This is a hard one for me. I was lying in bed playing this for my husband. I listened to the song and suddenly felt all alone. Then I realized after the songs was finished, he had stopped breathing. It was a long battle with rectal cancer. The loneliness was just overwhelming.
What a lovely gift you gave him as he passed - beautiful music and your presence. I wish you the very best, as I'm sure he wanted for you.
Praying for you
Thank you for sharing Rhiahl and for being here with all of us. We are all here, together, in this warm space that our Rob Squad created to share good music and all the sentiments attached to each song. Times like these help heal us all. 🙏🏿
Very belated hugs
Wow…I’m so sorry for your loss…😢
This song is perfection. He was taken from the world much much too soon.
I absolutely agree that the world lost an amazing singer songwriter. I shared a room with my sister growing up. who was 10 years older than my 4 yrs. I still love him today. It’s hard to pick a fav Jc song but I love Is “It doesn’t have to be that way. “You have to do this tt has a bit of a Xmas touch. 💜
One of the greatest songwriters of all-time
Him and Harry Chapin.
He's still here with us in his music. 😇
@@musicaddict5076 you got that straight. Both of those artists I grew up listening to
In almost all of his songs the guitar parts were played by both Jim and his musical partner Maury Muehleisen. Maury doesn't get mentioned as much because Jim was the lead singer and songwriter ... but Maury's guitar playing is sublime and a perfect pairing with Jim. Maury died in the same plane crash as Jim - this musical duo was an incredible loss to the world..
Maury had a sound that I've never heard from anyone else. He was a master guitarist that could evoke emotions that fit the songs perfectly.
AND?? he was payed to do a job
@@garyowens3698 AND they had a pretty cool musical relationship .. even before they recorded Croce's albums Croce played 2nd guitar at Muehleisens gigs .. these gigs are what got Croce back into the music scene/industry and greatly influenced Croce's songwriting ..
WTF is your point? What a asshole. If you die in an accident your job I hope no one feels bad for you or your family
Finally someone giving Maury the respect he deserves
"If I had a box just for wishes, and dreams that had never come true. The box would be empty except for the memory of how they were answered by you." Brilliant!
“Operator” is his masterpiece.
He was on the road as a touring musician most of the time. He only found commercial success near the end of his career. He had gotten to a point where he wanted to focus more on his wife and son. He was planning to limit his touring schedule. The plane crash came as he was winding down his last tour. I can’t imagine being his wife and hearing these lyrics on every radio. He finally found what he wanted to do but didn’t have enough time to do those things. A chilling song.
I agree 😊 Operator makes me teary still, all these years later. RIP Jim.
His last concert was a make-up date that he had to cancel. Between the original date, and the new date, he was playing bigger venues due to his growing fame, yet he honored the original commitment.
Yes! Put in on the list. If your hearts ever been broken but you got better...
Yes, "Operator" is his best sweet story song.
most definitely, you have to do Operator....it's such a heartfelt, beautiful song!!!
My dad told me when I was a kid that Jim sat down and wrote this song the night his wife let him know he'd be a dad soon. Sadly, he died just a few years after his son was born. My dad always said it was like Jim knew he wouldn't be around for his son, so he wrote this song to tell him how much he wishes he would be there. Such a beautiful song about a parent's love! ❤
Sadly, AJ Croce, Jim's son, lost his sight as a toddler due to horrific physical abuse by a man his mother was dating. He was hospitalized for an extended period of time - eventually he regained vision in one eye. He's is a musician and performer just like his dad.
I think AJ has some very good songs. He also sings his father's songs. He struggled with this one due to its meaning and the heartbreaking events in his family.
This is a little video about Time In A Bottle: m.ua-cam.com/video/WNPbavw50T8/v-deo.html
His story, and his son's is so tragic.
@@marian.jablonski54 I read that his wife died as well leaving him to raise their young children?
Jim had a son who is now doing concerts. The title of his show is “Croce plays Croce,” honoring his father’s music.
Just saw that show the other night. It was fabulous.
What a great son
"Photographs and Memories", "Operator" and "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" are also great songs of Jim's softer side. He crammed a lifetime's worth of songs in just a way too few years. Glad you are giving him a listen and exposing new generations to his incredible talents. Great job!
