Have Manchester United Run Out of Money?

- This summer, a lot of Manchester United fans are frustrated by the lack of transfer activity at Old Trafford, meanwhile plenty of rival fans have long looked on and wondered how Man Utd are able to maintain such enormous spending on players and wages given their lack of recent success.
Following my videos looking at the financial situations at Liverpool and Chelsea, a number of you asked me to take a deep dive into Manchester United's finances.
So in this video, HITC Sevens delves deep into the Manchester United accounts, comparing their financial outlook to other teams in the Premier League and Champions League, their ownership situation with the Glazer's, and the overall health of the club. - Спорт

Glazer bro 2: Where do we get the funding?
Glazer bro 1: Manchester United
It's like buying the world and using the world as a collateral
I heard they also own own the Tampa bay Buccaneers (NFL team)
Standard finance practice, unfortunately
It's like buying a house.
@@Ceaseless_Watcher Except the house doesnt pay the morgage each month.
It’s called a leveraged buyout and is common in business. Glazers are businessmen and man united has been a good return for them.
People are passionate about their clubs which brings an expectation that owners should just dump countless of their own money into the clubs with no return. I can understand why people don’t like it but I can see the business sense in what they are doing. Glazers will sell Manchester United to some Arab or East Asian oligarchs for a billion or so and make a massive roi soon I’m thinking.
There is a double edged sword at Man United
1) Spending only happens when there is no champions league football. Once United make some progress and champions league revenue comes in the pause button is hit( like what happened to Jose). This means United go backwards again and cycle continues
2) When we do spend we get completely ripped off and pay ridiculous transfer fees and wages to average players.
arc7878 because wood wood is not a football guy he is business man first
Agree on the second point, it feels like as soon as man utd are interested the price tag goes to 60m minimum. Trouble is people only want to play for us for the money these days since were struggling performance wise - hence us getting ripped off and not being able to invest in the squad well
Sometimes they wasted a lot money on transfers when they sold big players like Lukaku
Alexis Sanchez
420fedoras It’s the United tax. We’ve always been ripped off when it comes to signing players.
To those who ask for new videos. Before you ask for new video ideas. Why don't you say thanks for the video you just watched.

short answer: Glazers
long answer: still the Glazers
The Glazers and Woodward make it so difficult to be a united fan. I hate the fact we are a business first and a football club second.
Arsenal fans must think the same... I'm sorry for you both. It's true that it's a shame
But as basketball's fan too, I'm way more sad for New York Knicks' fan ^^'
That’s how all football clubs are. It’s a business just like all sports are. Sports is business.
Vince Salamander I’m a knicks and man united fan
Matt Hofmann damn bro pick a struggle
Difficult? You play champions league football later this season, get a grip. Man united aren’t entitled to success

"The tool that every Liverpool fan is equipped with from birth, before taking their first steps into the world of social media."
I LOL-ed.
it's too true lol
I'm a liverpool fan and this made me laugh
I also laughed at this, but have to admit this is probably more of a recent phenomenon. After years of stumbling around the mid-top half of the table, I feel Liverpool want to prove that they can reestablish themselves as domestic and European contenders without being perceived as "villains" like many people do with the likes of City and Chelsea. Net spend is a valid point (amongst many) because it demonstrates that their wages and transfers are more self-supporting (an FSG tenet), but it often comes across as a "holier than thou" attitude.
Makes a joke taking a pop at Liverpool fans, yet uses it as one of the key points of his breakdown of man utd's finances...
Saying that Liverpool fans bang on about it is neither here nor there (maybe they do that because people keep denying it as relevant??)
It's a fact of football finances, as this video points out...
@@LKeet6 Exactly right. It only ever needs saying by Liverpool fans because we're a naturally aspirated club competing with the likes of City and Chelsea, whose fans disingenuously like to point out transfers such as VVD and Alison as us somehow splashing the cash without accepting they were paid for by the sale of our best player at the time, Coutinho. It's been like that since the money really went silly 20 years ago. The problem with football debate is that nobody is ever trying to be fair; it's always partisan. Sometimes, that's just unhelpful and irritating.
This is like an accounting class but actually interesting, thanks Alfie.

