out more loose hair than a normal brush.
I'd also recommend getting him a harness for going on walks. It's really easy to slip out of a collar with the leash attached, especially with there being cars around and with him being a little timid and unaware of his new environment. I became a harness convert years ago when my dog slipped out of her collar in a busy shopping center parking lot and ran back to my car. She had never been to the pet store before, and probably panicked thinking it was the vet.

If he keeps pulling on the leash (which is dangerous for his throat btw) do this:
when he starts pulling, do NOT pull him back as with this you reinforce his behaviour !!
Instead, when he starts pulling you immediatelly just turn round, you give a short commant like 'come on', and you walk in exactly the opposite direction with him; the moment he starts pulling again, you again turn round with the short command, and walk in the opposite direction.
Even though this walking up and down will look crazy - you do this until he stops pulling and may looks at you like "what the heck is this human doing?"
And with this, you start winning: NOW you got his attention!!
The doggy will learn to figure out that he may well get where he wants to go BUT only if he does not pull on the leash!
Trust me, this works and it stimulates the dog's brain to figure out what you expect from him. He looks intelligent and with such methods, you make yourself interesting for the doggo.

Hi Jonny, please don’t leave him on the balcony or close the door when he is there. If you do he will try to force us way out! Dogs don’t like being confined or left alone. He will get used to the balcony only if he has access to the house. Make sure you do not leave him alone on the house for a few weeks and never leave him on his own for longer than 4 hours after that. If you do your apartment will be chewed and scratched up! I’m talking ripped furniture and the doors scratched up! I hope you know what’s coming. While your with him, he’ll be right as rain!

Have you ever heard of a wolf den? Dog's prefer small places. You're applying your human preferences to the dog to want a big space, for them it's more stressful to have to guard it.
@@JohnnyFD Maybe I’m not a professor but I’m sure a wolf den is not a metal cage with a closed door that you are forced to stay on against your will. If I were anthropomorphising it would be like comparing a bedroom to a prison. I’m not being pedantic but I have a dog who is 14 years old and if I had no choice but to leave him on a cage on his own I would not like it. It’s just my opinion and not something I expect everyone to agree with but I actually know that my dog would much prefer to roam freely around the house and that’s good enough for me!

He has to have some time to get used to all the changes, to get used to you. It will take some time for him to settle in nd his real personality to shine. Let him come inside the home with you. You can throw sheets over the furniture, the relationship will grow much closer and the quiet will calm him faster. Thank you for adopting him. Many people adopt and regret right away not understanding it takes some time for the dog to settle in. He looks like a sweet little guy. Enjoy being a dog dad!

Dude, take it from someone who has been owning dogs all his life..... you really should not keep your dog on the balcony!!!!! Its clear that he/she is a very gentel animal and needs to be around you, not alone in the balckony. Also your dog is big and the would like to move around the rooms, feel that he/she is apart of your family. He/she will not ever feel at home, if you dont let him/her sniff around the aparment and move freely. If thats how your going to keep the dog, then do him/her a favour and take him/her back to the shelter.. so someone who really knows how to take care of a dog, can have a chance and also the dog can have better life then sitting alone on the balckony and only waiting when you come and take him to walks!
Johnny, I know how difficult to be an owner of one dog, but I have learned from experience that it would make a dog's life so much better in quality if you get two dogs in your home. We all live busy lives at certain times, and for a dog to have another dog to keep it company will just increases both of their lives exponentially. You will benefit by not feeling guilty leaving your dog alone in a small apartment when you are out doing your things like going to a party, meeting friends at restaurants that do not allow dogs, and meeting people at their office where no dogs are allow. I like a male dog with a female dog. Male and female are usually best match for getting along with each other. A female dog will calm down the male dog a lot. They even makes collars that helps you walk both dogs at once.

While I agree two dogs are better than one, he’s only fostering. Unless he decides to keep him permanently, a second dog will make it harder to adopt them out. They usually get bonded and bonded pairs are hard to find families for.
Johnny, get a harness instead of that collar to walk the dog, way more comfortable for him since he won't be choking all the time and will make it easier for him to follow you on a leash.

