- Listen up Citizen! In this tutorial we show you how to paint your Warhammer 40,000 Tyranids in the scheme of the Warrior Bugs from Starship Troopers. This classic sci-fi film provides great inspiration across the board and we reckon a Tyranid army done in these colours would look amazing on the table top.

These are the rules. Everybody paints, nobody quits!
Have an amazing weekend everyone :-)
This is amazing, I know you already did hive fleet hadleys hope, but woiuld you consider doing some more xenomroph tutorials. The games add a lot more variety to the classic black/off grey blue color scheme. Cheers mate
oooo or maybe a kasirkin in the colonial marines colours from aliens
"Put yer paintin' hand onnnn that wall!"
I'm doing my part!
I Really Hope you do more guides for other Bug schemes from Starship Troopers!
Your basic tyranid warrior isn't too smart, but you can blow off a limb, and it's still 86 percent combat effective. Here's a tip: Aim for the nerve stem and put it down for good
😁
Psi-ops playing mind games

To paint the bug, we must first understand the bug! We can ill afford another Klendathu.
That's right Citizen!
*Klendathu Drop theme intesifies*
The Imperial Guard made me into the man I am today!
*Replacement eye, leg and arm*
At least you survived!😅
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Sir! This ape does not want to live forever, Sir!
Those of us who also read the book KNOW what that scene REALLY means!

Massive props to the editor
That'll be the other half of the Academy...Rog 😊
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Cheers, Rog. You're stellar!

"I'm doing my part!"
Good for you.
"Synapse creatures? Frankly, I find the idea of a bug that thinks o-ffensive!"
Great paint scheme. Starship Troopers made me the tyranid fan I am today!
I absolutely love these themed videos. Really spices up the normal how to paint formula.
Glad you like them! They are a challenge lol
I agree, really keeping things fun and interesting
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA I can absolutely see how they would be. Either way, love the content!
As a big Starship Troopers fan, this is truly glorious.
Awesome
Just need some cadians painted up with like the mobile infantry, and a commissar that looks like NPH
I AM DOING MY PART!
The Neil Patrick Harris intro was just *chef’s kiss* beautiful.
Thanks :-) It was fun lol
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA That lab coat was indeed a nice touch!
This is absolutely a splinter of Hive Fleet Jormungandr.
Yes, we're guessing GW was inspired by the 1997 classic.
@@DuncanRhodesDRPAas one of gw main painters (atleast the face for the community) did you develop the paintshemes for new factions?
Duncan, I was huge into 40k from about 1999 through 2009, when I gave it up to focus on college and since I no longer had friends to play with and my local stores had closed. Long story short, I moved a while ago, made new friends, a couple of them are nerds of the highest order and when 10th edition 40k started making news we decided to get back into it, and I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the hobby. Back then, I never really tried to paint "correctly" or followed guides, I didn't develop the patience for it. My armies were relatively clean but very lumpy and unfinished looking. This time though I am deliberately looking up how to paint, and your channel has been absolutely amazing. Even with my "first" real tries at painting minis it's miles ahead of where I left off 14 years ago despite not having touched paints since then. Thank you for such great production and sharing your experience.
It's our pleasure and welcome back to this great hobby. If you are interested, we have a subscription-based website (www.duncanrhodes.com) where we have tons of videos not on UA-cam plus a full beginners/ refreshers course for members. We don't usually up sell, but it might be worth a look-see.
Imagine a 2000 points army of that, probably 5000 hours of work.
😅 yes
As long as you do your part, the federation will support you

