I love the tone and the way you play the riffs. Black metal is easy until you want to play accurately to the recording. You nailed it, I watched the video just to listen to riffs
What i love about darkthrone, is that fenriz probably couldnt tell you what he was doing at the time. And also wouldnt care to. Hes all about the organics of it
Thank you for the video ! I had chills down my spine listening you play all these historical riffs of black metal. You really nailed the tunings i believe ! Educating and entertaining. I even pulled out a little varg-ish scream at 7:52
The tunings used here are very interesting indeed. I like the E standard (450 & 455Hz) tunings. Probably because I favour the F minor key.. also it gives off vibes of the harsh and biting blizzards
I think that Burzum s/t and Det Som Engang Var are quarter tone up, Hvis Lyset is F standard. DMDS is quarter tone down, but the same songs from Life Eternal EP are in standard tuning. Aftermath of some studio trickery, I guess.
The whole time im reading the cent numbers, In thinking. "I wonder if these guys were just fukked up and tuning by ear kuzz fukk pretty". And Boom! They basikly just didn't give a fukk. But real shit, respekt to you for putting it all together. Well done man. Well done.
I don’t think it had to do with the tuners at all. Tuning technology in the 90’s was terrible so typically if someone wanted to play along to a recording of their favorite song, they would just tune to the recording. Tape warp is also an issue within the hertz realm. If you were to record on an 8 track for example, the hertz of the original recording would warp. A couple cents flat or a couple cents sharp. That’s just one theory anyway.
I hated live in leipzig at first but now it might be my favorite live bm performance. Euronymous has such a fucking sick tone. Theres a ton of gain on it and I know its an hm2 but I cant get my hm2 to sound like that at all.
@@DevGohil I’ve been messing around with my sd1 and my hm2 and an equalizer to boost and cut some things and I’ve pretty much nailed the tone. You have to plug into the front of the amp to get the right sound, those old Marshall’s don’t have fx loops
Interesting video, I'm always stuck in E or D standard. Maybe should try other ones. By the way, I think a guitar lesson for Triumphant Gleam would be awesome. I haven't found a proper tab for that song yet.
Being a noob, but knowing all notes must be in harmony, i wonder what changes beyond the pitch occur. Is it how it is more comfortable for the musician to play? Is it the dynamics of the instrument itself?
Do you think it's a good idea to use a compressor pedal (like a Keeley) before going on an interface, for high gain tones? I find my sound lackluster/weak (using active pups) when compared to some ToneX riff samples
@@DevGohil ToneX seems to be quite good - it's all the rage these days, and the sample riffs for the presets it comes with, sound VERY full, unlike when I play them with my guitar (even though I have crazy high-gain pickups), that's why I was thinking about fattening up the clean signal, before goin into the audio interface.
Gear Used
Dean V79, Pattersonic EDG Pickup, Engl Powerball II, Marshall MF400A Cab, SM57
watch to the end for a surprise
The Pattersonic is quite pricey, are you sufficiently pleased with it? Does it get mushy at all being so high output?
@@thedddemon nope, it's great

Honestly love the sound of F standard tuning, another band called Vektor uses it very well
So these aren't weird tunings, our boys just didnt tune their shit properly XD

A brilliant breakdown of these iconic bands, albums and their tunings Dev. And have to add I loved one particular Burzum riff - 'this is huh Wow!
Hahah thanks bruv x

Thanks a lot man, welcome
This is incredibly helpful. I've been playing songs from these albums for years and did everything by ear. This accurate guide is extremely helpful.
Nice one man!

I need to find a way to chat to Pytten, to try and get the truths on these matters
450-455hz is 1/4 tone up from E I think. Now if there's a way for me to tune my guitar to it cos that's my favourite.
These weird tunings sound pretty cool, but it always annoys me when i have to find a cover to play along with the songs😭
i feel you my dude

Immortal's Pure Holocaust was sped up in the production that's the reason for the sharper sound on the album
So I’ve heard, bands need to be able to play their songs before recording
@@DevGohilI think they mightve just found they prefer the sped up sound after recording. That's happened to me before

Hit and miss, some notes on a guitar are not 100% true and are off slightly
@DevGohil you aren't talking about intonation, are you?

It's all probably down to artists using dodgy gear back then (slipping tuners?) and frankly not caring too much.

What is your opinion on greek black metal
it's cool, Dead Congregation is my fav greek band
is it possible that it's unintentional? that the process of recording was just not that professional
that too