There was also "Lover's Cross" iirc.
Those are three of his best. He never had a bad song though. Can you imagine what he would have brought to us if he had lived longer? What a talent!!
To me, this is Jim's best song. A timeless classic. A very heartfelt, authentic, and romantic tribute.
I think his song "Operator" should be next. 😊
I think Operator is best and this is 2nd!
That song will make me crywhem I listen to his voice and emotions! Plus his song, I Got A Name. Classic stuff! Don't miss it!
I third " Operator"!
Agreed.
I would not say "romantic", as he wrote it for his first kid when his wife became pregnant.
Jim Croce was a great singer/ songwriter. He died tragically at an early age in a plane crash. His best hits include:
This one, "I Got A Name", "Operator", Don't Mess Around With Jim","Bad,Bad, Leroy Brown",",Photographs And Memories", "One Less Set Of Footsteps" and "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song"
Operator is my personal favorite.
My personal favorite is 'I Got A Name"
All of them!!! Does he even have a bad song?
We used three songs for my father's memorial video and "Time in a Bottle" was used for the photos of him enjoying time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. It's such a beautiful song; both tune and lyrics.
One less set of foot steps gets my vote
We had this song at our wedding in 1981 we were married almost 37 years and my husband passed in 2018 just two months short of our 37th anniversary. Today hearing this brought tears to my eyes.
My sister used this song as her daddy daughter dance in 2005. We grew up on this music, and to this day, Jim Croce is one of my favorites
I too was married in '81, and this was played at our wedding also. I still have my husband and can't imagine going through time with anyone else. God bless you and comfort you.
@@julien.4617 thank for your kind words Julie.
😢😢
I am so sorry for your loss.
"If I had a box just for wishes and dreams that had NEVER come true. The box would be empty except, for the memory of how they(the dreams) were answered by you". This is my favorite Jim Croce line of all his songs.
Jay, don't think we didn't see you stealing looks at Amber at certain points in the song and we can see on your face just how blessed you know you are. You two are a blessing to us fans to share so much with us. Thank you.
OH MAN! This really does it to me. I Love Jim Croce. Was a huge fan in High school. Really devastated when he died.
This one is really special to me. I take it as a life lesson. "Don't let time go by unnoticed. It's NEVER coming back."
Especially with your kids. There are no unimportant days.
Truer words were never spoken. Well said.
I absolutely adored Jim Croce and cried my heart out when I learned he had died (on my birthday, so I have an annual reminder.)
This song hits me on a personal level My dad finally got close with me when I turned 18. He died of a heart attack at 49. This song was playing in the ER when the Dr. came out and said I'm terribly 😞 sorry. Very hard for me to listen.
It's a song that ranks amongst the greatest songs ever written.
Absolutely beautiful. My fave from Jim is "I GOT A NAME". It makes you feel proud of the people you come from. Love "OPERATOR" as well. My Mom still to this day has a hard time listening to this song ("TIME IN A BOTTLE"). Jim died in a plane crash and at that time her favorite cousin died in a plane crash. This song and Stevie Wonder 's "YOU ARE THE SUNSHINE OF MY LIFE" she would actually change the radio station.....the power of music.
Jim didn't write "I Got A Name," but said that he wished he had. It fits so well with the rest of his work.
Love "I Got a Name",
When my husband of 37 years passed away four years ago it took a couple years before I could listen to this song again. Even now it can make me cry. Another song I love of his is Photographs and Memories. He was a very talented man who left us way too soon.
I wish "Photographs and Memories" were five times longer than what it is! Way too beautiful to be way too short!
@@johnbattles1002 I agree!
The most beautiful song he wrote. I saw his son AJ in a concert at our local Community College. He is incredible on the piano, and he ended the show by singing this song. Jim Croce has so many hit songs, and surprisingly they were all released within 8 months before he died. There's no telling how much more he could have done if he had lived. AJ's stepfather was abusive to him and blinded him at 4 years old. He regained partial sight in one eye.
Incredibly sad story about AJ.
Dude he may have been abused but losing his eyesight was due to a brain tumor. I have tried to find reference to his step father being abusive and can't find it. Can you send me the website that speaks on that?
