Imagine if you could have foreseen the insane prices Gold Foils are going for in 2023 back in 2016! I got my Teisco Gold Foils the old fashioned way, from a guitar I found in the trash.
I've had the plan to put a gold foil in the neck & two hershey bars for middle & bridge in a strat .. watching this has really inspired me to get that done asap.. lovely playing bud.
Hey Mike, I feel I am the only one who knows how really fine, I mean very really fine of a soulful guitarist you are. You give what you got, and shi* , that is more than what I needed to get me through the day. Mucho Grazzziiiiii !!!!! For the record, I have been playing guitar for 40 years, and you my fine friend have mastered the blues guitar more than anyone I've heard. Always a great joy to hear and see your facial expression. You are the best concert I've been to in years, and I'm only watching a video ! Thank Mike. I hope one day I have the privilege of playing with you. I live in Pleasant Hill Ca. My name is Spider Fingers Rob. I've got to say that i have probably seen more Legends of the Blues than you have and still live to talk about it. Find me and do us both a favor. Seriously ? Yes , Seriously. The blues are in me and theyz got to come out !
Just bought my first Teisco. Not good foil but still a single foil. I hope I can get it to sound that good. One of your best d remonstrations with a backing track. WOW
First of all great playing. 🙏 From my iPad it sounds great when you play the pedal steel licks. I’ll check it out with studio real speakers. I’m putting two old Teisco pups on a new Epiphone Les Paul SL.
Nice tone, cool set-up. gives a thought as to my next build. Thanks, I've been watching some of your other videos, Really liked the baby blue Hag and your work. Another one of those guitars I let slip away in the early 70s. Live and Learn. Thanks again, Bill.
They have a distinctive sound which I'm sure you were going for . I wouldn't have modded the strat but wouldve found a Teisco in need of better pickups, that's just me, and I did enjoy the video .
It's funny how gd foils have become really popular in recent years, as they were always cheaply made budget pickups in their heyday. It's much like how everyone nowadays loves the danelectro lipstick tube pickups which themselves were also designed to be very cheap to make. Really goes to show that expense is not everything. The cheapest things can end up sounding the best, like these gold foil pick ups which do genuinely sound amazing.
DAMN, MIke! You're makin' me CRY again! Geez! What fuzz are you using!? Did you change effects at all between the warmup and the jam? Where did the backing track come from? ...Is it available!
Amazing tone and playing. Very tasty indeed. Apologies for the dumb question, but what knobs have you put on this guitar? I thought they were Gibson amber bell, but they look much nicer.
Francois, thanks man. That lick is in D major. You pull the B string 10th fret and hit the E string 9th fret. So it's the maj7 or C# instead of the root note D. I hope that helps.
I used an under-mount for these, with custom routed pick guards for the gold foils. I'm currently building another one with the bridge pup as a surface mount.
I have 2 of these gold foils on a vintage Japanese Audition guitar, and even played through a basic amplifier they have a lovely clean tone. As they have one row of pole pieces I assume that they are single coils, but the dimensions of the top of the pickup are quite large for a single coil, (3 and 2/8ths" x 1 and 1/8th"), and I was curious as to what else is there under that chrome cover ?
you ever try the GFS Teisco Strat pickups? they also make a humbucker like though's. thats what i though you where useing at first the saw your discription. Point is. im building a guitar. got a cheep starcaster and reshaped the top hald. more tear drop shaped now. and took the paint off ( pain in the ass ) but I plan to put the GFS gold foil strats in this pretty puppy. But the 3 hummers sounds killer.. next project. but i guess my real question is... have you ever tryed them. how would you compair them to vintage gold foils.. ( the new strat style gold foils GFS makes )
Thank you Charles. This is one of the best Strats I ever played, mainly because of the response of the gold foil pick-ups. It just makes me want to play and the Gary Moore track helps too!
Mike if you ever come anywhere close to Tulsa...I'd love to see you wipe the floor with you're mojo pickin'. WOW. I could listen to you all day long! BTW, did you wire the middle pickup out of phase?
I am afraid much scoffing was done. I also admit to thinking all that era Japanese pickups were exactly the same. What are the electronics involved? Particularly at the end it sounded damn good. Are they Fender pots with standard caps like .022 or so?
Ha, yeah I get that. I had to frankenstein stuff out of necessity but I learned a lot through trial and error. Pretty much Fender style wiring job but sometimes I bypass the tone control altogether to get the most authentic tone. Pot value is important too. On hotter pickups I use 500k, but I believe I used 250k with the Teisco gold foils.
You do damn good work. By chance do you remember resistance of the coils? Magnets original???? Beats the living hell out of a Telecaster, NoCaster, Esquire (Bruce). In my mind it is the Holly Shit Caster.. oohhh neck position.....not the usual Strat thing but now I think I get it
I'm not sure if it's the pickups or this man's incredible playing, but this is wonderful. Well, well, well done sir.
Thank you. My pleasure!
Arguably the best sounding strat I've every heard. Remarkable playing and those gold foils are amazing.
Ty that was my mission
Probably the best-sounding Strat I've ever heard--absolutely searing! Ry Cooder would be proud!
Thanks Maxwell!
Imagine if you could have foreseen the insane prices Gold Foils are going for in 2023 back in 2016! I got my Teisco Gold Foils the old fashioned way, from a guitar I found in the trash.
WOW, those are the best sounding pickups ever. I've got two I need to put in another guitar.
Great playing, great tone
Thanks!
I've had the plan to put a gold foil in the neck & two hershey bars for middle & bridge in a strat .. watching this has really inspired me to get that done asap.. lovely playing bud.
Appreciate it. Go for it!.
whoa, not every day that i watch a pickup demo and find myself enjoying the music! some serious guitar playing;)
Sounds just like a really clear PAF pick up and I really liked the taste for guitar play as well! Thank you!

