I have done this myself. I used to wake up at 3.30 am and I wouldn't be home until 10pm. I done this for several years. Now i can't work anymore because of the health issue's I've developed over this crazy routine.
I commuted from Eastern Long Island to Manhattan every weekday for almost ten years. It stunted by growth, but I made a lot of friends and wouldn't trade the experiences and the memories for anything. I cherished the time between work and home; it was a beautiful hiatus.
This is ok since you’re young. I thought I could do it long term but now in my 40’s and my body is breaking down slowly. It’s a shame many jobs are only in NY. It took me years to find a job in NJ and I got my life back. Now I can wake up later and get home by 5:30pm.
i did the 2 hour commute from Flushing to downtown manhattan every day each way on a long bus ride and 2 trains. it took a huge toll on my health which i have not recovered from in over a decade. i finally was able to move after years of searching and now am only 1 hour away each way and i can barely do that because of my failing health. the work from home definitely helped, but i'm looking forward to going on disability and moving out of cement city and never working again. this is such a horrible place to live if you are not rich. it just shocks me to see so many people raising their kids in this type of environment.
You were a champion. I used to go into NYC via Megabus, and that trip was 3.5 hours. It drained me so much. I can't imagine doing that and having to function for a job 😵💫
This is gonna be me in a few months. The commute from The Bronx to Staten Island for college is gonna kill me but I’m gonna make sure to be productive during the 2.5-3.5 each way commute. Probably gonna study on the way and sleep on the way back home.
I’m going into my senior year and I’m looking at colleges in NY. I live in the poconos and when I was a kid, my dad used to take the Martz bus to work in the Bronx like every day. Trying to prepare myself
I just moved from NY to CT, and my commute is the same. Before it use to be 45 mins to an hour. I walk 20 minutes from Grand Central to the West side 3th St and 8th Ave.
Holy smoke . That is stress. How do you get from Lyndhurst back to Raritan station ? Google says it takes 2hr 20 min again. ! Wouldn't ut be easier to go in the morning straight to Lyndhurst (46 miles from Raritan is 50min) take the bus to PABus Terminal and walk to you city job at 57th street ( 30min +20min ) . That would in total be under 2 hours for the morning Then 20+ 30 min to Lyndhurst and in the end of the day some 60 min driving to home ! That would be 2 + 1 + 1 hour of commute ! Still a LOT , but 2 hour less than now and much less stress transferring transit !
I commuted from Princeton to Wall Street for nearly two years. Worse years of my life. I don’t recommend it to parents with younger kids. You’ll be that parent who never attends school events.
thats great! I was checking options to travel for work from Trenton NJ to world trade center. Looks like 1.5 hour commute with the express train and another 15 minutes in the New York city transit to downtown Brooklyn where I work.
Yeah not too bad with express trains during rush hour. If you’re going to world trade you could take NJ Transit from Trenton and get off at Newark Penn to transfer to the Path train which will take you right to the Word Trade Center. I did that connection for a while and it wasn’t too bad
I'm considering a job in Portland Oregon and my wife and I and kids live in Weiser Idaho. I can make 30 bucks an hour compared to 20 where we live and 20 is lucky to find. Most is 15-18. It's over 5 hours to Portland but then I'd stay an hour away from Portland in the mother inlaw house. We bought a house in Weiser Idaho because of the housing on Oregon is expensive. As long as the family has a place to live i will go work anywhere I can make a good amount of money
joshua weirdly enough there weren’t direct buses that would take me there that ran frequently enough. The only ones that I could take only ran there like 3 times a day around 6am so it would never work out with my schedule:/
I love big cities but no way, I would live there. I live outside suburban Kansas City Missouri and would commute to nearby suburban Overland Park, Kansas. That was a 30 minute commute with no traffic. Now my company works virtually since the pandemic. I'm a support specialist so working with 3 computer monitors in a 3rd bedroom works perfectly. Sales people from all over the United States call me for technical assistance. Bless your heart. I couldn't do it.
Ambition is a powerful thing... I used to have a 90 min commute each way before I moved to the city I worked in which I thought was long. Always planned to move to the city though. I doubt I could have kept doing the job without that in my sights. 3 hours each way sounds all consuming.
