No one could scat better than the Velvet Fog, Mr. Mel Torme. He was so gifted.
Tone and phrasing are outrageous. Unlike so many, just got better with time. A blind man and a short guy named Melvin making greatness to live forever.
The man with the velvet voice!
Wow...just wow.....
I’m glad this historic performance at the Newport Casino Theater has been preserved. I was in the audience that night!
you are lucky to be a part of modern musical history
Am so jealous !!!!!!! What an honour !!! I am a vocalist and adore his repertoire!!❤
@@kevinherbert4256 You said it exactly right: modern musical history. You have a memory to treasure.
One of the best male jazz vocalist ever! Such a smooth beautiful tone to his voice. Crazy vocal flexibility. The best!
Mel Torme and George Shearing, it does not get any better.
Just doesn't get any better than this......the greats are still great even after they've passed on.......thanks Mel and George for the fabulous music.
2:55- Four Brothers
3:05- How High the Moon (in the bass)
3:10- On Green Dolphin Street
3:43- It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year (tag)
These guys are pure geniuses!
Mel was a real Jazz singer. Meaning, he could improvise his vocals in lyrics, notes and in scat singing. Pop singers today don't even know what I'm talking about, let alone actually do these things.
George Shearing piano is amazing , just hits all the gaps
Al Jarreau could do it too both vituosos
I can't believe how hip he sounded at that age.
Only one - I hope that the general public always has an appreciation for what Mel could do with that voice!
One of those absolutely perfect songs, done by a master!
oh yes .... there is no one like Mel Torme and I love to listen to him. Saw a couple of his shows many years ago with George Shearing and they were so great.
My initiation through childhood in the 60’s in Scotland were my fathers LP’s of Mel. I got a record player, my parents, before they upgraded, and played Mel’s music when I was 11. Mesmerising Mel X
Just great! I love it how Mel Torme gives the great George Shearing an affectionate and heartfelt hug (from behind) as he strolls onto the stage.
Beautiful. Reminds me of my parents. RIP Momma and poppa.
WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From a mad keen 73yo Aussie fan.
Incredible! And he was also a very good piano and drum player, and arranger!
Just Fantastic!!!!!
One of the best singers,& composers ever born
Way to go Mel!
Masterly.
Two old pros having fun.
Great gig!
fantastic love this
Perfect.
Stunning ❣️
In my next life, I want to come back as the female version of Mel Torme. My god, what talent.
Jennifer Vizzo that’s Ella lol
@@grahamhelft9994 just what I was gonna say!
@@grahamhelft9994 this right here!!!!
Elllla !!!!
It was just one of those things Just one of those crazy flings One of those bells that now and then rings Just one of those things It was just one of those nights Just one of those fabulous flights A trip to the moon on gossamer wings Just one of those things If we'd thought a bit, of the end of it When we started painting the town We'd have been aware that our love affair Was too hot, not to cool down So goodbye, dear, and Amen Here's hoping we meet now and then It was great fun But it was just one of those things
Amazing!
O man man man wat is ie GOED !!!!!!!
LOVE!
Один из самых моих любимых певцов, истинных джазменов!
One of my favorite singers, true jazzmen!
Torme too good. Could scat with Ella! Shearing with his locked hands technique/the best that ever was! Their quality has never been matched~~~~and never will be!!!
Artisti assolutamente deliziosi
Mel was the best, from the days when singing meant singing. Not like these idiots on X Factor, the Voice or Britain's got talent who seem to think that screaming and wailing is the way to do it. You know what mean. They should all be forced to watch Mel, Sarah Vaughan and Neets to learn how to deliver a song. The shit we have to put up with today is shocking.
WELL SAID.
I couldn’t have put it better myself !!!!!! I am a classically trained tenor and am using the same technique for performing jazz and it’s exhilarating!!!!!!!!!! I’m gonna stick to it !!! Watch this space !!!🎉😅
With a shout-out to Autotune!
Yes! Men to the moon...this....Wow!
I hope the audience appreciated what they were seeing
That piano....wow.
The legendary George Shearing for ya
Crazy!!!!!!!!
3:09 on green dolphin street!!!!
He was singing and rapping before rapping even existed. ;) (aka scatting)
Mel's was a really talented guy... the actor Harry Anderson of Night Court fame was a huge Torme fan, even got him on the show many times. There are re-runs of Night Court currently on the LAFF tv channel.
4.35 minute mark....these guys were not of this would....incredible
I wished I'd known how good Mel was when I was young.
I love the way making what he loves making him looking like a baby
Just to add to my previous comment, I recall Mel Torme being interviewed by Larry King (close to this time - maybe a year later). Anyway, Larry King asked Mel Torme how he was "compensating" for the "decline of his voice" during his current concert tour. It was such a loaded/stupid question (well it was Larry King, mind you) Mel defended himself - and the proof is right here in this clip. Mel Torme never lost a vocal step.
It just will never happen again. I saw George never got to see Mel
as a scat singer, one of a kind. Looks aged here, not sure if was pre or post stroke, but man could he deliver.
Great singer, songwriter and drummer. Too bad we do not have singers now like we did then.
Mel Torme was amazing and it saddens me that he is kind of over looked nowadays.
Wow! How do musicians navigate that rhythm flux from the Porter to the Kaper? : ) xo
Mel …… where are you now?
1:50 0:33 2:19
He surely has influenced Al Jarreau .
Both of them RIP .
Listen to the bass player!!
I can’t believe his age here, early 60’s! He looks 75.
Harsh!
@@johnmc3862 totally harsh - yet another sad UA-cam comment from a guy who lives in his mother’s basement at the age of 53, at least he got promoted to manager at the Taco Bell
The one and only with Frank the BEST!!!
+lffit : who ????
Frank Schmidt my neighbour
missed this one, the chairman of the board Francis Albert Sinatra @@acohen1980
I do respect Mr Sinatra, but I enjoy much more the one and only Mel Torme. If I had to watch one of both live, Mel would have been my choice no doubt, 1 and 10 times and more.
Sinatra gets too much credit. Ya he's great and he's the main guy but Sinatra was not so great a singer compared to Torme. Mel had it all. Smooth, swinging, scat master, heavy dramatic, complex phrasing, he used his voice in many different ways. His voice was like a damn trumpet when he would scat. Sinatra sings the same way in every song.
Mel sings jazz please get it straight
No wonder..A GREAT SINGER...MEL TORME...
