A little tip, it takes about 45 mins for the ceramic pot to heat up to cooking temperature. You can save energy and time by preheating the pot in the microwave. I put about a tablespoon of water in the pot, cover with cling film and stick it in the microwave for about 3 to 4 minutes. The steam created pre-heats the pot before cooking. I normally switch the slow cooker on with the lid on (while the crock pot is heating in the microwave) it's ok, it's safe to do this. If you had pre heated the milk in the microwave before cooking your rice, this would have also cut down the cooking time I've been using a slow cooker two of three times a week for about ten years and found loads of shortcuts. I use the frozen root veg casserole mix from asda and de-frost that and heat that in the microwave in a covered dish with some water(some times with a stock cube in the water if I'm making a casserole). Anything co;d that goes in the crockpot increases the cooking time. Just my two penneth, hope this helps. .
Thanks Maria. Another way to improve the efficiency of the slow cooker is to make a surround out of corrugated cardboard tied on with string. I do my sunday roast in the slow cooker ( no water) comes out lovely and tender. If its pork or chicken I finish in the air fryer to crisp the skin.To crisp up the soggy crackling, remove when cooked. place on a plate, oil it,salt it and loosely cover with kitchen roll and stick it in the microwave( the kitchen roll absorbs the moisture) 5mins. keep an eye on it though as it can baurn or stick to the plate.
Hi Maria! I made my rice pudding in my pressure cooker and it was like the slow cooker! Really creamy, but I missed the skin! I found a solution! I took a portion out enough for myself, put it in a heatproof bowl. Poured over a little extra milk and sprinkled nutmeg on top (if you like nutmeg) and I put in the airfryer until the skin formed and it went. brown. It was delicious!!! Your Dean will love it! 👌
Hello, that looked so good, that I thought tonight I would make one, it turned out perfect, thank you so much for sharing, waiting for tomorrow’s pudding now, might have one again for tea tomorrow!!!!! Xx🥣🥣🥣
It turned out so tasty. I've never done one in the slow cooker before so I wasn't sure how it would go. I think my husband is looking forward to the next one too, he's going to be sad when the rice pudding challenge is over 😂 Thank you for watching.
Hi Maria,i think the experiment was a success with the slow cooker. You don't need to put a cloth on the top. As I got the bigger slow cooker, i also got the aluminium dish in case i wanted to sear meat and also it's not as heavy as the ceramic dish. I'm not bothered about the skin either. I usually do about 6 ozs of rice, sugar extra milk and a tin of carnation so i can freeze some. I do it at least 4 hours on low, and i stir it every hour, i also put a job of butter in. Also it's so much easier to clean than doing it in the oven. Looking forward to seeing the results from the air fryer. I think Dean will be looking forward to it too. Lol
It's interesting making the same thing in different appliances. I like the slow cooker because there's no skin on the Pudding, although I don't dislike the skin I prefer it without. My smart meter never went on red so I'm happy with that. 😊

These are some great ideas! Thank you.
I'll pin your comment as these tips may be useful to others too.

That's a good idea if you like the skin. Dean would most definitely like it!
Thanks Maria, enjoying the experiment. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. I think my husband is enjoying the experiment too! 😂

Your rice pudding sounds lovely.
I think Dean will be sad when this challenge is over, he's enjoyed it too much! 😂
Thanks for this experiment.
It might take longer in a slow cooker, it’s very cost effective, as it only uses the amount of electric as a lightbulb.
