Now you have seen me last few days asking questions haha thanks. One more. I'm planning on purchasing UR12 after watching your video. Is UR12 able to handle midi keyboard as well? Also, when you connected Tendak to the UR22C, I'm assuming you used usb A to usb C. If UR12 works with midi, I'm assuming I will need to use usb A to usb mini(?) Or whatever it's called?
Hey there. So the UR12 doesn’t have direct MIDI support. If you’re using USB MIDI keyboards you just connect these as separate devices to the powered hub. You can then use them together when recording as I show in the video. The Steinberg UR22C has MIDI in and out if you’re using an older style MIDI keyboard - ua-cam.com/video/2BW1tqOqJ9k/v-deo.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic I ended up purchasing UR22C. Based on your video, now I will need usb b to usb a cable (for MIDI from keyboard to the hub) and usb a (3.0) to usb c (from hub to UR22C) to connect like you did. Hopefully I won’t run into any problem!
Hello there! Thank you for this video! Just wanted to confirm... then I couldn't use.. for example... my Shure MVi or Shure MV7 in the USB C port of my hub... and a iRig portable guitar interface at the same time to record my guitar and vocals? I would need ie. a Scarlett 2i2, if I wanted to record vocals and guitar at the same time on my ipad?
That’s correct. Only one device can act as the audio in and out at a time, so you’d need a device that accepts guitar and mic input like the iRig Duo, and use an XLR mic, or just swap them when you need each one. studiolivetoday.com/usb
Thank you 🙏🏼. I wanted to confirm my suspensions. I’ll be picking up a Scarlett when I need guitar and vocals. Thank you so much for your response and your videos. They have been helpful as they deal specifically with the type of set I go for - iOS and GarageBand.

Depends on the software you’re using. GarageBand for instance doesn’t support a lot of external MIDI controls but other apps do. I would ask over at the GarageBand Users or Create Record Release Facebook groups.
No. iOS only supports one USB audio input/output device at once. ua-cam.com/video/OzX6jbTm0Hc/v-deo.html

@@PeteJohnsMusic that sucks. I make an podcast with two Yeti (was the cheapest option). But I would like to get an tablet instead of a laptop. So this is a dealbreaker.
Hi Pete, great video! Can I use an alternative device for the Apple Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter as it is not available from Amazon. Can you give me a link? Greetings from the Netherlands.
Hey there my friend. In my experience the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter is the only one that works reliably. I have links over in my gear guide. studiolivetoday.com/gear
Hi Peter…. Your videos have been a great guide to using GarageBand with IPad. I’ve recently started recording my band at rehearsal with the Beringer Uphoria 8 channel interface with some very promising results. Question. Is it possible to add a second interface to increase amount of mics / channels I can record simultaneously…??
I'm trying to use the same connection system as in this video, I even use an interface that you indicated in another video of yours, but I can't use 2 controllers with the music apps. I wanted independent sounds for each controller. How do I do it? The best sound apps aren't separating the midi channels, i.e. they're playing the sounds on the 2 controllers.
Hi Pete! Thank you for your help! Excuse me, but I have a question. I bought the original Apple lightning /usb3 adapter like yours! Can I use an unpowered usb hub to connect a Nektar Impact lx25+ and a Yamaha mg10xu? (yamaha has its own power supply). Thank you 🧡
Hey there. So, this may work, especially if you are plugged in to power in the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter. A powered hub is still my recommendation however to be sure.
I asked this before but now i'm a little bit more confused. My sisters and I (4 of us) want to have a home based podcast. I was planning on telling them to purchase USB mikes thinking it would be easier with the interface set up. However your last comment was that you cannot have more than 1 USB mike connected to the Interface at a time. It will be 4 of us ladies how should be go about recording for the podcast? Or do you suggest we start off with a youtube channel instead. Even so how should we go about recording our voices and having visuals? Thank you for your help.
Hey there! Yes, USB microphones can really only be used one at a time. What you would need instead is an audio interface or a mixer and an XLR microphone for each of you. I’m loving my ZOOM L-8 recorder at the moment as this allow you to record up to six mics at once. ua-cam.com/video/ty9nEhDtmPg/v-deo.html A more simple and affordable option is the Samson MixPad which I used previously. ua-cam.com/video/1VC1Dho7nh0/v-deo.html What sort of budget are you looking at for this? Al of my gear recommendations for interfaces and microphones are over at my gear guide studiolivetoday.com/gear.
@@PeteJohnsMusic im trying not to ask for more than 100$ per person which is why i thought maybe i should start off with a UA-cam channel instead because with a podcast we would have to pay for a subscription. Do you still suggest having individual mikes when recording for a youtube video. We are all pretty loud.
Outstanding video Pete! Question: does the Tendak USB hub also charge your iPad when connected using the Apple adapter? If not is there a way too do so? TY
Yes. The Tendak hub has a power only port on the front too. Just connect this to the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter. Http://studiolivetoday.com/usb
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks. I plug my Modal synths in to use their app but cable noise is a real issue. I thought putting distance between the source and the connection might make the issue better or worse depending as you say on the quality of the equipment.