Thanks for the perspective Brianna ! What does your sleep schedule look like if you don't mind me asking ? I might be doing the same in a couple of months
When I was doing this commute I would normally wake up around 5am and would go to bed around 10 or 11 pm each night. I tried to get as much sleep as I could.
And this is why I'd rather deal with the high rent and live in the same city as my job instead of living so far away for cheaper rent. Though I wouldn't mind the train commute as I can just sleep on the way😜
@@stevenroshni1228 😖 I don't even wanna think about it. I'll probably stick to 95 as long as possible. When I can't I'll take the parkways to route 15 to I 91N
Yeah any town in North Jersey would be considered a commuter town or any town with an NJ transit/PATH train stop. Obviously the closer to the city the more expensive it will be to live there but the train/bus tickets will be cheaper so honestly I would just weigh the options of how short of a commute you want vs how much you want to pay for transportation
Wow you booked a gig for Nickelodeon? Wow that’s awesome! I’d love to learn how you were able to get into connection for that job (I’m also an actor along with my sister), so I’m always eager to explore opportunities. Either way, I’ll subscribe to your channel. Keep up the good work!
As someone who is from NJ this is THE DUMBEST thing I’ve seen in a long time!!! All of this crap is unnecessary!! You can literally take a train to East Rutherford & get to your final stop vlose to the American Dream mall. Lyndhurst, Teterboro, Seacaucas, all those areas are very close to there. It is veryyy easy to drive there or take the train & if you’re not close enough just get a $5 Uber. This is just stupid!!!
I just found this picture on Canva when I was creating the thumbnail so I didn’t take the picture myself. But the nyc subway does have places to stand and wait right outside of where you get on and off the train
What I would advise you to do is instead of coming into NYC (unless it is for your jobs in NYC), you transfer at Newark Penn Station to NJ route 76 , which takes you to Lyndhurst NJ directly.
I played around a lot with the different transit systems to see which was the fastest snd most cost effective. At the time I was juggling multiple jobs ( one in nyc and one that started off in lyndhurst but eventually had me going to east Rutherford) so I still had to get the full train pass to NYC but luckily that made the buses free so I could go to secaucus and transfer to the bus to east Rutherford when I needed to go there at no additional cost which saved me a little time
@@briannagraf2401 but then NJ Transit route 76 goes in the direction of East Rutherford terminating at Hackensack. You would transfer to either route 163, 164 or 703 (NJ Transit) to complete your trip to East Rutherford. If you are not near Met Life Stadium, you should use Google Maps from Hackensack to see which route is best for you.
Besides, there's probably not much difference (maybe between 20 and 40 minutes), and the bus is in motion in comparison to the walk from Penn Station to Port Authority and the wait for the bus. I would save the NYC trips for NYC trips exclusive (take PATH if going to Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn, stay on the train to Penn if going Uptown - The Bronx, Queens, Long Island Upstate NY or Connecticut). Staten Island is perhaps the most difficult of trips as the S89 LIMITED (operated by the MTA) only runs during Peak Hours between Bayonne and Eltingville, and there's no transit between Staten Island (which actually borders the State of New Jersey) and New Jersey.
You leave NJ with the train, to NYC, only to use a bus from NYC to get back to NJ. Dafaq? why? Why not Drive to Lyndhurst in NJ instead of doing round abouts to NYC?
I didn’t want to spend extra money on tolls and gas and stuff when I already had a monthly pass for the train that I needed to get to my other job in the city. And because I had a train pass, I got a bus pass free so it just made more sense for me
Idk how train passes in America work but I’d imagine it’s similar to the ones in Japan where they are only valid between the two stations listed or some stop between them. So she’d have to pay the fare from Secaucus to East Rutherford. Versus riding the bus for free
CoolBro because it was cheaper for me to live at home and commute in from New Jersey while I paid off my loans. Plus I was a working actor, so I would move around for different jobs often and not living in the city saved me money while not having to worry about finding a sublease.

Mad props to you!! I’ve learned once you do something so frequently it feels quicker and quicker
It really looks crazy! Thank you Bri, for providing some perspective on how big distances can be NJ to NY. :0
