Mel hasn't lost his touch. That was absolutely beautifully done!
The wondrous thing about Torme is that his singing never declined and in some ways improved. He's 64 here and is voice as beautiful as it ever was. He didn't sing himself out or collapse into his own mannerisms. I would say he was the best of the genre by far!
I agree.
Oh yes. This is the first time I ever heard him. This was magical! I only wish I could have been around for this !
@Perry Weiner 🍀🌹🌿
To borrow a line he himself spoke into a hand mirror on "Night Court," "Don't EVER change!...
I mean it!" 😜 The man had excellent taste as well ❣️
@@angelwingzzz777 I’d go along with you here…..
Coupled withShearing, pure magic. What a World we live in!
He was a great singer, and I guess a decent person
A voice with some of the most purest tones that a human can make, amazing duo !
Torme and Shearing had an extraordinary ability to communicate their musical journey together. This is a lovely example. Many thanks.,
I'm almost 60 years old and gladly would have given 30 years of my life to have that voice and given so much pleasure to everyone.
This song was my parents favorite song and i must say Mel Torme did it beautifully.
He held that last note around 23 seconds, and he wasn’t a young fella then. It really breaks my heart to listen to all these marvelous, old singers who sang with only one or two instruments accompanying them. There’s just nobody coming up through the ranks that have this kind of talent. They all sound the same when they use auto tune. Of course I was crying as I listened to Mel, he does that to me and I imagine a lot of other people.
I was fortunate to hear and see Mel and George perform at the Fairmont Hotel in
Dallas in 1987. I think that Mel had the best breath control of any singer I ever heard. They don't make them like that anymore. George's piano stylings are also unbeatable.
@@sandralane1329, after seeing your post, I watched this again. My husband passed in 2019 and I think of him whenever I hear this song. But, I wanted to tell you that I watched an interview of Mel’s and he spoke about his voice. He said that he never did drugs and drank very little because he knew his voice was an instrument that needed to be protected. I think it did him proud!
Floods of tears
Moreover, none knows the Great American Songbook. Standards have disappeared.
Me too x
Instead of debating with people about whether today’s popular performers can actually sing anymore, I am just going to play this for them. Mel Torme as a senior citizen, without auto tune, giving a master class in vocals. Always loved his phrasing, right up there with Miss Fitz & Nancy Wilson.
One of the best singers of his generation.❤
I'll be seeing you and When I grow too old to dream mixed magically by George... beautiful...!
Love it! Don’t hear it like that much these days. Aaah the good ole days! ❤
I have never heard anyone sing more perfectly than this guy
Yeah, this is one of the GREATEST songs ever.
Mel Torme was in a class of his own! He was capable of holding a note longer than any other singer of his age, and like a good wine he matured. His performance of this song, with George in support, I find so moving, that I elected when making my will, to have this played at my funeral!
A great choice.
I concur.
First time I’ve heard both of them and this was one of my fave vocal and piano jazz rendition of this song. I agree that perhaps those who heard this in person 34 years ago went home with hearts full of joy for such a magical evening of jazz music! Love the softness and quality of Mel’s voice and the musical arrangement was just incredible! Thank you for sharing this wonderful music to the world👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️
Shearing and Torme together. It couldn't get any richer.
I'm grateful to have lived my life in a time of so much great music.
Two departed legends. RIP gentlemen.
Spent some time with George & his wife in LA in the 80's; and met Mel briefly after an appearance at the old Sundome in Sun City, AZ. Two of my all time favorite entertainers. Recordings keep them alive.
Salute gentlemen! Barry Nulph, Rancho Mirage, CA
At 64 years of age, I think here, Mel Torme's control was simply amazing. Well deserved elevated status.
What supreme artistry from these two. Spellbinding.
The most sentimental and touching rendition of this song ever performed. There's something magical about this performance. Bravo Mr. Torme, Bravo.
Magical. Thanks for leaving us such wonderful music Mel. England, October, 2024.
Thank you Mel❣️ Brings back such Wonderful Memories 💖
How can such a sad song be so good? Fantastic! The absolute quienes of the audience tells you exactly how this felt!
Mel could really sing...transports me to a different time and place..he was a real artist.
I love Shearing's piece in the middle. Just wonderful.
He's playing another song: "When I Grow too Old to Dream" by Sigmund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein II. I agree; it's very beautiful.
Magnificent Mel Torme....the velvet fog. There is no other that could touch him. Those days, Sadly, are gone. What a joy to hear that voice again.
Jazz music as it is supposed to be done,,,,,,,,,W E L L !!!!!!!!!!!! ))))
+emery TERRY we agree on that my friend.
Did you read that in Bulgaria, the Public Broadcasting System was embroiled in a dispute with the organization representing today's singers for failure to pay royalties. The Public System cut off all contemporary singers and limited their programming to this 'old' stuff. The listening audience went up 40%. Thank you!
Pat Hutson
Mel Torme never liked that reference to him (the velvet fog).
That voice! I love Mel's voice so much.
OH could that man sing a song, yes he could....LOVE THIS VERSION of this particular piece of music....needed this tonight, thank you........

