    Just got mine today! So excited. Such a great 'Getting Started' video. Eric is amazing
    After what feels like 20 years using the Logitech Marble mouse (yes even going back to the white 2 button one) I found Gameball about a year and a half ago.
    The fact that this unit was essentially 'built by the community' shows in its features.
    - No software required
    - Easy, simple, yet functional settings and options
    - Quick DPS precision change
    I am truly impressed
    Can't wait to test it out

    Eric, I love this crazy beast. It definitely has a larger learning curve for First Person Shooter games than the "other thumb ball versions/brands" but the quality is unmatched. By quality... you discuss this already in the video but for others reading this, you can feel the quality in terms of construction and function. The buttons and ball feel very durable and I'm pretty rough on my stuff. I've been using a track ball for close to 15 years now and you now have a customer for life with the GameBall.
    Personally... I have a wishlist for a wireless version. Keep up the mad-scientist work!

    Got this today and it's great. Some people have swapped the back button and left click which I did initially but now I've gone back to the default. I found that if you move your hand back a bit and lay the thumb along the lower button, it makes sense.
    The only issue I would say I have with this is the scroll pad - it's too easy to accidentally scroll because it's natural to rest the index finger on it. But I guess this is part of the learning curve. Have only been using it for a short while and think it is potentially better than my old Logitech Marble Mouse which is now discontinued for some idiotic reason.

    Years ago the main reason why I switched from a mouse to a trackball is because I'm using a "cockpit" that I use also for flight sims, with a moving chair and vibrations. Years ago the vibrations made the mousepad vibrate too, and the mouse moved as well and eventually falled down from my cockpit. Not this issue with a trackball, the ball does not move even if my cockpit vibrates. Also it is easier to find the trackball in VR because it is always at the same place :)

    After using my Gameball for a few days I have some pro's and con's for a right handed user. The Pro's....first of all the ball movement is one of the best I have used (I have been using trackballs for over 15 years) it is smooth and responsive and the built in levels of adjustment are amazing. I also like the easy configurability of all the settings, the lighting is also a nice touch. Now for the Con's.....First of all I realize that building an ambidextrous trackball to maybe attract more users seems good on paper but in reality I don't think it is possible....this is the first ambidextrous model I have used and it just can't compete with dedicated L & R models in the comfort department. Instead of having your hand in a natural position you have to alter it to conform to the design, I have average size hands and I could not find a position that was comfortable for extended use (I mainly use it for GIS in ArcMap for my work) and the buttons on the right side are in such a vertical position that you have to push sideways with the right ring finger for a right click, which is such an un-natural action for that finger. I had to swap the left click button to the bigger front button. I tried for a day with the standard button setup but for me the smaller lower button was just too hard to reach. Overall the construction, materials and build are excellent but the useability is suffering because of the universal attempt of the design. I will continue to use it for at least a month and provide better feedback then.

    • @GameBallTrackball
      @GameBallTrackball  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you for the feedback. We try to read all feedback. Yes, ambidextrous has some trade-offs, but we are still very happy with the overall end result. The "Pro" model will be right handed.

      The comfort is an acquired taste if you’ve never used a Ambi trackball. Some of us started with an ambidextrous Logitech 😅 meaning when I use a left or right hand trackball model or even a normal mouse it feels extremely awkward, like if a right handed baseball player tried swinging left it just feels WEIRDD. So the comfort thing isn’t really a con. Can’t wait for mine to come, actually think it arrives today lol. I’ve been using the ambidextrous Logitech trackball since I was like 10 not even and now I’m 30 😂 yall got no idea how relieving this mouse is going to be to me 😭 thank you @GameBallTrackball

