  • Happy New Year from us here at Theocast! We assume that you might’ve had some difficult conversations over the holidays about Jesus or about matters of theology and the Christian life. In light of that, how should we approach disagreement--amongst our family and friends, or even in our churches? (Hint: patience, gentleness, and love are generally useful.)
We hope this conversation is a help to you as you think about engaging others around you.

"People don't care about how much you know, until they know how much you care"
Please pray that I be gentle and lowly, like the heart of Jesus

Say, " I have a present position in Christ, now, that outshines anything earthly."

We are bludgeoned, because we have bludgeoned.

Hard truths produce soft hearts. Soft truths produce hard hearts. We are just getting acquainted with God's love for us. We need to fail at all the fruits of the Spirit so we can know God loves us, and we were never out of our perfect position in him, through all of our failures.

Yes, speak the truth in love. That God sent His Son to redeem any, all, everyone that will & CAN call upon Him. That He only desires some & gives all else what they deserve is antithetical to GRACE.

I'm very thankful for this. My Christian life has been radically deepened since becoming reformed, but my more "mainstream Christian" in-laws are alarmed and don't understand. I needed wisdom and this was helpful.

What I see is the same Spirit but in different degrees or different gifts of the Spirit. We can easily grieve the Spirit by thinking we all come to the truth in the same way, if others experience conversion differently or different doctrine grabs our hearts at different times we think it’s a different spirit. Over time God will use our gifts to build the body, the church, we are all parts of the body, different gifts that may appear to aggressive or to winsome. Persecution will have its effect on the Church, eyes will be open to see our unity in Christ and the preference and pride will submit to the love of Christ. We, the Church are being developed in ways that will be a witness to the world. Growing pains in the Church can be messy, God help us to grow in the way and leading of the Spirit and in Gods truth. Not always winsome, not always aggressive but always following the leading of the Spirit, not perfectly but in submission with the right heart.
No mater what side appeals to us, we understand that God uses imperfect people using are gift imperfectly, yet God can still build His Church. Trusting in Christ to build His Church despite us and yet through us. Amazing Grace! In the gospel of Christ, on display in a messy Church.

We are angry with God, when we are not patient and loving. We are fools saying no to God in our foolish fleshly heart. Don't say anything to the unsaved. Say it all to God's sovereign throne where you are seated. We can assume well of them, because any Christian has been with you in the heavenlies from the foundation of the world.

I am in such a situation right now. Our elders made a wrong decision, with no sound council, nor in communication with the church. After feedback they said they were "sorry for doing it this way, but we're not changing out mind". During the next meeting on the subject I (and others) were very passionate on how they were in error. Was I wrong for being so passionate (and probably blunt) of the elders did about everything wrong and weren't willing to be corrected at the first and second warning?

God never misunderstands us, but we, often don't care what God thinks. We are inveterate idolaters, so we get upset about them.

I wish I knew what you mean when you say "pastoral." You say it a lot. I am assuming you mean authoritative, but I don't know.
