    A TATA for you, if I may: what determines if a pickup is supposed to be used on the bridge or neck position? Output, tone? Both? None?

    • @jckmthr
      @jckmthr 3 роки тому +8

      Believe it or not, it’s commonly due to string spacing. Although many people have different specs of pickups between neck and bridge, generally, the poles on the neck pickup are slightly less spaced out due to the strings drawing closer towards the nut

    • @kyyowa129
      @kyyowa129 3 роки тому +7

      For many of the old P-90 equipped Gibsons, the neck and bridge pickups were identical. While differently constructed and different output pickups are more commonly used in neck and bridge positions today, much of the tonal difference comes solely from one pickup experiencing more treble frequencies at the bridge and the other experiencing more bass frequencies at the base of the neck.

    This pickup actually sounds good after a bit of TLC. Maybe there could be a part 2? This could be in terms of cleaning up the cloth (I would suggest just re-spraying the existing cloth with gold paint) and potting it with wax to fix its microphonic nature. I would also suggest trying it in a bridge position as I think that might suit it better.

    If you want less noise, you shouldn't solder a ground lead connecting to the back of your pots if they are already connected with their shafts to a metal shielding plate or foil... (if, of course the pot shaft is connected to the backside of the potentiometer..) You need to contact each part you want in the grounding circuit, ONCE to ground! What your doing if you, for example did what you have in (timestamp) 10:11, you basically create a "coil" with one wrap! Which, acts as antenna.. Just my 2 cents! Cheers.

    I have a old foil pickup that looks a lot like that that’s so microphonic I actually screwed it to the top of a old cheap nylon string classical guitar. It actually sounded great. It was a cheaper one than that one though (believe it or not they made cheaper built ones) it had a thin coil with a iron bar in the middle setting on a huge ceramic magnet. Weird pickup but a surprisingly good microphone for acoustic guitar lol

  • @HandlebarWorkshops
    @HandlebarWorkshops 3 роки тому +1

    It took me a while to visualize how the magnetic field from the magnets would interact with the coil windings. To me, it seemed like you'd want a more uniform magnetic field from neck side of the pickup to the bridge side - thus N and S facing the middle.
    You mentioned that the pole pieces were getting magnetized by the magnets, but I couldn't figure out how that would be when the magnets are on the outsides of the windings. I had to go back and re-watch to see that the metal piece that the pole pieces screw into also goes under the coil to touch each of the magnets. That gives the inside of the coil an N polarity and a S polarity on each of the long sides, outside of the coil. Using the right hand rule on both the neck side and the bridge side of the coil shows both fields generating current in the same direction around the coil.
    Got it! Interesting pickup design.

  • @casanovafunkenstein5090
    @casanovafunkenstein5090 3 роки тому +1

    Have you ever done a video on Burns Tri-sonic pickups?
    They're about the only pickup design that I'm aware of that has the magnetic poles pointing transverse to the strings, as opposed to the more regular longitudinal orientation used by most manufacturers and I think that's quite interesting.
    Only major downside is that if you want to use the original design and not the strat footprint one that they brought out more recently you're going to have to modify or buy an instrument because those things are huge.
    That and trying to wind a coil without a bobbin seems like it would be quite fiddly.

Pickup electronics has been always been my a lot of queries and have been reading, watching many professionals in this area, have taken Seymour Duncan 101 course, following ThroBak Guitar Lounge, Dylan Talks tone and other guitar electronics and tone nods!! Please excuse my silly question, according to ThroBak Guitar Lounge company UA-cam channel in case of changing the type of Alnico magnet in vintage PAF pickup, both ends plus the top and bottom parts of the Magnet bar need to be checked as well !! Which made me think what is the exact pattern of magnetism around all ends of the bar !!( top, bottom, ends and the sides) 🤔🤔Your input is much appreciated please in a new video on your channel explaining how to do reversing the polarity of the humbucker bridge can be understood in addition reversing the wiring too to have hum free pickup especially when using rotatory 5 way 4 poles switch wiring Bridge humbucker and Neck humbucker pickups!! I’ve been told that Ireland also has peat or turf, but in the Irish whiskies I’ve tasted, that special “the earth is smouldering” taste isn’t there…

    Very informative. Kinda assumed would be done to the magnets. Evidently in my guitar journey I’m learning which is always a positive. Unrelated question . I’ve recently acquired a re issue epiphone coronet. Has cts pots. And p90 pro in the bridge. ( only has the one pick-up) I’m going to switch it out. But unsure as to whether go down the Monty’s 54 p90 in bridge which gets great reviews. Or change it to a a reproduction of the original New Yorker pick-up by Curtis Novak who has a great reputation with an altered pick gaurd to match. He winds them to similar output of a vintage p90. Any suggestions on which one you would opt for? Any advice be helpful . Cheers

    Good video - nice to see Ryan pop in.
    I'll be buggered if I have ever been able to understand magnetic fields!
    Edit: were you recording on that tape machine behind you?

      That tape machine in the back is true, old school, analog tape delay.

    To summarize, there was something wrong with the pickup. Something about the magnet. Colin fexed et.
    That is all we commoners need to know.

    That gold looks exactly like a hot foil stamping. there's a few youtubers doing old school press printing that I've seen doing that sort of thing.

    14:03 but that's not a 90 degrees rotation, right ?

    • @ScienceofLoud
      @ScienceofLoud  3 роки тому

      The smallest rotation one can perform on a cuboid is 90 degrees for it to sit flat on a face.
      To invert North to South one needs to rotate the magnet 2 x 90 degrees, or 180 degrees.

    • @ScienceofLoud
      @ScienceofLoud  3 роки тому +2

      a single 90 degree rotation would have the North facing down or up, which isn't useful