Thank you for getting it and hearing it Spider Fingers. Are you Jazz Mo Dex?
Just bought my first Teisco. Not good foil but still a single foil. I hope I can get it to sound that good. One of your best d remonstrations with a backing track. WOW
Thank you!
You can hear Strat and you can hear gold foils! Killer combination.
This guitar sounds incredible. Amazing!
Thanks Jonn. Yeah, these pick-ups are incredible!
Great playing and a superb sound.
ngl, i normally skip in-the-mix demos, but i'm glad i stuck around. amazing playing, the music sat nicely in the back, and wow what tone.
Thanks for giving us a chance. We appreciate your ear.
Great phrasing there my friend, I dig...
Thank you!
First of all great playing. 🙏 From my iPad it sounds great when you play the pedal steel licks. I’ll check it out with studio real speakers. I’m putting two old Teisco pups on a new Epiphone Les Paul SL.
Sweet! Thanks man!
now THAT is a sweet guitar! -and always some great playing!
I love your videos, thanks for sharing all these beautiful guitars!
Sweet synthesis between sound and feeling, so nice!!! Just before tears... to late...
Thank you so much for finding us and really listening!
Man, you love your classic film soundtracks like Pump Up the Volume. Awesome film!
Nice tone, cool set-up. gives a thought as to my next build. Thanks, I've been watching some of your other videos, Really liked the baby blue Hag and your work. Another one of those guitars I let slip away

Thanks Bill!
they sound really good, nice playing too
Crazy nice sounding pups in this!
They are special!
They have a distinctive sound which I'm sure you were going for . I wouldn't have modded the strat but wouldve found a Teisco in need of better pickups, that's just me, and I did enjoy the video .
Incredible playing. Well done, sir!
Pickups sound great.
Thanks!
Great sounding guitar...and you play it well......
Thank you Azhar!
Can you do a demo with clean tones? To get a better understanding of these pup
Love that GO VOL's color. Oh, and it sounded good too. Bet it would really sing on Rocky Top.
Gold foil is the new PAF. They have an unsurpassed and powerful amount of clarity.
It's funny how gd foils have become really popular in recent years, as they were always cheaply made budget pickups in their heyday. It's much like how everyone nowadays loves the danelectro lipstick tube pickups which themselves were also designed to be very cheap to make.

great playing great pickups !!!!!
Appreciate it.
DAMN, MIke! You're makin' me CRY again! Geez!
What fuzz are you using!?
Did you change effects at all between the warmup and the jam?
Where did the backing track come from? ...Is it available!
We usually use a Big Muff for fuzz, and the backing track is floating around on the internet
very acoustic sounding pickups.. so clear.. and sweet.. do those have Alnico magnets?
I think they are actually rubber-type magnets... like what would be on a refrigerator magnet!
This is pure joy to the eyes and ears!!!!
Thank you!
Killer playing and sweet guitar! What's your setup like?
Thanks! Using .10s on this one
+drowninginguitars what pedals are you using?
Similar set-up for most all our vids is a Fulltone OCD, Big Muff, various delays and a Earthquaker Echo, through a Savage Macht amp
+drowninginguitars Thanks good to know. My favorite muff is a Deluxe Op Amp from '79
Yup, me too!
amazing playing. that's a really cool strat, too. i don't believe i've ever seen that color.
Thanks Zack

Amazing tone and playing. Very tasty indeed. Apologies for the dumb question, but what knobs have you put on this guitar? I thought they were Gibson amber bell, but they look much nicer.
Good eye Andy! I got them here... reverb.com/shop/justins-gear-depot-16
Really digging the end of that
Thank you!
Muy buen blues, felicitaciones
sounds great! looking to do something like this... a take on a "coodercaster" .. any tips on the install?
I guess my best advice is to get a properly routed pick guard. On a stratocaster, the pickups work very well mounted under the guard
Can you play spirit in the sky with this setup?
Hi Man, what was that damned country lick from 0.30 to 0.38, I've been breakin' my fingers trying to figure out what you were doing...wow
Francois, thanks man. That lick is in D major. You pull the B string 10th fret and hit the E string 9th fret. So it's the maj7 or C# instead of the root note D. I hope that helps.
Très joli, superbe son et quel toucher! I like it! (y)
Very cool, tone & playing is amazing as always. Did you mount pickups on top of pick guard or in it?
I used an under-mount for these, with custom routed pick guards for the gold foils. I'm currently building another one with the bridge pup as a surface mount.
drowninginguitars what do you hope to achieve by doing this?
I have 2 of these gold foils on a vintage Japanese Audition guitar, and even played through a basic amplifier they have a lovely clean tone. NICE. You make me feel so good. Love your playing. I Subscribed. Can't wait to hear more. : -)
Thanks Brother
Wow that's great brother. We got 500 videos to choose from. Enjoy and thank you!
Imagine how wicked that thing would look in all black.
At last. A Strat I might like to have. Even Leo Fender would have to admit to enjoying this.
Leo was the man!
Great sounding guitar !
Thanks!

