My mom was orphaned as a two year old in 1931. She lived in a series of orphanages growing up, and her fondest memories were of a Catholic orphanage run by nuns in Illinois. They were so sweet to her that she thought of going into the convent (though she was a Protestant). The sisters didn’t think she had a true vocation however, but she did become a Catholic. In her thirties she went back to visit the sisters and I have a picture of her standing with them, in front of a building very similar to that one. Because of that background, I look at places like that with a great deal of affection. The children weren’t mistreated Jeff. It’s only in the movies that orphanages are terrible places. It’s not a workhouse out of Dickens. They taught her French and German and shorthand, and she was able to get a job as a newspaper reporter.
Without places like that, my mom used to say, she would’ve ended up as a “working girl.”

Thanks for the footage. I have lived in Grass Valley for 38 yrs. and still love it. I had the opportunity to hear Lou Conter speak at different occasions through the years. He was an icon. RIP Lou. Not a criticism but you dated the pearl harbor attack as May 7 1941 instead of Dec. 7.

We love all your videos. We used to visit the Grass Valley area a lot. My husband's great uncle had a gold mine claim on the Southfork Yuba River. It was quite a trek down in there but so beautiful. I just saw the video with your Vaca to see the Dolphins etc. It was so good. Love seeing all your family. We love you and Sarah very much. We appreciate the videos. We can't travel much anymore. We're in our 70ies. ❤

One cannot find a more supportive and kind soul as you sir. Thank you so much for being a shining light to me and to others in your community. We feel very blessed to have the success that we are currently receiving from our efforts because I know there are a lot of people on UA-cam who, for one reason or another, find no traction in their channel. But I want to encourage them if they’re reading this that it takes persistence and regular efforts to post videos. Thank you once again, dear brother.

Thank you Jeff for the tribute to the last living naval officer from the Arizona! It is difficult to imagine that all those people that were part of that era are slowly diminishing and we are slowly growing older ourselves. Thank you for the tour of Grass Valley as well, it is a beautiful city in that area with all the old buildings and Gold Rush history. Appreciate the video and we'll see you next Sunday. 😅

Thank you for telling/showing us the town my great great grandparents lived. I live in Michigan so getting a chance to visit the town is probably not going to happen, but you made it possible! Thank you!

Well Jeff, once again you did an outstanding job! Reading the comments from people, no matter where they are in this world appreciate you and History Hunters! On one of our trips on Hwy 49 we passed thru Grass Valley very quickly to get to Nevada City and the Bed and breakfast. I can see now that was a mistake! Your video and back story now make me want to go back! I know it's a lot of work for you and Sarah, we as your fans really do appreciate it! I do have to tell you though I was jealous of the weather you were in ❤ I absolutely love our states gold mining history! You're more than correct that there was terrible things that happened in search of riches, I want to believe that the majority of those men wanted a better life for their families! Thanks again!
