Whoo-hoo! Got it! (I'll admit that I'm playing it at only about 2/3 of the speed that you play it on this video, but it's getting there!) Thank you, Mr. Pankey. Four and a half months ago I began with Lesson One of your 10-lesson UA-cam series. What a tremendous difference it makes to learn from an outstanding teacher! And what a genuine pleasure it is too!
Jim I just want to say thank you I have not commented on any of your videos in the past but I have watched every one of them I have now been playing the banjo for one year and two months using your lessons exclusively and I am proud to say that I can sit down and play and enjoy my time playing. I have every day for the last year, you are an amazing teacher and I love how you break down the songs and make it learnable thank you so much
Thank you for offering the tab on this one, Jim. The extra help and added break really makes this one challenging but rewarding. Still working on the Melodic break, but each run through just makes the first 4 a little smoother, and being able to fall back on both the video and tab is also a big help.
Jim, firstly glad to hear that your health is improving. I'm happy to hear that you are recovering. While you where away I've been pecking through this tune. It's taken some time to get through but I can almost keep up with you at this point. I'm working on the melodic break and the outro bit. This is hands down my favorite song to play now that it sounds like a song. Thanks again for everything that you have done. I love playing the banjo with you and I hope I can keep learning from you for a good long while. Thanks Jim for what you do.
Thanks Jim, I love this tune. its so nice to be able to play some more melodic tunes now and then, this fits the bill. Keep up the teaching, great job.
Thanks Jim, I have been watching your videos for about two months now, and I am really enjoying my banjo. You make it very easy and I have watched your beginning series and have learned a lot. My wife loves when I play this song, well when I attempt to play it . Anyways thanks for your help.
Didn't even know that when you write the time in the comments that it's like a link to this exact moment. 10:43 this is where the song begins. thanks Jim, it’s even easier to learn!
What a great tune, unusual and with surprising and melodic elements. And a big challenge to learn, at least for me. But Jim breaks it down in his very lovely style to manageable pieces, somewhat like the old saying how to eat an elephant bite by bite. I'm finally making some progress now and are currently working at the 2nd break. Somewhat like a huge puzzle that I enjoy learning it so much. Bought your tabs so you can enjoy a beer or to from me, cheers!
Bought the tabs. They help quite a bit. (just a couple bucks) I'm a beginner and am able to muddle my way through this. Jim you are my favourite banjo teacher.
I misplaced my good quality finger picks. Bought some cheap, no-name brand replacement ones. They're so hard, even with pliers I cannot bend them into the right shape. Thanks for another great video!
After watching a number of different excellent musicians, like you, the vast majority of them are not good teachers...at least using UA-cam as a teaching tool. You however, are really good at it! Now, I know you can play at lightning speeds, most good players can. However, speed in my humble opinion is a bit irritating. A nice clip is great because we can hear every note. So, thank you Jim, thank you.
Hey Jim, great video, I'm about 2/3 rds of the way through and picking it up well, great teaching method, I like to get one section of pat (slow speed) before moving on to the next. I've owned a banjo for about 2 years now but my playing was irregular as some teachers I find are more about how good they are rather than teaching. Since watching your videos I'm playing every night now and it's coming on grand, keep up the great work buddy, Davy.
Hey Jim, great video, I've watched it so much the last while and am picking up some speed now, thanks, also watched your live stream, brilliant, any chance of some more gospel stuff, maybe 10,000 reasons, Davy.
HI Jim. I started learning Doug's Tune yesterday and started looking for examples today. Went into You Tube and found your video. Thank you for making it. I then tried to call up the tab but have been unable to get it. would you please let me know how to find it. Thanks Marty Malles (Asheville, NC)
You can do it. Check out Trevor here: Trevor Holder - Doug's Tune ua-cam.com/video/pbEgMQT3jDY/v-deo.html He's got small hands but manages that stretch at about 50 second mark.
Jim you really are the man, you are such a great teacher, thanks for sharing, you really are an inspiration. The tune I wish you would teach is Deputy Dalton which ai believe uses a bit of Dougs roll 1215 1215 .
Isn't it played with a capo at the 3rd fret? I learned the guitar part and I learned it that way. Plus if you watch the Andy Griffith Show, the guitar is capoed at the 3rd fret. I don't play banjo so I am guessing.
And sometimes it’s played capoed at the 4th fret. I’ve also seen it capoed at 3. So…. Play it capoed where you want. Doesn’t change how the tune is played.

Without restringing your guitar it could be difficult. It's all fun and games until you get to the fifth string. 1st string is D 2nd string is B (just like guitar) 3rd string is G (just like guitar) 4th string is D (yup, like guitar) and here's where it's tricky: 5th string is G - and octave higher than you 3rd string. You can probably get a .009 to tune up to that G... I'd probably use a .008 Good luck!
Learned it and love it, but there isn't a tutorial of how to play the ending on either this or the melodic lesson. Is there somewhere I can learn this ending you can direct me to? And of course, thanks for everything! Wait! I forgot I can slow these things down. I'll get it.

Then slide down to 2nd fret third string, 1st fret 2nd string, open 5th string, 1st fret 1st string, open third string then strum down open 5th, 4th 3rd and 2nd and 2nd fret 1st string.