Hi nice setup but I am confused. Why do I need the USB to Lightning adapter? Wouldn’t it be possible to connect the iPad directly to the hub with the regular Lignhning data cable, which comes with the iPad and which has an USB A plug? Or is the adapter really necessary so that the digital data can come through? What’ am I missing?
Pete Johns Hi thanks. Do you mean it is a smart adapter with some electronics inside and not merely a « dumb » adapter replacing the Lightning socket by an USB A socket?
So I assume you can use a normal electric keyboard as long as it has the USB B port on it. Would you be able to record the piano and vocals at the same time?
Hi Pete... Thank you for your videos. I tried connecting my USB hub to my iPhone through the white lighting device but the light of the hub keeps tripping off and it won't connect. I had to connect the hub directly to a socket and then connect my audio interface directly to my phone. How do I add a keyboard since the hub isn't directly connected to my phone but to a power socket?
Hi there. Make sure you are using a powered hub and genuine Apple Lightning to USB adapter. This video might help - ua-cam.com/video/Sc-_LiuqiRA/v-deo.html
Not sure sorry as I don’t use Android. But the interface is class compliant so doesn’t need drivers to run, which means it should be compatible with most platforms.

Hi, thanks for the content. Been following you for the past week. Very helpful. One question: I can’t get my setup to work on instagram live etc. it is just working when recording in certain apps. Any suggestion how to make my studio available live in instagram ?
Yeah, some iOS apps default back to the built in mic and don’t like USB audio for some reason. I’ll continue testing these in the future but it can vary across different appsz
Pete I have all the same stuff from this vid but I have the m-audio mini32 and my iPad is 2020 pro so my usb adaptor is newer. I can’t hear any sound through headphones when I have is set up like this. Is there a setting in garageB I have to change ? If I plug the keyboard into the USB to iPad, it plays fine, but when I plug it into the usb hub there is no souls through the steinburg. Thoughts? Anyone can answer!
Hey there. You’ll either need an audio interface or something like this to monitor the sound - ua-cam.com/video/wpu9EOTyur4/v-deo.html The headphone jack won’t work if you have any audio input/output device connected.
Can you actually also connect a HDMI device as well? The lightningport would be able to output HDMI, but I am wondering if both (USB and HDMI) can be used at the same time?
Hey there. I haven’t found a way to connect any other device at the same time as the HDMI adapter unfortunately. I believe this may be possible with an iPad Pro Gen 3 which uses USB-C, but lightning doesn’t work.
Alas no. I’ve tried before and they all only provide one port which is data compatible. The other is power only. I think this is a limitation of the Apple lightning standard that there is no way to send multiple Lightning based data signals. At least that’s been my experience. Would be very happy to be proven wrong however!!