@@Tropic_ReconI AM DOING MY PART!
I don't know why but Duncan playing along yet not fully committing to the bit actually made this even better than it should've been.
Finally a perfect Starship Troopers Arachnid paint scheme. Thank you.
Glad you like it!
I absolutely love this colour scheme. At first glance it looks like it'd be a real pain to paint an entire army like this, but it seems like it'd lend itself pretty well to batch painting.
Sure does. It's not as hard as you might think.
That looks sick. If I had a tyranid army, I probably would base them off either xenomorphs or arachnids.
Agreed! They work so well as either plus it's always fun to riff off a classic film
Xenomorphs don't translate well to paint schemes on miniatures, however. As they are mostly dark, with only hints of reflective, glossy color, and as the Tyranids have structurally become very different from xenomorphs, it just ends up looking like they were primed black with a gloss coat.
@@saltedllama2759 I feel like you can make it work with enough highlighting/drybrushing (probably using some silvers, greys, or dark blues).
@@dominicscreativefilmsI have done a kill team of them. Chaos black, dark reaper and fenrisian grey, with a gloss clear coat
*** DESIRE TO KNOW MORE INTENSIFIES ***
That pattern is great, very organic! The technique would work great for dinosaur models too!
I love how the colours stand out so boldly. I like how the bugs have different colours for different subspecies. It'd be awesome to see you do that for the tyranids.
Painting guarantees citizenship! Love it, great video.
That looks amazing and would no doubt be incredibly impressive on the tabletop - but it's so full of freehand details that the thought of trying to get a horde army of these monsters painted in anything approaching a reasonable timespan fills me with dread...
...but it would be worth it!
That's so freaking cool man. Lifelong Tyranid player so seeing us in the limelight for a bit is so nice.
Honestly, this is amazing. As a big starship troopers fan this made my day. The possibilities for kitbash/customisations. I can already see a space marine hand with a knife though it stapled to a base!
Thanks for such a great video.
I am loving these movie reference paint schemes and videos. I wonder which one is next in the pipeline (can’t wait!)
I love this theme, little known fact in the spirit of this theme. The movies desert scenes were filmed in what is known as the "Red Desert" in the state of Wyoming. I live but 2 hours from the filiming location.
Nice!
That gloss over the eyes is really good advice. I can feel it watching me even through the video, now imagine a hundred eyes doing that on the battlefield!
Right?!
That intro though! Duncan killed it!
I’d love to see a battle report of Imperial Guard VS Tyrannids with this color scheme!
Mate, all those references and quotes... I have never seen something so glorious, Duncan clearly doing his part! setting a fine example of what a true Citizen looks like and represents.
So much of it, exact words of the text..... however, If you're mate is getting through progress faster than you... Just remember, the enemy cannot paint a miniature, if you disable his hand 🫲
This is awesome. I would love to see a whole army painted like this. Different bugs with different paint schemes. This is really cool.
It would look cool wouldn't it?
Always wanted to try this colour scheme out on a Tyranid model. Great tutorial!
These themed schemes and the humor is why this is the best painting channel.
To throw out a recommendation how about: Seraphon Jurassic Park scheme!
Fantastic video and paint job! Would personally put some more yellow overall, but this is still too cool! Been thinking of doing this scheme for my Leviathan box so this is pretty well timed!
Awesome. Looking at all the reference images we could find, they do vary. Some have lots of red and others lots of yellow. It would be fun to vary it 😊
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Its such a fun color scheme cause as long as you follow the main colors, you can do it however you want!
You've done it. You've made the best UA-cam video.
Wow, thanks! Maybe not the best (but we do appreciate the kind words) 😊
I literally had given a large amount of time and consideration to doing an army with the theme you have made here all the way back in 2017. Sadly I was a complete novice as far as painting was concerned so I changed course and went with a Raven Guard army to get my feet wet. For years I have always returned to the concept of the Klendathu army and made zero progress. Thank you for making this, because I always got bogged down with how to make it translate when the bugs are so vastly different in appearance to the Tyranids. You rock!!!
Just beautiful and well inspired !
Bravo Duncan !
Wow that looks so striking and translated really well. Love the video, Duncan!
Amazing pattern and colors. I love the way you interpreted the bug coloring
Amazing!!! This Video is the definition of why I will love this hobby as long as I am alive.❤
Fantastic job, you made the warrior bug colors work on a Tyranid! Hive Fleet Klendathu is a challenging scheme but would make for a very impressive army once done. Happy painting and good luck to any who choose this color scheme!
WOW, very well done. Thanks for all the great work Duncan.
Awesome color scheme. Looks cool on the tyranids. I loved the movie when I was Young and I still do today haha. C´mon you apes, do you wanna live forever?!
These thematic intro/episodes are great, nice work Duncan and team.
