Haha so true ive learned so much these last months since i found this channel. But there is a silver lining no one can play this game perfectly, what works with 1 team and 1 specific type of players might not work with others even if you do everything right. A example i had just a few hours ago in my game that i havent experienced before, all was going well i overperformed the first 10 games i had good dynamics and moral all around. Suddenly like lightning from the sky one of my influencial players descided even though i was giving him playing time and he did not perform to say that moral somehow wasnt good. This crashed my entire team moral aswell and i went on a 4 game losing streak and draw the next. I cant imagine i actually did something wrong but here i am at risk of getting fired and thats just FM it happens. Now ive sold him in hopes this will help, i had a team meeting that boost my moral aswell but i have no confidence in that player again because behaving so badly for no reason so hes gone with the wind.
Just watched the video and while I do agree with most of the stuff I wish you'd show examples from the match engine, stuff like heat map, average position etc. Replay the same game 7 times without changing the mentality the whole game and see how that influences passes, dribbles, positioning, pressing
I follows Bust The Net's advice regarding mentality. Its actually risque taking. With Very Defensive as "Dont take any risk!" to Very Attacking as "Go forth my players, Take EVERY SINGLE risk!"
That's how's I understood it as well. Which means that you would actually use cautious mentality if you wanted to recreate a Pep team, even vs much inferior opposition.
The best description of mentality I ever heard was during a forum conversation in FM16, where I was discussing a defensive 4-4-2 I'd created that had wonderful attacking movement and flair (and was the first 'defensive' tactic I'd ever created even though I've played since CM01/02). Mentality was described as a risk assessment based on how adventurous your players would be within their role on the pitch, which when combined with tempo changes (which we know is all about how fast your team wants to get to the opposition box) can be used to control how safely you want your team to play. Anyway, great videos!
On FM20 one of my favourite tactics has been a "defensive" direct narrow 433 with 3 strikers. It is highly aggressive despite the mentality (which is set to keep the other players back while the forwards handle scoring). Player position and roles matter as much as mentality in how attacking your tactic really is.
I'm surprised someone else has had this experience !! Using this formation at Leipzig I rolled over the league and got to the final of the CL in the first year (got a fairly easy run tbf)
I generally put my mentality as positive to start the game because i like to have teams that are good in possession. But if i’m losing the possession battle significantly, i will change to cautious and try to counter. If i’m dominating a game possession wise but not getting many chances, i will switch to attacking mentality. I never go balanced, because i like to have a game plan not just feel out the opponent. It’s better to fail trying to be positive than fail being balanced. Like i said, if it’s obvious positive isn’t working, you can always just go cautious, but if the risk is working, you have the opponent pinned back in their half most of the game.
@@IxCoLTzxI i meant, sorry my bad emg, you can with very attacking score goals. if you losing 0-1 or 0-2 with very attacking and fast tempo you can win that match 2-1 or 3-2. i have been using very attacking even in champions league big game where i losing and get that tie or win vs bigger team than me. is all about the moment. you know at 60 or 70 minutes you tell them you want more, and put very attacking and fastest tempo and they will play alot more .
In 2020 Almost every tactic I play is positive with all on support. Worked great for me. With positive a focus more on players role and so far I had great success
Bro I don't even play fm and I watch these videos bc they are entertaining and amazing. Other vids like this are just boring dry low quality boring voices.
I know I'm a year behind but this was a really informative video! In my first proper save I went cautious on my main tactic vs a far superior RB Leipzig team (Europa League group stages) and we somehow won 3-2 away - 2 counter-attack goals and one from the set piece despite being the worse team. Love your more analytical videos, it's making me a far better player
I've actually started using the bland roles (CM, WMF, FB, AMF) way more. They allow all the different setting to be fiddled with so you can really tailor a role to a players strength. That way you can force that Advanced playmaker of yours with a high Long shots score to actually try a shot every now and then. Also Inverted Wingbacks is my new obsession. Love experimenting with a 3 man midfield (2 CMF, 1 DMF) where the two CMFs are set on attacking duties and two inverted wingbacks take their space while they go for goal. You need pretty good wingers since the backpass home from the wing gets harder when the Windback stays inside, but it really allows you to send more people forward through the middle without sacrificing your wings. Another one Ive been trying is 4-1-4-1 with low wingers. The 4 in the middle line all set on attacking, a sitting DMF behind, a Deep lying forward on support up top and 2 inverted wingbacks taking the space in the middle on support.
FM mobile is more simple and not as muddy as the PC : defensive, contain, counter, balance, control, attacking, overload. Defensive: more on safePlay, play more positioning on the lower third, doesnt care bout ball posession. Contain: ball posession with more cautious passing, defense mentality (great for wasting time). Balance: switch the focus between attacking to defensing, vice Versa. Control: ball posession based, attacking mentality. Attacking: more vertical positioning, taking more risks to score, less ball posession as "control" mentality. Overload: ultra vertical attacking, tries to out number the opponents in the final third.
For me very attacking does work, I think it is in part because I deploy it earlier then other people do. Opposing team purely defending and succeeding? Very attacking sometimes even in first half. One /2 goals down with 20 minutes to go? Very attacking. You have to give it time to have enough dice rolls so to speak for one to fall your way. Against the first example once you have that first goal you can tone back again as now you have forced the opposition to attack more and give you space.
Great video, thanks Zealand! Love it when you actually try and back up the things you are saying with articles and other stuff. The problem I usually have when you make statements about soft factors like mentality etc. is "How does he actually know?" It would be awesome if you could back up up what you say with SI quotes and fan articles even more or at least tell us about your specific experiences. You are already going in the right direction, feel free to kick it up a notch
Zealand, one thing that's bothering me right now is when a player's traits are conflicting with their role instructions. Do you mind researching how that interaction works? If my Winger has the trait "cuts inside from the left" and his role says "runs with the ball down the left", what happens? Will he ignore the role instructions? Will he do both? Will his Decision score take a hit or something?
I'd say how good his decision making and teamwork ratings are will help decide what he does. For example, igf he has high decisions, he will probably do the thing most likely to work in that passage of play. If he has poor teamwork rating, he will do what he is inclined to do anyway; ie: cut inside from your example.

