I remember the first time seeing this film and let me tell you, I couldn’t make up my mind all throughout the film. One minute it looked like the dad was right and the next it looked like he was psychotic. Paxton was an amazing actor and he is dearly missed.
I remember watching this movie about 18 years ago on HBO in college. I was absolutely floored at how good it was, and it proved to me how good of an actor McCaughnahey is. I never realized, really, that Paxton directed it.
I was obsessed with this movie for a while in high school. I loved listening to Paxton's and the writer's commentary and hearing how much thought went into stuff. Bill Paxton was one of those amazing actors who could play a scumbag car dealer, a sadistic vampire, an axe murderer, etc and still come off likeable/sympathetic.
My parents rented Frailty at Blockbuster when it came out and we all really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, it's always been one of those movies that no one has heard of. Thank you for putting a spotlight on this gem of a movie.
A truly underappreciated gem of a movie. Solidly directed and good performances from Paxton and Matthew McConaughey. Not to mention a great twist in the end. Wish more people knew/talked about it.
Frailty is one of my favorite movies. it's hard to convince people to watch it, because explaining the story in any way feels like a spoiler to me. Thank you so much for bringing some more attention to it!
I had an axe just like that one and I used it for cutting trees and chopping wood. The axe is also resting in a chopping block. I always assumed (and still do) that Otis was the name of the owner, and "Dad" just stole it.
Years ago a friend of mine showed me Frailty, I was amazed at how I had never heard of such a great movie. It's a shame that a lot of people have never even heard of this masterpiece.
i saw frailty as an early teen, didn't much care for it but i watched it again as an adult and my god was it amazing, never realized Paxton directed it and it makes me like it even more

It's weird seeing this and knowing Spy Kids 2 came RIGHT after it, and had both Bill Paxton and the actor who played young Fenton. And then the kid who plays Adam is the live-action Peter Pan from 2003.
This is one of my favorite suspense/horror movies. It's one I always recommend as an opposition to modern horror which for a while there was nothing but jump scares and torture porn.
5 words: “I Really Miss Bill Paxton.” Fun Fact: Bill saw JFK in Dallas when he was a little kid when he couldn’t see thru the crowd and a guy put him up on his shoulders to see JFK so cool this was set in the Dallas area; This movie was awesome
Bill Paxton is from the city im from Ft Worth Tx..36 miles west of Dallas..The DFW Metroplex is very proud of Mr Paxton..To bad it had to be made in California in the Hollywood studios instead of Texas..
I saw this when it was released. And it was great to rewatch over the years. It's one of those movies I wish I could see again for the first time. A rare gem that more people should be aware of.
I enjoyed this movie a lot. I was 100% on the side of the 'sensible' son while watching it and found the end mind blowing. Also, my mind keeps replacing the phrase 'god hand' with 'pimp hand'.
I wish Bill Paxton could’ve directed more films like this before we lost him. He did an amazing job behind the camera in addition to his onscreen performance plus he gave us a glimpse of serious McConaughey like “A Time to Kill” did and the future McConaussiance
I gotta admit, I love how the news videos start on without the old intro. Too loud compared to the narrative's voice, always had to skip it manually, not ideal to binge wath your reviews. Really good stuff you have going. Thanks for the good stuff ! (and for taking off the metal intro ^^)
This is one of my absolute favorites! Thank you for going into such amazing detail. I know that many times youtube makes things difficult for genuinely talented and intelligent creators like yourself to thrive here. These videos are, at their core, obviously a labor of love and it shows with how much care, research and quality is evident in each one. So thanks again for breaking down Frailty; I was SO EXCITED to see that you had covered it!
Frailty, Fallen, and Se7en are my trifecta of favorite horror-thrillers. And as horror movies are my favorite (just about the only movies I watch), I guess that makes them my favorites. Good to see this one getting some love!
I don't even remember how I came across this movie. I think I was bored, saw it had Bill Paxton (I'm a big fan) and sat down to watch it. One of my favorite movies.