He drags because he's full of energy... You can never outwalk a dog on leash. But he needs to get rid of that ENERGY somehow. See if you could find a tennis or basketball court etc, that you could let him free in? See if he likes to play with a tennis ball etc there... If you get him to run once a day, he'll be much better with his energy - and he'll be easier to walk on leash!!!! For walks (not training), as I suggested below, a Flexi is helpful with dogs you can't otherwise let free. :-)
My dog had never been in a house only outdoor kennel for 2 years but no accidents inside house. They learn they want their kennel clean and go outside for bathroom
There are toilets you can buy for dogs on balconies. They are square patches of grass with drainage underneath. You can train him with treats to use it. Then he can be let in and out when he needs it. You won’t need to keep him on the balcony once fully trained. I’ve trained mine to use fake grass in a gated dog run that I built using gates. Buy toys and exercise him so he doesn’t destroy the apartment. A dog is only as good as their owner ❤ I hope you bring him in during sirens ❤ Congrats on becoming a fluffy parent!

Johnny, your dog is about the same size as my Australian Shepard! He eats 1 1/2 Cups of food twice a day (with green beans and pumpkin). I think your going to need a bigger bag of food! A harness would help better control him. You can use a bottle from the hair section with water to spray him when you misbehave when you are training him. UA-cam probably has good training videos. He definitely needs toys to chew on. A bored dog gets into trouble. Try to keep him in the balcony only when you are gone or at bedtime. The better you train him the easier it will be to find him a home. I used to foster dogs. I don't anymore just because we have two small dogs and lots of chickens now. Ray and Rachel from Texas

No, don't put him in a crate, Johnny. That is like imprisoning him. He seems happy on his blanket on the terrace of your apartment. You could buy him a dog bed even though he might not be with you permanently. The shelter would be able to use it if he were adopted. If you bond with him, he could end up as your dog.

I trained my dog to use a crate. He now only uses it at the vets and groomers. He uses the bed and couch at home. Dogs don’t need crates once they are housed trained. The idea of a ‘den’ is a myth created by those who need to justify a crate.

For medium dog, it should be arround 1.2% x 25kg dogweight = 0.3 kg (300 gramm ) a day, iff the dog gets skinny or to fat adjust the amount. you bought that cheaper dogfood it can be taken more of it. I see that petshop has the Britt dogfood brand thats more quality food for doggo

I urge you to start cooking food for Lord. That dry food is made of terrible ingredients. It will lesson your vet bills. Lots of resources online. Also, you need to allow him to come inside the actual apartment. The balcony situation is absurd.
100% the open window on the balcony is crazy and at the very least you can get catches for the double glazed window to still keep the fresh air but keep it closed enough so the pet doesn't get out. But as always Johnny will know better. 🙄
No solid commercial kibble, and based on his size 1 - 2 Tablespoons of kefir per day, given the dog doesn't have a dairy issue, which in that case you would use water kefir.
Never feed the dog peanut butter. It's terrible for them and creates candida yeast.
Throw bits of veggies in for treats when you're food prepping. I had my dogs including fosters trained to sit at the edge of the kitchen doorway and I would throw chunks if green pepper, carrots, and fruit to them. One dog in particular loved carrots the most.

@@JohnnyFDI agree. I left some shared insights based on my 15 years of having canine family members as an adult and experience with fosters infusing one that was deaf.
First he needs a harness, the pulling on the neck isn't good. All dogs need is love, food and safety as well as good brushes and tickles with lots of walks. You will do amazing. When he's settled and trusting you then you will see the difference. Also get safety catches on the window as he will jump out if he gets scared. It's like child locks. I have them on mine so they only open a little and my cat can't escape. I got them from amazon. Please don't keep him locked on the balcony. He has gone from one cage to the next doing that. You need to allow him from roam of your home.
Give him lot of water and pls note he shoulf not be on a sun lot, so keeping him on a balcony is not a good idea. And walk him 3 times a day..

I was also surprised you keep him in balcony, but assuming its just for training purposes that its his place really. As in Uk people also don't have space to keep dogs so people just let them roam the house so they have more space, which obviously requires more grooming and cleaning house of fur, but well dog is like a baby that needs your attention. Im just curious to see how this will play out when you will get bored and want to travel, where will dog go, with you or you will just dump it on someone.

Having a dog in a quite closed and small space, specially in a flat like residence can be challenging for you and the dog.
P.S : You've done a great job by calming down and not letting the dog get too excited, and taking a walk regularly with lord.

My advice exactly. I knew he was familiar with Cesar's methods before he said it. He just need to watch several hours more. Especially how to be a pack leader. How to stop walking if dog pulls. Calm energy and then start walking when dog relaxes. Not when dog decides to walk. Quick, exact timing when dog realizes when it has done good. Patience, lots of patience.