@@Teresia12 wikipedia's article mentions it. So does his own website, ajcrocemusic. Lots of articles and interviews mention it.
This guy took me through my transition from high school to college, then he passed. He'll always be a special musician for me.
As a picker myself, a classical Spanish guitar arrangement played correctly is hypnotic. And this song does it correctly.
In the 70's, the expression of love in lyrics was at it's highest point.
Music was at its highest point in the 70s.
My wife of 36 years was dieing of cancer, and she loved Jim, this is the song she wanted to dance with me one last time, she died 4 days later,
On September 20, 1973, at the height of his popularity and the day before the lead single to his fifth album I Got a Name was released, Croce and five others died in a plane crash. His music continued to chart throughout the 1970s following his death. My Mom bought tickets to the concert that we never got to go to , she woke that morning and heard it on the news I was 13 at the time getting ready for school when she told me . As an early student of the guitar I was crushed by the death of a man with so much talent , later in life I was again moved when I found out all the backstory a true working class Joe he was .
Times have changed so much since the 70's and information was not so freely shared living in a small town I had no idea he died that early in the 70's. His songs were always on the radio, like he was still alive.. Thank you for sharing your story
Jim Croce is one of my favorite singers of all time. All story songs.
"One Less Set of Footsteps" is a very underrated song with great lyrics by Jim Croce 👍
He wrote this song for his unborn son when his wife told him that she was pregnant. One of the most beautiful songs ever.
A pure love song. ❤❤❤
I was a huge, huge, huge Jim Croce fan in High School 50 years ago and I wore out the tape listening to this particular song most of all. He wrote it specifically for his son, who is also a musician now, too. He wasn't able to perform this song, though, as it affected him just too much. Finally, when he had children himself he finally decided to do the song as a tribute to his dad, and for his child...
Edit: His song "Operator" is fantastic too!
Imagine finding you here. How are you?
@@janicetrimmell6897 - Hi. I'm doing okay, thanks. How about you?
This is a sweet tender ballad filled with Jim's magical voice. He wrote this song after his wife told him she was pregnant.
This was his 2nd and final number 1. Just a great storyteller, with beautiful guitar presentation. Such a loss in a plane crash. 😥😥
This was the 3rd posthumous Number 1 hit on Billboard, along with Otis Redding, "Sitting On The Dock of the Bay" and Janis Joplin "Me and Bobby Mcgee".
Next, "Operator" Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦
My brother was KIA in South Viet Nam, July 1969...
He loved “Sittin On the Dock of the Bay...” and every time I hear it, I have to sit down... I feel like my legs are going to give out...just like they did when my mom called to tell me my little brother was dead...💔
@@corinnepmorrison1854 So sorry for your loss. I lost my only brother 8 years ago on Boxing Day. Everytime I hear Luke Bryan's " Drink a Beer", I go back to that day. The first song I heard after knowing he was gone. 😥😥👍✌️🤗🇨🇦
@@marybaillie8907
I’m sorry for your loss as well, Mary...
💔
I think about my brother EVERY DAY...
My husband and I were expecting our first child...and my brother knew he was going to be an uncle... My son was born 29 days after my brother was killed... I know my brother and son would have had a great relationship...❤️
That very last, jarring chord strikes me right in the gut every time when you realize that he never did get to go through time with those he loved. It’s the most bittersweet moment in the history of pop music, hands down.
This song reminds me off my big bro, my only brother, who died two years ago. I thought we'd get to be two grumpy old bachelors together. All the men in my life that I grew up with are gone now and the memories we made are on loop in my mind with no one to relive those great memories with. Truly if I could have time in a bottle. The world truly lost a lot when Jim died but I am so grateful for the music he did leave behind! ♥️
I became a huge Jim Croce fan at a VERY young age and his passing (when I was 9) was my first time dealing with death. I was crushed to the point that I couldn't listen to his music for a long time afterwards. He was an amazing songwriter and lyricist, with a beautifully haunting voice. RIP Mister Croce.
Yes sir i was 5 :)
R.I.P Jim Croce gone too soon 😢 brings back so many wonderful memories 😊🎶😊 thanks y'all as again 💜
One of The most poetically, beautiful songs ever written....