If you put the mentality on very attacking but you set-up your lines lower (or vice-versa), the overall effect on the team´s play is null.
Actually changing mentalities its just a quick way to play rather than moving players positions or changing instructions..if you have a right back atacking is primary goal is to defend and then go atack when in possesion if your in ultra he is no longer going to be a right back he is going to be more of a wing back etx..but it prevents you from losing time changing positions..obviously this is just if you want a fast gameplay of fm..
Great video. It really blew my mind. I like to play patient football with a lot of possession. So what if I'm the better team but I want to keep like 70% possession so I want to keep a lower tempo. From your video, I think the message is sacrifice a little bit of possession and go for positive or attacking, right?
I almost always play balanced all the time and it's very successful. I only change if I'm losing or drawing and time is running out. My tactics do lots of things that shouldn't work but do.
I play retain possession, work the ball into the box, very short passes, very high tempo and run with the ball often. Crazy, I know. But it works. I've got to these tactic by trial and error, adjusting the tactic to whatever is successful most often.
Can you make a video of how to get out of a losing streak? Because I quit FM alot because of a poor form. When making a new save I always start great but I suddenly can't win for like 5 to 10 games. I am tired of using much time to make a tactic which only works for 10 games.

I love ur videos man, I have a question actually over the course of all my fm games (playing since 07) for some reason alot of times in cup competitions I draw a team which I have a game against in the week I play that same team in the league. Is this just the FM algorithm?

I have never been able to have any real success playing on any mentality other than Positive/Attacking. Even on Cautious, I still concede as many goals, but just can't score any
if you play cautious, you need fast attackers and a deep playmaker. Having strikers who run into channels and a playmaker who plays long balls helps as well. Also, set your lines to be compact, low line on offense but normal on defense. That will help with the defense and give more space to play long balls on the counter

Thanks for your feedback Joel, I can see what you mean. Feedback has been noted & I hope you still enjoyed the video!
I beg to differ, I created a mourinho style tactic using very defensive and won the league scoring a lot of goals
You're a mad man
@@ZealandonYT I like to create tactics that shouldn't work... I've done plenty with 0,1 and 2 defenders, others with 8 players on the wings and many other stupid sounding formations lol. I find the game easy so I like to make it challenging 😝
actually very attacking and attacking are the only 2 options work well in FM
you can barely win matches with defensive option against stronger team................................................
I play balanced at home and defensive away. All but 1 save I dominate results wise. Always felt too exposed on anything more positive
lol I won everything playing balanced most of the time xD
Babe wake up new Zealand video
i lost 3 matches to Liverpool (I'm playing as manutd) i tried to change my mentality and it didn't work as I was using very attacking hope I can beat them next time
Zealand, what's the intro song called?
Oh, thank god. Having seen the thumbnail, I thought Zealand had gone incredibly racist for a second.
Do you think your shipping would be available for people in the UK?
Of course my guy
@@ZealandonYT count me in then:D

For anyone who didn't know, what did you think it meant?
CK3 and 2 are good games.
Thats, it... gotta make San Marino beat Spain in a save!
I’ve scored two goals on very defensive lol
Is it possible to play as a real manager? Lets say I want to manage Inter, but I want to do it as conte?
If you name yourself yes
@@gokhulmanikandan7689 ?
Can I ask where are you from?
He was born in Tampa, Florida
very attacking, aka give the ball away then concede lots of set pieces and fail to get out your own half, then lose.
I am pee man, I have come to bless this video with the pee.
"when you have an attacking doodie"
All you need is to read in the game, but players don't!