Thanks Mel, and Godspeed! Jazz vocal genius! And, since my last visit George has passed - so Godspeed George. The both of you can play for the gods; you're that good!
Both complimented each other, two great talents, they don't make them like them anymore.
The Maestro of Voice, the Maestro of Sound, the Maestro of Pitch. A vocal genius bar none !
Amazing - like an expert ice-skater - the athletics and artistry are in full command
. A grand performance.
Richard Kilroy Always makes me cry . Always !

I love your for this, Mel. May you rest in peace.
SENSATIONAL AWESOME HEAVENLY BEAUTIFUL AMAZING!!!!!
Oddly enough, I started listening to Mel through Harry Anderson of Night Court game. He would often mention his singing prowess and even did a cameo.
These quality voices are disappearing but great that we have recordings! Brings tears every time!
This was Johnny Carson's favorite song along with "Here's That Rainy Day" which Bette Midler sang for Johnny on his last farewell Tonight Show in Burbank Ca 'Was a touching Carson Tonight Show finale.....
'Wow!! what a beautifully held Last note here by Mel Torme.....
That was THE ART...
With a lovely old song that's already been sung beautifully by many wonderful singers over the years, leave it to Mel to make it sound fresh and inspired.
What a wonderful wonderful voice. One I have known fortunately for 60 years. Hugely gifted and a real pro. A great combo with Shearing. I saw him and his wife riding a tandem in the Cotswolds many years ago. I laid down then and still do.
yes that figures..he married jannette scott ..thora hirds daughter..sadly the marriage didant last.
So beautiful. Breathtaking. Two of the most talented and incredible musicians that ever lived!
Absolutely wonderful pianist that George Shearing. Mel Torme was a great jazz composer as well.
I was a rock and roll Elvis kid but music like this entranced me every time. Loved Mel Torme and others like him entranced me as well. We had a piano in the house and Mom played so I was used to music older than my generation. All these many years later , I still love it.
My first time hearing Mel Torme, really what a soft voice.
These two men, amazing talent, amazing beyond what even most professionals can do. They are what we all aspire to musically, but few can match.
What an honor it was to have lived in a time when glorious music like this and a magnificent voice like Mel’s graced the earth.
This is for my puppy, Bella. I love you forever baby girl.
Such feeling now that's like the way I feel a song should be sung.
... and the magic of George Shearing
Magic. Wonderful combination of Torme and Shearing.
Marvellous !!!
Geweldig gezongen Mel vooral met deze prachtig begeleidende pianist!

Before George Shearing died, when asked what he would have most liked to see if he had vision, he answered, "Music on a page."
i seem to remember he was offered an operation to restore his sight and he refused....
I caught George Shearing, Dave Brubeck & Bill Evans at a Summer Evening Hollywood Bowl Concert entitled 'Piano Masters' in 79 but a few months before Bill Evans passed '& What a Concert under the stars it was...The Bowl was packed & you could hear a pin drop as All of us were so into the Music & These 3 musical giants jammed at the end for a Jazz piano finale I'll not soon forget......