I haven't tried those GFS pups but I have seen them. Maybe someone else can chime in?
I suddenly feel a lot better about my $40 purchase of a 60’s Knox (Teisco) that has two gold foils.
The neck is the winner on that set.
Isn't Ry Cooder a big fan of these pickups?
He is indeed. they're awesome, especially for slide!
All I can say is WOW.
Thanks brother!
Great guitar playing
Thank you Charles. This is one of the best Strats I ever played, mainly because of the response of the gold foil pick-ups. It just makes me want to play and the Gary Moore track helps too!
@@mikeduganblues What ever it was I'm sure you would find a way of making it sound good
Kudos my friend pure kudos
Thank you Terence, I appreciate the heartfelt feedback.
I need help finding at least 2 good gold pickups for my budget parts-caster, I need help figuring out where to get them!
Lollar makes some repros, but you just have to search the usual haunts and you can find interesting stuff like this... requires patience
So cool, I’d like to do this with a jaguar
Excellent.
Mike if you ever come anywhere close to Tulsa...I'd love to see you wipe the floor with you're mojo pickin'. WOW. I could listen to you all day long! BTW, did you wire the middle pickup out of phase?
Thanks for the cool words. I don't think it was out of phase.
Leads to think that the teisco sound has more to do with the body and construction than what many would care to give those credit for.
Somebody should research this. Compare several sets of identical pickups mounted in an old Teisco and in some more "conventional" models.
👍😊 pøzitiv mån. . I love the way you take 💖❤💖❤
🌟🌞🌟🌞🌟🌞🌟
You just made my day Sir ! cheers.
Thanks!
Where did you acquire the pickguard for this? Thanks
I custom made a few of these pickguards because I had so many gold foils laying around and wanted to use them up
How did you go about doing that? I've mounted two teisco gold foils mounted in a strat body, but been trying to brain storm ways to make a pickguard.
I mounted the pickups under the guard but I had to do some routing on the body.
Sorry, I meant how did you make the pickguard!
Ok, I just bought a stratocaster blank and used a Dremel tool to carve out the holes... I'm a total caveman!!
Guitar sounds sweet looks sweet and is played sweet ☺
Malcolm thank you for taking the time to respond. Much appreciated!
You got anything with Maxon pups in it?
Nothing with new Maxons, just 60s era. Although I have heard some of the Maxons from the late 70s/early 80s and they were awesome
Я тащусь , балдею и просто наслаждаюсь от этой гитарной музыки ,-
в Вашем исполнении, много уважаемый мастер!
Thank you so much!
Salute from Moscow!
What amp and pedals did you use?
For this demo, Savage Macht 12 amp, Fulltone OCD, Big Muff, and some sort of echo pedal which changes all the time
Which Amp Please..?
A Savage Macht amp, made in the USA
Did You use ONLY A Big Muff for sustained tones? TRULY? THKS FOR THE ANSWER!
Yes, our pedalboard uses a tuner, delay, Fulltone OCD, and a Big Muff. I use several different Big Muffs but the fuzz is always that
he's in the zone
Thanks Nathan. Yeah, I felt real good on this one!

Sounds to me like David Gilmore and Roy Buchanan had a love child. Great stuff.
Wow, great compliment. Thanks!
Well damn!
WHAT THE CHEAP GREAT SOUNDING PUP IS GOING ON HERE. BUYING A DEL RAY AFTER WORK TODAY
Solid up vote but still have to ask WTF??? Now I have to wonder about these cheap as possible pick-ups with real electronics.....so many questions
As a youngster I was like the king of frankenstein guitars, and I always would mix and match stuff. Never scoff at vintage Japanese pickups.
I am afraid much scoffing was done. I also admit to thinking all that era Japanese pickups were exactly the same. What are the electronics involved? Particularly at the end it sounded damn good. Are they Fender pots with standard caps like .022 or so?

These usually measure out around 5-6k, and the magnets are actually like rubber... sort of like refrigerator magnets!
thanks a lot. you're the best.
Thanks Dave. That means a lot. Appreciate you taking the time to listen,
Sounds like Mac demarco
Thanks Alan
you put some stank on it,cleaned it up,then put some stank back on it!!!!
Ha! Well said Jerry. Please check in again. Thanks!
bravo sir
