I’m 75, just a couple of years older than John Prine, and he was the voice of my generation. A piece of me died along with John on April 7, 2020. Rest in peace, my friend; you will be missed by all of us who knew and loved you. You may be gone, but your music will live on forever.
Depends on the genre you were into. I liked Dylan as well; I just liked Prine better. I still listen to both of them today, along with many other great artists from that time period.
Sometimes when I listen to John Prine, I wonder how in the world I can miss someone I have never met, so badly? I guess it might be the way his words felt and still feel, every time I hear them.
I had tickets to see him for the first time ever, in London, postponed due to illness, then the replacement postponed gig was cancelled, and covid took him a month or so later. I know what you mean about missing someone I never saw or met…
I can't hear this without a mighty mean and a dreadful sorrow. My God John what have you sung! Best song ever written, explains my life to a tea. John Prine songs are prayers that touch the very core of my soul. Fish and whistle is a masterpiece, this is superb, many more make me laugh or cry or wonder why. I love you John you changed my life with your words your art and your compassion. Thank you so much, such a gift.
Amen. JP Never asked for fame in fact he was happy playing at the club but I am so glad then I was fortunate enough to find his music. Hard to not get emotional When listening to his stuff wow what great stuff and great truths about life. Never changed his caring for regular people and even people that society considers OutKasts. Loved the man. Certainly a great loss but what a blessing you have so many future generations and us
John Prine died last night from the coronavirus that is killing thousands around the world. Such a great singer-songwriter that will be sorely missed. Fly high, John and rest in peace.
We never took you and your music for granted, John, but I can honestly say that on Dec 6, 2020 we have never missed you and your music more! Rest in peace, friend, and smoke a 9-mile long one for us too! We'll always love you!
This is true music in my opinion Tremendous. I dont believe many that have been given life on this blessed earth are so fortunate to play and create such. May God richly bless you and yours
You have one of the greatest experiences of life awaiting you. Listen to EVERYTHING John Prine has ever written. He is a National Treasure and every song is precious. Then listen to Bill Murray's statement about John that is on UA-cam also. Enjoy!!!
I love it when I hear/read that people are still discovering music that to some people might be common knowledge or household names. I like to think I know a good deal about certain types of music but then I find some artist that has been around for decades and wonder how did I not know that. It gives me hope that good music will live on.
I didn’t discover his music until 1982, after being transplanted in the Midwest, after living in Germany for several years. His lyrics and simple guitar accompaniment express so much of my own own experience and feelings. His words are so simple, but convey meaning and emotional content that go straight to the heart. I feel such a loss knowing he is no longer with us.
Wish I could have had the opportunity to see John Prine performing. Before corvid 19 I noticed he was planning to come to Vancouver on June 6th this year, and it happens to be my wedding anniversary and was thinking of getting tickets. I only recently discovered his music, and enjoy listening to it while painting in my art studio. I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing from corvid 19. My heart goes out to his family and friends in their tragic loss. What a beautiful soul. He will still be singing in Heaven, along with so many other greats.
Love all of John's songs - but this one, had to have come from some type of divine inspiration. It is the greatest song ever recorded by anyone, ever. Makes me sad every time I think he is no longer with us.
I may not be the Prine fan that my parents are, but it's impossible to not admit that he isn't something that America should treasure until the day he leaves us. Incredible song writing, composition and voice.
'The Speed of the Sound of Loneliness': my absolute favourite of his songs. To this day, I don't know what that phrase means but the song stops me in my tracks every time.
I was introduced to this song by The Alabama 3. I've become a more devoted Prine fan since. Thank you Jake "D. Wayne Love" Black. I hope you're looking down from a better place.
Great tune . It's one of the first songs I learned to play when I started playing guitar . It was my mothers favorite John Prine tunes . After learning that tune I learned " that's the way that the world goes round " . Praying for John and Fiona that last few days . He is a national treasure. Please lord don't take him
"Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness" You come home late and you come home early You come on big when you're feeling small You come home straight and you come home curly Sometimes you don't come home at all [Chorus:] So what in the world's come over you And what in heaven's name have you done You've broken the speed of the sound of loneliness You're out there running just to be on the run Well I got a heart that burns with a fever And I got a worried and a jealous mind How can a love that'll last forever Get left so far behind [Chorus] It's a mighty mean and a dreadful sorrow It's crossed the evil line today Well, how can you ask about tomorrow We ain't got one word to say [Chorus] [Ending:] You're out there running just to be on the run You're out there running just to be on the run You're out there running just to be on the run
Out on the runnin’ just to be on the run... (Lovely) Now John mastered a few chords, a few base runs, hammers and pull offs and it made him world famous. God bless. (That is what Travis Picking can do for you). Thousands of hours practice before that thumb gets loose from the hand.
This has to be the best version of the song ever. Chris' mandolin is impeccable.
My day is not complete until I listen to JP!!!!!

I had wanted to see John for years. He was coming to Scotland and I had tickets. But he ended up dying of covid. RIP John

The best ever recording of his song...his voice and timing is raw and perfect. Thank you John Prine.

I am jealous of anybody that gets to listen to the music of John Prine for the first time. It's like eating your first cheeseburger.
My first time and I'm 62 why did I wait so long? I love this music!!
Sounds like the first time every time I hear him, never gets old...

Sometimes the speed sound of loneliness is like a G force ,

Outstanding show. I had never heard of John Prine before he came on stage and of all the talent on stage that night, Prine's songs hit me the hardest.
That's what his songs do.
You have one of the greatest experiences of life awaiting you. Listen to EVERYTHING John Prine has ever written. He is a National Treasure and every song is precious. Then listen to Bill Murray's statement about John that is on UA-cam also. Enjoy!!!
Welcome to the club :) I "met" him 12 years ago and he changed my life.

There are two kinds of people. Either you love John Prine or you have never heard of him!
amazing!
Nice version of a brilliant song.
This is in my opinion the best song JP ever wrote. Possible (other then Yesterday) the most beautiful pop song ever written.
What a great songwriter. One of my favourite songs. So so sad.Rest in peace John.

Don't miss seeing John Prine in a live show, if you have the chance. We saw him in Reno last fall, one of the best shows I've ever seen.

I play this song on my guitar and it always makes me happy.
Your beautiful music will live on always. So thankful to have seen you.

Judson Clayto This song in particular, hit me hard for obvious reasons.
The pain and anguish behind this breaks my daggum heart. Really

"Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness"
You come home late and you come home early
You come on big when you're feeling small
You come home straight and you come home curly
Sometimes you don't come home at all
[Chorus:]
So what in the world's come over you
And what in heaven's name have you done
You've broken the speed of the sound of loneliness
You're out there running just to be on the run
Well I got a heart that burns with a fever
And I got a worried and a jealous mind
How can a love that'll last forever
Get left so far behind
[Chorus]
It's a mighty mean and a dreadful sorrow
It's crossed the evil line today
Well, how can you ask about tomorrow
We ain't got one word to say
[Chorus]
[Ending:]
You're out there running just to be on the run
You're out there running just to be on the run
You're out there running just to be on the run
Classic, timeless, contemporary, THANKS
