This video "Adding & Subtracting Real Numbers "is presented by " Algebra-1 with Mr. Peters.
As with integers, adding real numbers is done by following two rules. When the signs are the same, you add the absolute values of the addends and use the same sign. When the signs are different, you subtract the absolute values and use the same sign as the addend with the greater absolute value.
When adding real numbers with the same sign the sum will have the same sign as the numbers added. When adding real numbers with different signs you subtract the lesser absolute value from the greater one. The sum will then have the same sign as the number with the greater absolute value
When adding two numbers with like signs, add the values and keep the common sign. When adding two numbers with unlike signs, subtract the values and use the sign of the larger-valued number. Change the subtraction operator to add and change the sign of the number that immediately follows.
