I don’t think I’m supposed to use the word complaining in the Philippines, but Rob I believe you got all your dissatisfactions out in one video 😂. Honestly speaking I believe all of that patients and humility is the reason change happens so slowly in there culture, no squeak no grease.

A final tip. Most travelers will end up in a 35m2 condo which is small but comfortable. Book onr on the highest floor possible as you will avoid the traffic noise. If you can, get one with a balcony. It makes a difference.

R&C, Good list - you guys always do a good job drilling down into the subject matter. I would add 2 additional points: 1. If witnessing people living in oppressive poverty deeply disturbs you 2. If you are not comfortable with large numbers of malnourished and stray animals (mostly dogs) -- then you might want to reconsider. For me, I haven't heard anything to dissuade me from my plans yet. I really enjoy just watching you and Chrissy banter topics about.... on camera it looks like you have both settled into a wonderful rhythm together, I hope that is the case throughout your life together. Salamat po. Peace and Love, B Goat

It is another excellent video. Thanks for all of the hard work. I would add that you shouldn't come if you are sensitive to pollution, or at least not settle in the larger cities where vehicles of all kinds constantly cause pollution. There can also be issues with water and food, so you have to be careful.

I've been here for many years and you have outlined the most obvious reasons fairly. As Rod said the compelling reasons for staying in SEA is cheaper cost of living. When choosing between the countries the big attractions of Phil's is English and Pinays. Rod seems to have been quite a bit luckier than most with Chrissy. Not so much in terms of looks. Many guys find women as good looking as her, but general vibrancy and attitude is unusual so congrats. I can certainly see why she is genuinely attracted to Rod. Seems like a decent guy and to be frank is quite alot more decent seeming than the average foreigner here.

I just have to comment on this-there's a lot of truth here, but I can easily find more than 30 reasons not to retire in the Philippines, even though I can find 10 reasons why it might be a good idea to retire in a country where time stands still. Potholes in the roads and sidewalks, along with reckless driving, stress me out. And then there's everything that's missing when you try to buy something and it ends with 'I hope you understand sir.' If you want to shorten your life and enjoy that everything is much more fun in the Philippines, I highly recommend everyone to travel as soon as possible. The problem is that too many people drink and drink until they ruin their lives bit by bit. The standard of living is low in the Philippines, and politicians are corrupt, which is why the Philippines won’t change in the next 50-100 years. For those who travel to the Philippines, they should at least have a buffer account for health issues with at least 2 million pesos. The people are friendly, but there are too many guns, and they are used; several foreigners are killed for various reasons every single year. You can’t have a nice house or an expensive car, as you’re more at risk for robbery and violence than those who live hand-to-mouth. Yes, the food is terrible in many places, and lots of products are expired or about to expire. A young foreigner asked on FB a few months ago what he could do in the Philippines, but he never got to plan it as he was shot by a rapper in Cebu over a trivial matter. My long experience in the Philippines doesn’t make me an expert, but I’m just back home after a month in the Philippines, and yes, time has stood still except for condos, hotels, and various new shopping malls. I doubt I’ll repeat it; my wife can travel alone if she wants-she wasn’t that impressed either.

"retiring" in one place always has its good and bad. i have a home base in Michigan USA. i will travel to the Philippines in November to meet up with friends and travel around. i could be there for weeks or months. i dont plan alot. i grab and go. i stay until its time to leave and go somewhere else. my strategy always is "when in Rome, do as the Romans do." im ok with noise, roosters, karaoke, hot weather. but if i get burned out, i roll on. i always find ways to live cheap and have fun. i see and experience the things i want to see and i usually enjoy the surprises too. no expectations, no judgement, no illusions of grandeur. i always enjoy the new experiences. i dont drink alcohol. i always try to eat healthy. im a minimalist by nature so i never have money problems. yes, some people call me "cheap." but it works for me. i will enjoy the Philippines because i choose to enjoy every place i go and everything i do. its a state of mind😊

Food is a challenge if you eat healthily. There is more vegan/organic food than their used to be, but it's twice the price it is at home. The Philippines has a love affair with sugar and MSG. I always ask for no sugar when I get a fruit based drink. Send yourself a balikbayan box from home with all the dried/tinned goods you can't live without. Health plusses are the great dentists for less than a third if what it costs in the west. I'm back in Cebu for six months in January. Can't wait!

You know your condition; we don't. Healthcare is an issue, but if you are in Makati, BGC, Cebu, Davao, or Angeles City, it can be pretty good and quite close. The mobility issue, though, is significant if you need to use a wheelchair. I don't have any troublesome in-laws (quite lucky that way), but your wife should be able to run interference for you, and frankly, there are advantages to not living too close to all of the in-laws.

Having traveled throughout SE Asia, the Philippines is a terrible place to live unless you have money. I guess some desperados live on 2000k p/m. The reasons to go there, are the women, the great people and you can get by with English. That's why I will return early next year. Thanks for acknowledging my medical experience.

You are welcome. If I was living on a pension, with no savings, and no other form of income, I would consider SE Asia as a place to retire.
Filipinos live on a lot less, and you would have a better lifestyle than in your home country.I guess it's all a matter of degrees.
There are positives and negatives. Please consider them prior to making a life-changing decision.
I, personally wouldn't consider it on less than $3500p/m (USD). But, there's guys who are living a good life on a lot less.
I'm in my mid 60's and fit, able to navigate the streets pretty well, but I also have to accept reality. I am no longer a young athlete. Even in larger cities, do not expect the medical services you are accustomed to.
I'm not saying 'don't do it', but consider carefully. Visit first, and see if the trade-offs are worth it.
As I have said before, their are better places to retire in SE Asia, economically, housing, modernity, bureaucracy, infrastructure as a whole.
The people and ease of communication keep me going back. Filipinos are lovely people and it is safe unless you go south of Davao.
I love my Filipino friends and the wonderful family life they have.

Foreigners not getting jobs? Wrong - a) you have expats being sent to the PH, but you have also a lot of well earning foreigners with local jobs. They just work significantly harder and are better educated than most.
    b) Not being able to make it on your own? Check David's salon, Philux, Jewelmer, or a guy in forwarding business having 28 companies with more than 2000 employees by now.
But admittedly these are the exceptions. It needs a ton of dedication and not all day drinking and Burgos at night time.
So approximately 80% or more fail, the rest can sustain a decent lifestyle and a few make it big time

I think people are overlooking what actually happens when people get old. Significant physical and mental decline is very common. If that happens in the U.S. you are probably ok and can even still be a President or a Senator. Not so in the Philippines. I see older youtubers in places with no taxi service and no car or a wife who doesn't drive. When they can no longer walk much or sit on a motorcycle they will be essentially trapped in their house. Worst case they are too far gone to even access and manage their finances which are still in the U.S.
