I have one propped by my front door in my apartment as a home defense weapon. It's a folding one with a pick, it's heavier than this one. I think I bought the wrong one to use as a weapon, mine is more unwieldy because of the weight. It still makes a badass weapon though , I can swing it one handed and pretty sure it would annihilate an intruder with one shot.

It is very fun, I've only thrown axes and knives though, , this looks crazy, especially the straight throw! That was insane

I have one. I love it. I cut myself spinning it and trying to catch it once. LOL. It's ok. You never own an edged weapon until you cut yourself with it. My only problem (besides cutting my hand...lol) is that my edge keeps getting rusty. How do you keep it free of rust? I have been using sandpaper. Will oil damage it?

Feel free to use oil, it wont damage it in any way you would care about. Just apply it in thin layer, and after use clean it, wash it and dry it and reapply thin film of oil.

I don't understand why this shovel is called the spetsnaz shovel. This is MPL-50, Malaya Pehoynaya Lopata (a Small Infantry Shovel). 50cm. It is used by all russian infantrymen, not just special forces. This is a cheap, thoughtful stamping for a million-strong army. There is nothing elite in it.

It's a spade, fyi. But more commonly known as entrenching tool in the military. Shovel is for scooping and spade is straight up digging, spades would have shorter handles and a flat blade, which is why it is better to throw a spade instead of a shovel.

Den Linnemannske Spade (M.1870) - historical name of this tool. (Mads Johan Buch Linnemann, 1830-1889). Used in Imperial Russian Army since early 1900s I think. All other military shovels (german, us, british, french ... ) - just modifications of this thing.
Soviet (Russian) special forces just love to throw some things into enemy ))

also in italian army shovel is considered a white weapon, as bayonet, used for fight, genarally teached by the instructor of knife/bayonet fighting. the italian version is reversibile as a sap or totally (more confortable to transport) "pala tattica" tactical shovel