  • @derekjc777
    @derekjc777 6 місяців тому +1

    I've just received my GameBall and had chance to try it. It is very good but the default key mappings seem illogical to me. I am using the trackball in my left hand, although I am not left-handed, and therefore do not want to just reverse all of the buttons and functions, and being a user of ambidextrous trackballs for over 20 years, I am rather set in my ways. But attempting to re-map the buttons and functions is where the problems start.
    The main issue is there is no custom driver for the GameBall, leaving users to rely on third-party software. The mouse remapping software available for Windows users is X-Mouse Button Control; this software works but it applies to all mouse and trackpad inputs, meaning if you re-map buttons for the GameBall you screw up the mapping for every other input device! The solution is to have multiple "layers", and I recommend having the Layer 1 as default. Woe betide you to try to use the wrong input device on the wrong layer, it will most likely mean some functions are impossible to use, like the left-hand mouse button!
    And this is where a custom driver comes in. If you have a custom driver it would only remap the commands from devices matching the GameBall's signature, leaving all other devices alone. This means you do not have to switch controller when using a different computer, you just download the driver and set it up as you wish. If you switch the GameBall for another trackball, mouse or trackpad, they just work unaffected.
    I am investigating whether I can write a custom driver for the GameBall, since X-Mouse is a far from perfect solution.

  • @Centttttt60
    @Centttttt60 3 роки тому +3

    17:35 my recommendation in order to not lose precision if no CPI setting feels quite right, would be to choose the next higher CPI setting and down regulating (!) via software.
    This way the hardware sensor reports all readings with high precision, but the software will simply skip/ignore a reading "every now and then" ==> no loss in precision.
    If you were to do the opposite, the software setting will add additional cursor movement, thus possibly skipping over a pixel even though you have performed the smallest possible move for your particular CPI settings, which may make subtle movements actually impossible.

One of the things I like best about trackballs is that they don't need a lot of desk space and so they work very well for being an input for controlling media run through a PC on a large screen TV. The thing with thumb trackballs is that the ball has to be smaller. And a smaller ball means less precision. So a bigger ball is more accurate, therefore a finger trackball is more accurate and also allows for easier movements when you have to roll the ball fast. btw what size is the ball?

    • @GameBallTrackball
      @GameBallTrackball  3 роки тому +2

      38.1mm or 1.5 inches. I think it is hard to say that one ball size is more precise than another. I believe it depends on the dexterity and preference of the individual more than anything. I like a smaller ball because I can cover more surface area which gives me a better "feel" for the ball. Again, I think preference, experience, and finger dexterity have allot to do with it.

      You will have to play with the settings to see exactly what you like. Or, just use default windows acceleration.

    Don't know if you'll see this Eric, but you've used the microsoft trackball explorer I believe; does this represent a good replacement? I've been after a trackball like the explorer for yonks, My very first trackball mouse was the explorer and I loved the thing to bits, literally.

      I think it will be a nice replacement, but it will depend. For example, the ball is smaller and you may prefer the larger ball. The hand sits the same but how you press the buttons is a little different (again just a preference thing). Overall GameBall has a much more modern sensor, more buttons, new features (Vertical and horizontal scrolling), and better components. But, I am very biased :-)

      @@GameBallTrackball Appreciate it, was gonna buy anyway, really want to get back to a trackball mouse. hopefully can get in on the first batch.

      To anyone that's on the fence about having a trackball mouse for gaming, I was in a top 100 clan in the old Battlefield 2 game, everyone else in the group had normal gaming mice, typically logitech mx518s, razer diamondback or similar popular gaming mice at the time. I had the microsoft trackball explorer, which was just a general use trackball of the day; and was considered the star player of the team. Got tired of being accused of hacking and even by my own teammates; had my brother come through one time to check for them because of some good plays during a clan training match!
      Eventually that same brother convinced me to get one of the popular gaming mice at the time (logitech g5) with the encouragement of "imagine how much better you could be with a proper gaming mouse". Truth be told there was no discernible difference in my play ability once I had grown used to it, and piloting a helicopter or jet in-game was actually much easier and MUCH more fun with the trackball. Also the trackball was just generally more comfortable to use, which I believe made using the computer more enjoyable in general. So I'm really looking forward to getting one of these, hope others give it a chance too.
      Best wishes and cheers from the UK!

    I'm a 'huge' trackball fan, and have owned almost all of the well known ones going back to early 1990s; I'm really looking forward to trying out yours and will definitely order one - hopefully the wireless black-ball version. One criticism which is a bit trite and trivial but important for us obsessives: get your audio on these presentations under control please. It is extremely NON-confidence-inspiring to observe your inability to fix such a basic thing as audio in your presentation, especially as you are a technology hardware person. It is a potential harbinger of many technical glitches and other issues in the gameball device. Like I said, not confidence inspiring at all.

