My mom was orphaned as a two year old in 1931. She lived in a series of orphanages growing up, and her fondest memories were of a Catholic orphanage run by nuns in Illinois. They were so sweet to her that she thought of going into the convent (though she was a Protestant). The sisters didn’t think she had a true vocation however, but she did become a Catholic. In her thirties she went back to visit the sisters and I have a picture of her standing with them, in front of a building very similar to that one. Because of that background, I look at places like that with a great deal of affection. The children weren’t mistreated Jeff. It’s only in the movies that orphanages are terrible places. It’s not a workhouse out of Dickens. They taught her French and German and shorthand, and she was able to get a job as a newspaper reporter. Without places like that, my mom used to say, she would’ve ended up as a “working girl.”
Thanks for the footage. I have lived in Grass Valley for 38 yrs. and still love it. I had the opportunity to hear Lou Conter speak at different occasions through the years. He was an icon. RIP Lou. Not a criticism but you dated the pearl harbor attack as May 7 1941 instead of Dec. 7.
I used to be a delivery driver in the 70's. I worked in this area regularly. Grass valley and the entire area are beautiful and loaded with very interesting history.

I was thinking the same thing! Time has stood still in some areas. Modernity has also crept into some areas. A mile or two away is a Target store, which I had to visit to buy cough medicine! LOL
Great episode...I've never been to GV so you taught me something. The war hero is a reminder of what men used to be like...the Greatest Generation...we have seen the brightest, most courageous and the best. Thank you Jeff and Sarah for your hard work and efforts with these videos. I hope you're feeling better after the cold. ❤

@@jbenziggy You showed the Washington Brewery building, I live next door in the green building, built in 1892....was a very famous bordello during the goldrush, very beautiful inside , ornate detailed Victorian, brick walls etc. Looks like you filmed on a rainy Sunday, town was pretty calm. No I didn't see you probably at work. I work on Mill street on the plaza. Anyway that was great footage . I walk downtown everyday and you hit the historical context damn good !!! 👍Try Cornish Christmas downtown , over the top holiday celebration! Heads up parking is tricky but worth it . Wow never knew all that about Grass Valley. Sad stories for the orphans.....good story for Lotta. I wonder if she donated to the orphaned. The town did a favor in reusing the old buildings over the years-- something we don't always see. Love the old Packard sign too in good repair. You never disappoint with your shows. Thanks Jeff and Sarah!
It's such a charming community and so is the one next to it, Nevada City which we will also be featuring soon! Thanks for being so supportive and encouraging of our efforts! As far as Lotta, surely she did support orphanages but not sure about the one in Grass Valley. She was young when she left.
We love Grassvalley. We spent a week there in June. Thanks for identifying some of the buildings we saw and the history behind them. Wonderful video. Fantastic job with the history of the area.
