I really liked this one. I think it's a pretty underrated film. The story is interesting, creepy, and not too over the top with horror. Everything plays a part and makes sense by the end. I did really like the ending as well, in what seems like a "nice and friendly neighborhood" hides so many skeletons in the closet. Kevin Bacon is awesome and I liked his descent into madness which was entertaining to watch and understandable with what's been happening around him. I will say I prefer how the hypnotic suggestion was presented in the film over the book. I haven't read it but from how you've described it, 'his mind is free', that really reminds me of the film Insidious. I prefer this version as it gives the impression that before, the door may have been slightly ajar like he might see something in the corner of his eye or have a strong gut feeling about things sometimes like most ordinary people, even though his son is fully gifted. However, now his door/mind is completely open and anything can get in. He can't stop it, has no control of it, and doesn't yet understand what is shown to him at the beginning. It's like, he really was more or less ordinary before but now he's got his wish.
I think it's an amazing movie with some extremely underrated acting and writing. The best part to me is the way the story plays with Tom's preconception of 'ordinary' - at first, the idea of being ordinary is painful to him, but as his perception changes he comes to understand that the 'ordinary' neighborhood he's a part of has a hidden and sinister side (much like the 'ordinary' reality he'd become accustomed to has this entire hidden supernatural world existing just beneath it outside of everyone's view). Finally, when all is said and done, he ends up finding solace in embracing an ordinary existence once more.
It is very good. Shame I didn't appreciate it the first time I saw it on DVD. I was still at that age where I needed to have monsters and ghosts popping out every few minutes. I didn't appreciate the merits of good moody and atmospheric storytelling back when I was younger.
Such a good movie. I cry every time. That descent into hell is creepy af but I wouldn't consider it horror or even thriller. It's more pure drama to me.
I know you don't have time to mention everything, but I liked the cool and competent Kathryn Erbe in this film. She isn't a damsel in distress, she isn't a scream queen, she doesn't wait around for the guy to do something. I really love her as an actress and think she doesn't get much notice , which is too bad.
The Incredible Shrinking Man is one of my favourite movies. I didn't know it was based on a book by the same author that gave us I Am Legend/The Omega Man (there's also The Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price by the way).
I watched this on a bored night in the house last summer, I’m not usually a big fan of ghost/supernatural horror movies but this one really hit the spot. Thanks for another great review and hope you’re doing well this spring!
i love this channel. knowledgeable but not pretentious.. insightful and hilarious.. normally 30 - 40 minute videos are just too long for me, but here it never has a problem holding my attention.
I remember randomly watching this as a younger "adult" and being surprised at how hard it was to fully grasp. It really didn't clarify itself for the non-observant and I really enjoyed watching it and trying to figure out what was going on. Great movie, and great synopsis.
Hell yea another review I love it this is one of my favorite movies a definite go to at Halloween!!! I love this channel so incredibly detailed and your voice is so hypnotic and sexy!!! Love it man keep up the amazing work!!!
Another fantastic review, I always appreciate the amazing attention to detail and care that you put into all your work. I have always enjoyed this movie and return to it every now and then when I’m in need of a decent spooky story. I couldn’t agree more about modern supernatural films ALL devolving into noisy, over the top chaos! I have lost track of the number of movies that have started brilliantly, maintained a good slow burn only to loose the plot, literally, in the last 20 minutes. I have come to dread the endings for that reason! But thanks again for your awesome reviews, I am always thrilled to get the notification!
Not only is the fact that Kevin Bacon using the real pick axe with an injured shoulder commendable, but the fact he was still able to act through the pain well enough that you would never know it unless you were told is nothing short of amazing!
Great review. I remember watching bits of this movie when I was a kid, always was interested in it. Speaking of Richard Matheson, maybe one day you could take a look at Steven Spielberg's anthology series Amazing Stories (the original 1985 version). Matheson worked as a creative consultant on 12 episodes of the show, and he even got to write two episodes ("The Doll" and "One For The Books", the second one was even based on one of his short stories). Even two of his children, Ali Marie and Richard Christian, got to write episodes of the show (Ali Marie wrote the episode "Lane Change", while Richard Christian wrote the episodes "Magic Saturday" and "Miss Stardust", with the second one also being based on one of his father's short stories)
Have you seen the movie Cold Skin (2017)? It basically The Lighthouse focusing more on Lovecraft. The cinematography and effects looks great for a movie with a budget of $10M.
Hey, Huge fan of Matheson, here. Super psyched to see you showing him some love, he's discussed far less than he should be (I feel) and this is a very cool video. That said, I believe you may have left out of one of the film adaptations of his novel I Am Legend, the Vincent Price flick The Last Man on Earth.
Brilliant choice to critique deus, commenting before watching so looking forward to this one. Remember stealing this from my parents collection when I was younger and I actually remember loving it for what it was. Plus DA BACON.
I can remember an episode from Johnny Bravo: "There is a clown on the wing of the plane" and not only that the show made way more references to twilight zone...
You're vids are awesome . I love each of them , no matter how trash a movie could be , you turn it into gold ❤. Thank you, this was awesome glad you reviewed it .
Ooh! I remember my dad getting this for me on DVD nearly 15 years ago. I watched it once, and then I put it away and lost it because I was too young to appreciate moody and atmospheric films that didn't have ghosts and monsters popping out every few minutes back when I was younger.
We need more coverage of Richard Matheson adaptions; we have 3 versions of “I am Legend”, there’s “Legend of Hell House (from his novel ‘Hell House’), “What Dreams May Come” and more
Ah, I remember renting this one from the local library to watch with my mum (we're both Kevin Bacon fans) when I was about 12/13 and quite enjoying it. It's been over a decade since my last watch.
Oh I have fond memories of this movie! My sister and I snuck into the movies, as it was rated R. Somehow it stuck with me (not in a bad way) and watched it in my twenties again. Unlike many other films that lose their magic if you watched it as a grownup I throughly enjoyed it the 2nd round too.
I know this is an older video, but my wife had a superpower or guardian angel. On MANY occasions, we, at her direction, have left early or late and avoided big accidents. Once if we had left when we intended, we would have hit head on by a speeding mustang. And more recently, she felt like she was going to be late and left early, she would have been a part of a multicar collision that might have harmed if not killed her. But the kid complaining about being scared of the feathers hit pretty close to home.
I really though you were going to say "Downstairs its clear something is happening to him as he is incredibly thirsty, and finds a shoe in the freezer" 😆
The feathers thing. I kinda figured the mom would have told her son, he he wasn't able to retreat from the house when the guy grabs the mother, she would have said "Go to your room" and i think he would have curled under his bed or gotten under the covers. But that is just where my mind went when i watched this, some time ago.
why would she take her sun into a situation she’s feels requires a knife for safety, its make more sense that she tell him to stay in the locked car while she makes sure all is safe.