    Any plans to make things compatible with QMK-VIA? It's fairly standard key remapping/firmware update program (so alleviates concerns about support drop off and avoids the windows only issue with x-mouse and the firmware updater), has a fairly good UI (VIA) and even though it's a bit off brand (not a keyboard so the interface in via will look a bit strange) the custom keyboard crowd probably has some overlap with those interested in trackballs. Also would allow perfectly free button changing for everyone rather than just the few in the firmware (for example MS explorer-like config with mouse clicks both on thumb and nav both on pinky, not currently supported without x-mouse).

      @@GameBallTrackball My unsolicited $0.02 for the thumb version (I've spent LOTS of time designing this in my head, lol)...One of the challenges is angle adjustability. This is a must, and other manufacturers have different takes on accomplishing it. The Pro Fit Ergo doesn't bother at all, which eliminates it for many people myself included. The MX Ergo is the best of the current bunch (but it's wireless only and relatively few customizable buttons - thus the opportunity for gameball) - their tilt plate is nice but overly complicated & at times unstable. I like the simplicity of how the permice 520 handles the task - it comes with various sized (but too few) "wedges" that attach very nicely & securely to the bottom of the unit. With a corded version I'd love a female USB jack instead of a permanent hard wire - this way I can use whatever length cable I want. Speaking for myself only, a standard scroll wheel I could use for single-plane cursor movement (in addition to the ring and trackball) would be sweet. If it's a barrel-shaped thumb scroll wheel like on the MX Master it would be even better - this feature alone would be a "take my money" situation. Anyway congrats on the success of the first edition, I'm looking forward to watching this progress.

    Personally im not a fan of having 5 different cpi/dpi settings, its like having 20 settings for opening the sunroof on my car, I just want at most 3 but probably just 2, low and "normal", is there a way to just switch between 2 settings and ignore the other 3 ? (maybe just make a click of the button make it go to the lowest value and then another click to go back to where you were?)
    Also I take it that trackball ball is not something you actually had custom-made right? Because that would really add to the cost for no real reason, but the trackman marble's / Kensington Orbit ball is 40mm sooo where did you get your 38.1 mm size and can we not just order different colour versions from there?

    • @GameBallTrackball
      @GameBallTrackball  3 роки тому +2

      We had a bunch of discussions about how CPI many levels we needed. Some folks felt we needed as high as 8 settings and others wanted 3. We settled on 5 since it gives a good range and it isn't something most people will change very often. We tried go go with what we felt the majority would prefer. This all all controlled via firmware, so no way (without a hack) could you change at launch. We will be offering more firmware customization offers in the future, but I can't say when.
      You are correct, trackball balls are not custom made, and we are buying them from a major supplier. We decided on the ball size pretty early on. We tested a bunch of sizes from our supplier and settled on the 38mm size. It was what they team felt gave us the best overall fit for our needs. To be honest, the ball color issue didn't come up until much later, and we had already finalized the core design. In hindsight, you are right in thinking it would have made sense to use a more standard ball size. It was simply how our design cycle went. I hope this helps answer your questions.

      @@GameBallTrackball thanks for the fast and excellent response, personally I am still interested in the product but I will hold off a bit until (if) I can modify the dpi/cpi switching, for gaming especially its just something I find myself doing a lot, some quick precision on low dpi and then resuming to what i defined as normal as a relationship between the game/program sensitivity setting and my mouse's setting.
      Having to hold the button to go from for example 3 to 0 and then afterwards holding it again to get from 0 to 3 all the while paying attention to the light blinking to know I did not accidently pass it is just not going to work for me,
      I currently use a elecom trackbal atm and it has a little dpi switch slider on the top that I constandly use, but like I said, if a simple press of the sensitivity button would allow me to switch between lowest possible and current setting, that would be perfect, ill keep my eye on this product and see what the future holds, big thanks though, happy to see the passion for a product like this!