Lolollollollol. I think there doing us a favour. So funny, fishy, no ground matches but still making revenue ???? 🌞 If your going to be a liar be a good one. Its amazing how facinating it is but i am pissed 😁.
Forget Liverpool, Man City, Barcelona or Real Madrid.... Man United need to beat Glazers first to competes for throphies...
Without the glazers there would be no football club. Just a car park for the City fans

After watching this now i feel like crying. The glazers and woodward are great businessmans who used United to earn money for themselves in whatever way possible. Hence, they dont care how the club performs on the pitch as long as they make money.
Feel sad that we are forced to watch this happen. Omg.
All this showed me is how vulnerable Arsenal are to slipping to mid table with our current ownership structure and how dependent we are on match day revenue 💔

13:15 - 14:01 Was beautifully presented. I clapped alone in my room. "In a literal sense"
Nothing left to say. Wonderful video and presentation.
Tne problem is (and not just with this video but on the whole Glazer discussion in general) is they pick headline figures without context. Out of context it seems awful but in context less so. For example you will hear figures like £1.5bn thrown around but a massive chunk of that figure are 'paper expenses' rather than cash expenses. They cost absolutely nothing cash wise but are a deduction on the accounts, this then creates a tax shield that actually saves the club cash. And while they have started paying dividends now the interests rates are pretty low for a long time even those were saving actual cash. Interest is a deductible outgoing so for every £1 paid in interests it was saving between 20-28p in tax. As the PLC they were paying dividends, dividends are taken after tax and even if the PLC hadn't grown revenues at the rate of the Glazers so dividend growth had remained as it was dividend payments would have been around the 50% mark of the the interest payments but without the non-cash deductions that only existed because of the takeover that offset it. If they had grown revenues anywhere near the Glazers the dividend payments would have grown at a bigger rate as well. Now obviously the Glazers are now taking dividends although relatively at a lower rate than the PLC was paying although in total more which changes things but we also have seen them finance the debt so much that the interest rates now are pretty low. Ultimately the difference between the cost of the Glazers and the cost of the PLC really isn't that much despite how its often sold to play on fans emotions for clicks. There is a debate to be had about the Glazer and if they are good owners but as long as the out of context figures are what drives the conversation you can't really have that debate as the emotions from those figures derails it.
@Simon Wakefield If the information here is correct and the sources used here are acquirable it would be an interesting take for both @HITC Sevens and @Tifo Football (ua-cam.com/video/ICyJ-m4W4PU/v-deo.html 2:39-3:25), who are both credible and popular youtube-content creators, to look at your narrative of the case aswell. Especially considering HITC-Sevens is considering making a video about it as an own video. Your take on the "Glazer's and Man Utd-finances" is sorely needed in the discourse where the theme of the story is mostly "Glazer's = bad for Man-Utd and moneyhungry". Which i have bought into, and still do considering that is the narration "experts" have presented to me in the past. Sadly, I have a 'high-school'-lvl understandment on economics so having folks with the correct expertise talking about it in an understandble way is wanted. And your comment sure is understandable atmost, although the judicial rules [for example: "As the PLC they were paying dividends, dividends are taken after tax and even if the PLC hadn't grown revenues at the rate of the Glazers so dividend growth had remained as it was dividend payments would have been around the 50% mark of the the interest payments but without the non-cash deductions that only existed because of the takeover that offset it"] are "greek" for me...
Good video, yeah you could make one on the Glazers at a later date as well. It would be interesting going into detail on how they brought the club in the first place.
How on Earth did the Premier League board approve the Glazers takeover of Manchester United? Were they given a cut? It's mind-boggling how an owner or ownership group can take out loans to buy a club with the club as the collateral!
Not your problem
The worst part of all this is knowing that the Glazers put absolutely no money into the club, unlike other owners, they just keep taking money.
If it weren't for the Glazers, with all the money United have, I have absolutely no doubt that they'd have kept winning the league at the rate SAF won it after he retired
I doubt it. Spending hasn't been the issue as this video has shown. It's been the recruitment and overpaying for mediocre players.
As long as the glazers are in charge. We the fans, players and managers will lose
Another fantastic video from my favorite UA-cam channel. I definitely would love to see that Glazer video, idk if people outside the MUFC fanbase truly understand how truly awful people they are and what they’re doing to this club.
The fact that the Glazers are using this team the way rich kids use a trust fund is absolutely disgusting
Not if your the one paying the bills and running a monster like this club. GO GLAZERS.
United fans are so spoiled. You spend at least 100 million every year and are in the champions league. It could be so much worse
@@CuntyMcCuntface-ug5gt sorry to be spoiled but we were used to winning everything
Faisal Mahmud I’m just saying, some united fans would have you think they’re like Newcastle gearing up for yearly relegation battles under Mike Ashley
@@CuntyMcCuntface-ug5gt Sorry mate, I'll just be quiet about the quite frankly disgusting ownership of my club because we won the league a few times in the 90s and 00s. Apologies for offending you mate. Hope you have a nice day.
We ran out of money 15 years ago once Glazer took over and started taking money out of the club.
Yeah we’ve spent loads over the last few years but that’s a fraction of what the club generates.
So what's your problem?
Dude they could earn 200 mil more by being a good team and actually compete
Dude no they could not....... COMPETE !!........ are you serious . Look these excuse for players pick up their pay checks either way, so why bother. There is no one here who will confront them in the dressing room or throw tea cups around the place or throw boots at them. COMPETE lol such a an old fashioned idea. This is the new game idiot wake up. They look at videos during half time and listen to bul**** from managment who have no clue wot they are doing, trying to program players like robots when he does this you do this. Look see this picture see how the defender is 22 cm out of position.
Funny old world Clubs pay zillions for players who do not conform to "Robot Instructions" but can produce that piece of individual magic" only to knock that individuality out of them on the training ground.
You make a good point, but in order for that to happen, they would also need to lose a bit of control, because they would be replaced in position of power to people with competence in the field of football. And so it is that an accountant is their CEO and effectively also their DoF, which leaves Utd with a squad with very little coherence. LFC is the opposite. People of competence from top to bottom, and they don't need to make big investments onto a successful squad, because they bought competently, thus spent their money competently, and as a result are competitive and more likely to pull in more money from this competence.
They've spent the money in the last 6 years..it's just they've bought utter shit players constantly