This is a song l heard back when l was very young.... I cried.... I still cry every time I hear it now
Songs like this make me glad I grew up in a time period when people were more sensitive, especially in relationships. Our personalities coincide with our music, which unfortunately, is also true with today's music (generally speaking). Your next song from Jim Croce has to be "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song."
Love this song - we had it played at our wedding. The song wasn't intended to be a single, but the album track got a lot of airplay, given that the album was release posthumously, a few months after Jim's death at age 30. It really gives the lyrics about never having "enough time to do the things you want to do once you find them" a deeper meaning when you know about his untimely death. Thanks for this one!
We had it performed at my mother in law's funeral. Not a dry eye in the house.
You have a great last name. lol
Jim Croce was one of a kind. I still listen to him all of the time.
The few times that the bells come in add such a sadness to the sound. One of the most beautiful love songs ever❤️
"I Got a Name" is a great song by him! ❤️
Jim Croce left the world far too soon. Such an amazingly talented singer/songwriter/guitarist. It warms my heart that young people are still discovering and appreciating his music.
His “I’ll have to say I love you in a song” and “Operator” are my favorites. It’s so nice to see young people reacting to music that I loved as a kid. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I literally wore a black arm band to school the day after I heard he had died. His music spoke to my soul and his loss was deeply felt by this Alabama girl. I love his song “Alabama Rain”. I can’t think of a single song of his that disappoints! Love him ❤
One of the great story teller/ songwriters of the era, on par with Lightfoot and Dylan
Personally I think his song called long time ago might be one of the prettiest songs I've ever heard you also need to check out a song called operator a lot of the guitar work was by his backup man his name was Maury mulehisen he died in the plane crash with Jim but Maury was the one that did all the lead work obviously Jim was an expert guitar player too but Maury did the hard stuff
Jim Croce is one of the best songwriters to have ever walked the earth. His music and melodies transcend.
Wow such a great song. I was seven years old when this was released. It’s taken on more meaning and importance then I ever knew as a child
This is an example of a truly timeless song; if you travelled back in time 1500 years and sang and played this song just as it was recorded, everybody who heard it would understand it perfectly.
The older I get, the more the song breaks me. I have been married for 40 years to an amazing woman and I can't help think about the limited amount of time we have left together.
Operator is a great song and, along with this song, shows what a talented songwriter he was.
I had this played at my moms funeral. We had always said if we could save or make more time wed have more time together. She was my best friend!
My favorite Croce songs are "Photographs and Memories" and "Lover's Cross"
This was more of who Jim Croce was. The lead guitar is Maury Muehleisen, a young musician he spent he last years recording and touring with. Muehleisen was killed in the same plane crash with Croce. Croce's son Adrian is also a recording artist and was just two years old when his father died.
thank you for remembering Maury~
This song was just played at my dad's funeral. He always said he wanted it to be. I miss and love him so much!
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
I think you guys would also love Cats in the Cradle and Taxi. Two amazing songs by another singer that we lost too soon, Harry Chapin.
Jim Croce, Harry Chapin and Carole King were my favorite singer-songwriters of that era
“Photographs and memories” another Beautiful Croce song
This is my favourite song by Jim Croce
:) What a beautiful song. Thanks to whoever suggested it.
Too many sad songs on a day when I had to go to a funeral. BUT, I do love them-especially this one. Achingly, hauntingly beautiful. I love his soft songs- he’s voice is gorgeous!
I heard his Photographs and Memories this morning- you’ll love that one. Always try I’ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song
I can not love his work enough. Several amazing songs. One Less Set of Footsteps is phe-nom-enally evocative. What a loss. Sooo many wonderful songs.
Jim considered himself a musical psychologist. He was alternately rough 'n' tumble, then sweet, everyone's big brother.
Beautiful song 🎵
Songfacts®: Jim Croce wrote this reflective song the night that he found out his wife, Ingrid, was pregnant. The couple had been married for five years, and Ingrid found out she was pregnant when she went to a fertility specialist. She recalls a mix of terror and delight in Jim's reaction when she told him the news.
