  • Dozens of killer whales in California’s Monterey Bay were observed last week in an unusual attack on two adult gray whales, video shows.
Researchers and guests on March 30 witnessed “five hours of an attack by over two dozen Bigg's killer whales on two adult gray whales,” tour agency Monterey Bay Whale Watch said.
Bigg’s orcas, formerly known as West Coast Transient orcas, are a subtype described by killer whale researcher Michael Bigg, which feed exclusively on marine mammals and tend to travel in smaller groups than so-called resident orcas.
“Usually killer whales will hunt gray whale calves as they head up to their northern feeding areas with their moms. But these were not calves: they were huge adult gray whales,” Monterey Bay Whale Watch said.
Videos shared by the tour agency show multiple orca pods joining together for the relentless attack. “We were able to observe the unique hunting strategies of the pods and the rarely seen defensive strategies of the two Grays,” the agency said.
“The battered gray whales eventually made it to shallow water, and the orcas broke off,” the agency said.
The agency said that in more than 30 years of documenting encounters for the California Killer Whale Project, this was the first observed attack on adult gray whales in Monterey Bay.

It's a video from Monterey Bay. 23 killers vs 2 adults. After 5 hours the Greys got away. Pretty amazing.

It looked like the killer whales were targeting mostly the gray on the left maybe because it was not as big as the one on the right. The grays seemed more concerned that they kept their rostrums close together in the front as a defensive tactic and then the rolling over so that the killer whales won't ram the gray in the same spot on their sides. Awesome footage..!!

The grey whale on the right may have been the mother. One of Orca’s tactics is to try and separate a calf from its mother, as they also do with humpback whales.

@@S0ulinth3machin3the reason seems to be because they lose their mobility advantage, they’re no longer able to attack from all sides including below. Instead they’re stuck attacking the front where the whale could headbutt them or the back end which would be a death wish getting smacked by those huge tails. I know of a case where a mother gray managed to strike an orca with her tail in a similar ordeal (:

For example, alligators should be slaughtered at a certain age to make shoes, belts, purses, and so on. Others carnivorous like hyenas, etc. that you can't make a profit, feed them to the sharks whales so humans can eat more tuna. Perhaps, the rest, we can't keep them for the future when food will be scarce in the whole world. It will be a delicacy for those who cannot live w/o meat.

Was thinking of the Blue Whales and the recent successful killing of them. This was an old prey for them. But since their numbers of the Blue Whale have increased, they've gone back after them. Personally I think all aquatic life is threatened with the steady pollution of the oceans.

Do you know that humans almost killed off all the Gray whales, Blue whales & others? Their numbers are finally climbing back up because whale hunting is very limited (I think only indigenous groups are allowed a very limited catch these days). If the Orcas left the oceans empty, then they’d die out too.

    • @S0ulinth3machin3

that is incorrect. Orca populations have been steady (globally) for a long time.