I really like these in-depth videos you’ve been doing focusing on a single topic and diving real deep into it. This is fascinating stuff. Keep up the great work
I've always thought that the Glazer's takeover of Man United was one of the riskiest takeovers possible because as soon as Fergie would retire, did they have the football acumen to know who to replace him with and how would their transfer strategy pan out after that. We've all seen how abysmal they've been since and that they truly are using this as a cash cow vehicle. Up until recently, I would've said that they had no transfer plan and their manager selection has been iffy. Still, it looks as if they can get themselves a nice paycheque at the end of it all (I'm no fan of United but part of me wishes that I could attain that kind of money that the Glazers pay themselves out) and as long as they are profitable in merchandise and (when it's allowed) matchday revenue, they're pretty much here to stay.
Finally a video about what actually happens at United! I am even amazed that national broadcasters fail to point out this. There is a reason why are in shambles now and you explained this with back up! And other channels kerp on yalkimg about delusional transfers. Plain ignorance if you ask me! Or just don't understand finance.

Great video!
The biggest question should be, how did the FA and Premier League allow a solvent club to be bought on a leveraged buyout and take on this huge debt? Then 15 years later not only has the debt not been paid off its actually increased! I thought they had rules for the suitability of potential club owners, clubs and their finances? They seem to give out points deductions to Sheff Weds, Bolton and others when things go wrong. The money Man Utd brings in should not be allowed to be siphoned off elsewhere, specially when the stadium needs redeveopment and their transfer debt is the highest in the world. The Utd haters may laugh but this could happen to any PL club. The people running football need to change the rules to prevent this from happening again.
Im a liverpool fan and that net spend joke landed nicely :D
Excellent video ♥
looking forward to the glazer video
This was a great video liked very much . Yes would like to history on the glazers
I can deal with the slow transfers or even the poor performances on the pitch, but it's the amount of money that goes out of the club and the debt that really angers me.
Loving the Glazers business model.
The last point about fans changing teams when they're team isnt winning is the one of the biggest issues with modern day football. No loyalty/passion.
Why do you think successful clubs have more fans? It's mostly due to success. Unfortunately, especially for new fans or foreigners from other continents.
Rooting for another club is deplorable.
But I won't hold anything against fans who just don't want to stay at the cash cow farm.
The stupid Geordies at Tyneside swear at Ashley all they want , but they still end up putting cash in his pocket.
Banners and tirades on social media isn't going to get rid to the idiots responsible for these sub par signings, not paying for the stadium ticket, not buying the new gear, is the only way to get the Glazers to sell
I work in China and I’ve met plenty of ‘fans’ that are very open about switching to whatever club is winning the league at the time. A lot just don’t get the loyalty that comes with supporting a club-many support players instead. As a fan you’re there for the lows and that means you can truly enjoy the highs. These types of ‘fans’ will never understand how it feels to win a trophy or to beat your rivals or to get a shock win or lost. Being a fan is like marriage. It should be for life and only in extreme circumstances does it get broken like liquidation or just being so painful to support that it becomes unhealthy-looking at you Mike Ashley.
Another great video and shows how as soon as United’s rev drops we will be in big trouble and our rev will drop if we don’t start doing well and we can’t do well with the glazers in charge, just a downward spiral really

"Basically, Man Utd are still paying for players they've _already_ signed..."
Almost EVERY club structures its' transfer fees in such a way, and it is not only very common, I dare say it's the *prevalent* method of payments.
I remember that one time when Man Utd bought that one player - lets call him "Paul" to protect the innocent - for an insane amount of cash and paid him even more insane wages, and people were questioning it, I also remember when that money wasn't showing on the pitch when "Paul" played. I remember discussing that and Man Utd fans declaring it not mattering because Man Utd have a bottomless money pit - and them being told that's not how that works. Oof.

i think the solution for both the owners and fans is just to minimize unnecessary spending like overpaying wages n overpaying transfer fees, and differentiate between the club's sponsorship and commercial deals with the team's affairs. that way, glazers may pump more money for them while leaving the team alone n do its job (winning titles), while the team hopefully can get back up n improve with the manager and director of football get the veto power.