A really beautiful song that's all the more emotional for the fact that Jim's life was cut so short. Thanks for reacting to this.
One of the most beautiful songs ever. I love it so much.
Thank you for revisiting Jim Croce's music! I really hope you can listen to some more of his songs. So far, you have barely scratched the surface of his talent. My favorites include the fantastic " I got a name." "Photographs and Memories," "New York's not my Home," and "I'll Have To Say I Love You In a Song". Jim Croce recorded "I Got A Name," right before he tragically died in a plane crash. It was his last song released and didn't get released until after his death, which makes it all the more impactful, IMHO.
One of the most beautifully romantic songs in history. Simply exquisite.
I can’t get over💞💓💖
This song is actually SOOOO good!! 😍🤩🥰
Photographs and Memories is so beautiful. I tear up every time I hear it.
My mom loved Jim Croce. This was her favorite song. It always makes me think of her.
One of the best songs of all time! Check out a live version of this song, Jay, and you can see the two acoustic-guitar parts played together.
I Got A Name is my favorite Croce song! You can't not sing along with it, and it hits you right in your your soul with a smile.
"Operator (That's Not The Way It Feels)" is a must! I think it's my favorite Jim Croce song.
Operator (Thats Not The Way It Feels) next please 🙏🏼
Another good at Jim Croce song Is I got a name
I've Got A Name, Photographs and Memories, I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song, Operator... So many great Jim Croce songs!
Jim came out with this song when I was young. Brings tears to m eyes still.
Time In A Bottle....a timeless beauty of emotion and musicianship.
This man left us way to young. Every song is a winner.
My favorite Jim Croce song. It always reminds me of Christmas - I seem to remember it being played on the radio around Christmas time every year.
Love Jim Croce ❤️ songs, they all beautiful.
Love me some Jim. Operator, I’ve Got A Name, New York’s Not My Home. As others have said, he died right as he was becoming known so there isn’t a huge amount of tracks of his. However, of the few songs he released, almost all of them are worthy of review. He’s just that good.
Thank you for getting back to one of the great storytellers, Jim Croce. But you're killing me...get to his very best song, already -- 'Operator.' :)
Also, to get back to his fun side, 'Working at the Car Wash Blues.'
This was Our song we had at our wedding 48 years ago. I had an illumination made of the lyrics - still hanging on Our bedroom wall.
Enjoyed your very positive vibes.
One of the most beautiful love songs written in it simplicity. ❤️
The thing about Jim Croce...he has range...you can't help but feel emotion when listening to his songs...he wants you to laugh...you laugh...he wants you to cry...you cry. Two under the radar songs by him..."Roller Derby Queen" and "Working at the Car Wash Blues" will always put a smile on your face.
My mom passed in 2020. This song would make her cry. We had her fir 77 years and were so blessed. I love Jim Croce.
“I Got a Name” is a great song and a heartbreaker in its context. He died the night before its scheduled release.
This is my favorite love song, it's a classic.
Such an amazing song! Thank you for this reaction!!! Love your channel! Would love to see you guys do more from Jim!
Jim left us too soon...he was a great talent...
He does have a sweet sweet voice…. hated to see him go! Unfortunately he was involved in a horrible plane crash! Gone to soon! The song was written for his wife! We all loved this song even more because he died right after the song was a big hit!
@@sheilameyers152 If the company who chartered the plane to Jim and his entourage had provided a competent pilot, they'd all probably still be with us today...
Tears flow everytime I hear this. Want it played at my funeral.
"Operator" is one of the most emational songs ever written. It's a masterpiece.
Jim Croce (Crow-Chee) is a master of storytelling. He's really easy to listen to and I like how his songs connect with the listener so well. Few songs: "Lover's Cross" "I Got A Name" "Roller Derby Queen" "Alabama Rain" "New York's Not My Home" "Photographs And Memories" "Walkin' Back To Georgia" and "Hey Tomorrow." Enjoy!
Great song. For the next Jim Croce song for you to react to, check out "I'll have To Say I Love You In A Song."
Always tears with this and Operator
Photographs and Memories is another ofJim's treasures.... It's almost as if he knew his life was going to be short... lost too soon...