I guess what everyone is telling you that you will need a harness with the point of connection between his shoulders. This is because a collar will cause damage to his neck. Also apartment living means that he will need to be out every four hours most of the time. Dogs that are force to hold their pee will develop kidney damage over time. He will need some squeak toys to entertain himself. Teach him some tricks and commands so you have a way to communicate. I feed my dogs raw meat only and vegs that I eat. Smart move to get small amount to see what he likes. We are a dog, horse, and parrot family for decades. Put him into his cage at your home so he will feel safe. He drinks water he will need to be taken out to pee. Did you buy treats to use to develop friendship and training? Just small treats will work. He will appreciate it. Limit his stimulation for a couple of days. You will catch on.

I have read all the comments. Viewers overwhelmingly DO NOT want the dog to be kept on your balcony. Please reconsider and let Lord freely roam in the house. My dog did and so do the dogs I watch on You Tube and the dogs of people I know. There is little likelihood he will 'do his business' in your apartment as you take him for walks.

The balcony is bigger than it looks on video, it's around 8-12x the size of the crate he was stuck in at the shelter. I can't have him destroying the apartment as it's a rental. I take him for walks frequently.

I worked in veterinary medicine for years, although this should not constitute or replace medical advice in-person from a veterinarian for your specific dog.
Your dog likely will not choose to jump out the window, but if there's a missile strike or very loud noise, it's not impossible for him to get frightened and look for a place to escape. If the only place is the window, it can happen. He may also fall out the window accidentally if he hangs out on the ledge. Most dogs do have a very basic understanding of height, but it's not as simple as "this is too high for me to survive" and many cats and dogs will jump anyways. A strong mesh screen can help, but large animals can easily pop the mesh out with their body weight. It's also important to note that you do not know how he reacts to separation - when you leave the house, how will he act? Will he look to escape through the window, as it is the only way to the outside? The best solution is to only leave the window open when he is attended to, or otherwise open wide enough that his body cannot fit through the opening. You might actually find eventually that he is good with having the window open and will not jump once you have been with him for a while, but it is never a guarantee that he will not get frightened from an explosion or loud noise - or even excited by a bird or something flying past the window.
Also, there are dog collars which are electrified or will pinch them slightly if they pull too hard. Your dog specifically is bred to be very strong, fast, and they can sometimes be aggressive if not trained well. These electrified, pinch or pronged collars are perfectly ok and ethical to use, despite what you may hear online from non-medical laypeople and non-veterinarians, and are the best way to train large dogs. The dog will simply stop pulling if they do not wish to be pinched or lightly zapped, it is not painful, just unpleasant. They do not harm the dog, and have demonstrated extreme efficacy in dozens of studies for canine behavioral training, and I encourage you to do your own research on medical journals on scholar.google.com. It's very important that they learn not to pull very early on, because it can hurt the owner, the leash can get tangled on other people or children and knock them over, or they may run and attack smaller dogs. All it takes is for the dog to trip you one time, hit your head very lightly on something, and you could severely injured or killed. Once you're confident he will not pull with the pinch collar/leash, you can switch to a normal leash, and he will do much better on regular leashes. There's so many resources online for basic training of dogs! Can't wait to see your adventures with your new dog!
Thanks so much for the insights! I ended up getting a slip collar, non-spike, I only needed use it once, and he learned to stop pulling hard. It worked! Also he never jumped out the window, thank god. =)

This then pushes the nose down if they pull ( no pressure on throat if sharp tug no pulls to neck then). Also if walking well ...i knock it off nose if misbehaves it goes back on !!
If they dont like it they soon realise and behave! You may get resistance to it at first, but as cesar says keep going forward and ignire it

32kg gsh owner .... Have total control with slip lead no longer on the floor (spent lots if time on the floor until i used slip lead hahah)
Infact that blue lead would do it.... use the handle end ...slip in lead put that created loop over dogs head ... Then Under chin extend / pull loop forward twist and pull that second loop over nose. Last point behind ears is where the kead shoukd extemd to you (not the side!! ) good luck.

That’s great!!! Lorde is a lucky dog! I know if he pulls you can just stop and hopefully he calms down. Otherwise maybe a dog training session just to get things going. Also a plush bog bed, some toys by the bed and giving him a groom usually helps dogs feel better. I used to give my dog a groom every 2 to 3 months or so and when he got really dirty. Depending on the breed some friends with dogs take their dog to the groomer monthly for shampoo and cut. I m not sure Lorde needs that kind of schedule etc. But, he’s already happy with the routine you guys have!!! ❤ Your heart has opened to Lorde and he will never forget you even when he goes to his forever home! Your story here is heartwarming!