Yess new review!!! Completely forgot I watched this movie but once I saw the kid digging the hole it all came back to me. Such an underrated film and you’re right Paxton would have been an amazing director if he kept going.
I saw this in theatres when it first came out. I remember being disappointed because I wanted it to be more visceral, I think I may have been fooled by the trailers, but as years went on I started to realize how great it was and my view of it drastically changed!
Nicely done, man! I worked part-time at a movie theater when this came out. I remember peeking in occasionally and catching more and more little things that I missed on the first watch.
Thank you for doing an in depth review of this classic thriller. It's one of those movies that stays in your subconscious throughout the rest of you life.👍
I loved this movie the first time I saw it. I love twist endings and this one caught me totally off guard. When I watched it I assumed the dad was crazy so I felt sorry for Fenton. It made me feel uncomfortable too. But that ending made this movie one of my favorites. And can I also say I’m glad your doing reviews again.
Always such a rare and pleasant treat to find someone who discusses this little gem of a film in detail, and raises more awareness for it. Dad sat me down to watch this with him for the central themes of faith and family. The plot caught his attention largely because of his background in theology -- the same reason I shared films like "Constantine" with him -- and we both agreed that the way the killings are never represented as anything truly righteous or justified was an element that really made this movie striking. Indeed, bravo Bill Paxton. May he and dad both enjoy a good in depth discussion or two in the great beyond. And as always, thank you Deausdeacon for another inimitable review for a personal favorite flick.
Ahhh!!! Damn, I have always been fascinated by this movie since it hit my local Blockbuster, and how have i always missed the fact Bill Paxton directed it til just now?!! Wtf. Great job explaining the film, especially the ending which i always thought they intended as you say, but in the late 90’s/early zeds everything was so god damn twisty turny this just fell into the fray. Another great vid!
What a great review. Frailty was a very pleasant surprise and i always mention it when folks ask about a good movie. It’s on my list. I recognize your HPL collection on the bookshelf. I have one just like it. As luck would have it, my next dnd character inspired by this
Absolutely GREAT review and breakdown man! I've always loved this movie, and wished it had been able to have at least one (just as well made) companion piece! McConaughey doing a type of sequel, raising up the next generation of "demon slayer", would be a MUCH welcome film to all of us who are old enough to have seen this one upon it's release! I really hate that Bill Paxton and Powers Boothe are no longer with us! They were both definitely VERY talented, unique, and significant actors of their generation! 👍
I've always enjoyed this movie - glad to see you cover it. I'm surprised more people don't know about this film - it's excellent! I recommend it whenever I get a chance. Thanks for another great video!
It'd be cool to see you do the occasional band/album review. Also excellent video, I've had this film on DVD for years and never watched it for some reason. Gonna have to give it a watch now
I love this movie, btw there is another fan theory about this movie: Adam and his father are actually and unknowingly working for the devil disposing of his servants when he is done with them. I don’t know if I believe it but it’s interesting to think about
@@deusdeaconReviews I don't know about evidence but I think it stems from the fact that they waited till after the people they killed had already done their "sins". Like I said, I'm not entirely sold on it myself but I thought worth mentioning. Keep up the good work!
One of my favorite movies. When I first watched it, it was the part where you find out that Fenton is actually Adam until the end from that point then watched the movie from the start and I thought it was amazing.
@@deusdeaconReviews I do that sometimes to save money. I always wanted one of those brain sucking flying metal balls from Phantasm, but the cheapest one is around a thousand bucks. It'll be easier to just make one.
This film reminds me of, both in themes and in the emotions it draws, the biblical story of God telling Abraham to kill his son. That story haunted me as a child and made me so upset to imagine a god who could possibly tell someone he supposedly loves to murder their child. Frailty brings about similar feelings.
I have had the ending of this movie stuck in my head for almost two decades and never knew the name of it. I saw my mom and brother watching it when I was a kid when I caught the ending, and I have been wondering if I would ever know the name of the movie ever since. This review not only helped me put a title to the memory of the film, but it let me know I have to put this in for movie night with my friends.