Amazing work as always!!!
Thanks, Im glad you enjoyed it :-)
As soon as I saw the title "Hive Fleet Klendathu" I knew you'd have an absolute field day with this one!
Excellent video as always. Love how it came out (not that I'd cherish painting 30-40 of them!)
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m a simple man. I like Starship Troopers, Warhammer 40,000, and Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy.
Sweeeetttt
This is exactly that theme I was planning on doing, I am beyond grateful for this tutorial.
The commitment to the bit elevates this so much
I love watching how amazing you can make things look
Thanks :-)
Good for you son, the Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy made me the man i am today.
Goddamnit I was so excited to do a Starship troopers paint scheme for my next video. 😂
Well played sir, well played.
Go for it!
Simply gorgeous. Well done! Its gorgeous!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
That went completely different from what I was expecting and that colour scheme is absolutely badass! I thought it would end up looking similar to a black and yellow colour scheme I saw years ago in a white dwarf magazine
Awesome, thanks. Its a fun scheme
The black and yellow one is Hive Fleet Jormungandr. It was featured in an earlier edition rulebook. And it was also inspired from the movie.
This is why I love nids and can’t wait to paint that part of my leviathan box. So many possibilities!
Excellent video. This color scheme looks like it’d lend itself easily to batch painting.
Another cracking job, Duncan!
Nids really do allow for going completely crazy with painting. Almost anything can and will work on the bugs. The Starship Troopers bugs are a great choice for a colour scheme.
Very true! There are some amazing colour schemes out there for sure.
I'd use Exocrines for the Plasma Bugs, paint them that iridescent blue/black carapace with the glowing blue plasma for the canon. Maybe carnifex for Tiger bugs. That black and yellow tiger stripe pattern would look great on them. Pyrovores seem pretty perfect for Tankers.
Perfect!
Cool video and pant scheme idea! Thanks for sharing, glad to see you using your own paint line too.
I've been struggling on what scheme to do for my nids. I wanted to the warrior bugs and this is super helpful
Amazing work. I immediately adapted your colour scheme for my nids.
That came out so great! I went with a pinkish skin and purple armor scheme with a blue design. But like you said, not all bugs look the same! I do get a lot out of your videos! So thanks and keep up the good work!!!
I'm definitely having a go at this and your paints that I won with my Urk'Pug at Black dragon Games Melton painting competition are perfect for this!!
I have been absolutely aching for this one.
Duncan you are a joy to watch
This scheme came out fantastic!
I'm doing a klendathu theme for my tyranids but using a white base coat, blocking the carapace and flesh with red / yellow contrast then using black paints to build the pattern
That sounds awesome!
I love this painting! ❤
I've still got the Battle For Macragge Tyranids from nearly 20 years ago (plus somewhere a 3rd Carnifex) unpainted... suddenly have some inspiration to vaguely mimic this brilliant scheme (which then risks turning into a Combat Patrol!).
As always, loved the video and really enjoyed the movie references throughout. 🖖🏻
The new biovores and pyrovors will look amazing with this painting
Why yes, I would indeed like to know more!
Fantastic video as always.
Awesome, thank you!
Duncan forever in our hearts in two thin coats!
Thank you
Nice, starting Jörmungandr soon, so the timing on this is perfect! Thanks, Duncan!
Ive never seen someone look so comfortable talking on camera as Duncan!
Plenty of practice lol
Awesome scheme!! Thanks Duncan
Thanks! It was fun to paint and we reckon an army of these guys swarming over the table top would look pretty cool!
Liked it before it's started because I already know it will be awesome
As someone who saw this in the theaters as a lad, around the same time I was getting into 2nd edition, this is freaking amazing.
"Naked Force Has Resolved More Conflicts Throughout History Than Any Other Factor"
I love this idea and I'm disappointed I didnt think of it. Recently listened to the audio book (Very different) after loving the movie for... Years.
Love these starship troopers videos
Epic as always!
Thanks
Duncan, when they do the youtube oscars for acting, you've got my vote!
Razzies maybe 🤣
This was so well done.
This tutorial has left me 86% undecided about how to paint my tyranids. Going to paint a test model to lock in the scheme for good
Fantastic video, so well done! Amazing colour scheme, although I don’t fancy trying it for a full force. Love Starship Troopers, so this video was just what I needed today.

Oh yeah, the theming for this was spot on!
Bloody brilliant video!
Love it! Awesome video.
Thanks so much!
Great video love the interpretation on to the nid ! Thanks for sharing 🍻👍
wonderful vid love starship troopers
Didn't realize when I woke up I needed this but I really did. Thank you
Our pleasure :-)
Top tier production quality
Great finish to a cool video
Absolutely amazing
Thanks :-)
Love these Starship Troopers vids!
Us too!
Thanks for that intro...it made my day
Glad to hear it and thanks for watching :-)
Might be my favorite tyranid colour scheme
Duncan you're a legend
I love the idea of painting the gun as a different critter! little surprised you didn't go for the Chariot Bugs as the inspo for it tho.