Make sure he can't slip through that collar! It should be tight and sturdy enough.. Secondly, when you tie him up outside, he's capable of chewing that fabric leash IF he wanted to... So you could consider getting him a metal chain leash...? Also... even though Flexis aren't recommended for dogs when you're still training them, I've found them a life savior with dogs you can't let free ~ with the Flexi, they get more space to walk in and get the needed exercise... You can walk with a normal leash when training him to walk well, and then put a Flexi on when you want him to burn some energy. Regarding the hair ~ stress makes it fall out too... And of course some dogs shed more than others. But daily brushing (outside) helps! It's stressful in the beginning, but soon you have a schedule with him and he's settled in. 😸

Brother, I’ve watched for 2 years at this point and have loved everything you do. I realize you may not have a lot of experience with the ownership of dogs but please don’t confine it to a balcony. It should be allowed to roam the apartment.

@@JohnnyFD I am. It’s tough if they have zero experience but it seems he’s had some crate experience with being with the shelter. Honestly, you can always talk with other dog owners near you or people you’re friends with to see how they accommodate new dogs in apartments. You’re really doing an amazing job and it gets easier each day, you can tell he feels safe with you too.

Dogs shed like that when they are stressed. It would be better to keep him with you so you can bond. Perhaps a crate in your living room would be a good idea. When you are with him keep it open so he can go in it when he wants. It will be his safe place. Poor fella is confused and it takes time for him to trust you. He needs routine to reassure him. What's the difference between the balcony a crate?
A harness to attach the lead to would instead of to the collar would help.. but I see many others have suggested that too..

I've never used one of the nose band leads that people mention here.. but your dog is possibly just I totally a puller because of being in a shelter. You'll know after a few weeks if he settles down walking.
I do agree with those who say that if you can have him in the apartment with you.. not on the furniture, or not even all the time.. it greatly helps to socialise them and develop a sense of belonging in a home and how to behave there. And to interact with him in the apartment with some toys .. if he'll play with them. My rescue won't play with toys because she was too many years on a chain in an isolated place and 9 years old when I got her.. a bone is her only interest in that line because she wasn't well fed for years either.
When you're out in walks with Lordy he's doing his own thing.. which is different to being inside ..say.. learning to sit to get a treat.. and interacting personally with you.
I notice when he's out in the balcony he reverts to being 'alone', lying quiet and introverted - a learned habit from the shelter where when nit in walks he was probably just in his cage.
My dog did the same the first weeks here. From having lived 7 years on a 10 foot chain except when taken to occasionally round up sheep.. unless I was taking her a walk she made no use of the space she now had, open back door and all .. and even only went 10 feet from her bed in the kitchen to poo and piddle. A learned response from those 7 years on a 10ft chain.
It took me months for her to understand that she could interact with people.. look at me and wag her tail.. or to move with me into different rooms and feel good about doing that.. she had no idea how to relate to me at the start except as some distant boss or order giver. She'd never had a relationship with a person.
But Lordy is different.. if he is to be adopted he needs to become calm indoors and learn what he can and cannot do in an apartment... But you know him best and I'm sure you've lots of dog owner friends to advise you.
If you think of him while you have him as your partner or live in friend as opposed to just a dog you walk and is on the balcony in between.. he'll start relating to you personally more as opposed to just his surroundings as you are relating personally more to him..
It took Daisy my dog over a year to come and ask to be petted.. she didn't think she was entitled to... Now she has lost that reticence and realised she has full right to make such demands. ☺️
She's 15 now and starting to slow down but she's had a good life the past 6 years thank goodness and it's been a joy to be able to share that with her.
But this video is probably of a while ago so the two of you have probably got to know each other better.

Congratulations @Johnnyfd you're gonna do fine, hopefully some of our advice helps, not only will it be good for you both living together, but doing all these things will help him be a more rounded pet, which will allow him more adoption opportunities. I think discipline schooling for maybe at least a month since you are new owner amd he is foster dog w little known background. A pet whisperer will enable you both to establish your roles-that you are leader of pack, etc.and you will feel more secure and confident in your ability which in turn will help him feel calmer, safer and easier to train
Thank you for fostering this nice boy. He is an attractive, sweet dog. I rescued/fostered Siberians for 20 yrs (200 dogs). He's terrified right now. He doesn't know what happened to his life. It will take him a while to figure things out. I would not leave him on the balcony unattended. Something might scare him enough for him to jump out the window to escape. He will try to jump out the window! construct slats if you need the windows open. get a small steak, and stare into his eyes for around a minute as you give the steak.

It’s not that they are stupid, it’s because they don’t know how to control their fear mode. You do actually need to consider the safety of that window. My cat almost jumped off a three storey balcony. My dog sometimes can’t make the jump onto the couch… I’ve had fur babies a long time and a balcony. It would be wise to take this advice seriously.