Just qwant to be able to hear it more clearly and in real time or as much as possible no latency while using midi keyboard if possible.
would u like to tell me about app u used on ipad and same app for andriod thanks
Hey there. I’m using GarageBand which is only available for iOS or Mac unfortunately. studiolivetoday.com/garageband
Ok, I finally got the powered usb hub just now. 😂. I had an unpowered one but I will give that away. Lol. Thanks, Pete!
Nice one Ken. It’s definitely a game changer.
iPad Gen 9 can be used to make music with the audio interface?

how cool,I got an Alesis IOMix iPadmixer and M Audio Ozone controllkeyboard with 24/96khz I/O but wanted to record apart from it..this powered hub can help me out with some situations..great job!

@@PeteJohnsMusic hi can I connect up to 4 USB audio/midi sources on this hub if I understood this well?so up to 8 tracks of sound?
Hey! Thanks for the video. Very informative. I have a quick question. If I want to connect a keyboard to an iPad and hear the sound through an external amplifier, should I connect the amplifier to the audio outputs of an audio interface, which is also connected to the iPad?
Yes. Basically, you want to plug everything in to the iPad and have monitoring on, then connect the audio outputs to your speakers. Http://studiolivetoday.com/gear
Your tutorials are so good. Thank you so much!
You’re very welcome my friend. Appreciate you taking the time to comment. 👍
Is there a way to add a vocal auto tune device into this setup iPad ?…
You could insert a hardware device in the vocal chain. Or use an app or the built in tuning in your DAW.
Curious to know if your tendak works on your iPad pro 2020.
Hey there. It does, but I need to use the USB-C to USB-A adapter you get this done. Trying some others soon and will be making videos about these.
is what you are doing there also supplying power to the iPad so that it stays charged??
Hey there. If you use the Tendak powered hub (or similar) and the Lightning to USB 3 adapter you can use the dedicated charging port to power your iPad or iPhone. ua-cam.com/video/Sc-_LiuqiRA/v-deo.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic thank you sir.. i had that camera kit adapter.. but i haven't used it in so long i don't what rock i put in under.. (i bought another version of it on amazon, that has 3. Good luck my friend!!
Thank you very much for your help. Just want to ask you if can I install some vst plugins as well if I using iPhone 11. I I want to install Korg triton vst in GarageBand
Hey there. Only AUv3 plugins are supported by iOS sorry. studiolivetoday.com/freeau
Would I be able to play 2 separate keyboards with this method?
No unfortunately. I believe GarageBand iOS only support one MIDI input device at a time. studiolivetoday.com/garageband
@@PeteJohnsMusic ah I figured so… thank you!!!
How do you charge the ipad? I have seen a charging usb to lightning port on the usb expander like you are showing.
You’ll need the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter so you can charge your iPad at the same time. ua-cam.com/video/gwNqV1W3fPU/v-deo.html
Is it possible to have two audio interfaces connected at the same time to an iPad? Thanks
Hey there my friend. Unfortunately not I’m afraid. iOS can only accept one input and output source at a time. You would need to go for an interface which supports the number of interfaces you need like this one - ua-cam.com/video/l3xDq-bnwK8/v-deo.html
So you have to have a mixer to hear the sound? In addition to the interface, or did you say that by mistake? Are the speakers attached to the audio interface?
Hey there. Yes, you’ll need some sort of audio device if your iPhone or iPad doesn’t have a headphone jack. This video will help. ua-cam.com/video/wpu9EOTyur4/v-deo.html
How would this work for sending live sound from all this to a zoom meeting or another live streaming app on iOS?
I personally use a mixer for this as it’s the easiest way I’ve found to combine audio sources. ua-cam.com/video/l-kyLBAp0Uk/v-deo.html
Now i can see clearly that i can record acoustic drum with my Ipad 8th gen. in some way. Thanks for great info

@@PeteJohnsMusic I am already subscribed my friend.I don't know why but i still have little doubts about multitracking drums with my 3gb RAM Ipad. For example if i have (planning to buy:)) Zoom 8 and my ipad only;will i have multitracks for my drums on Garageband or only stereo send (zoom 8 also has this mode) of tracks?
What cable did you use to connect your hub to the interface? One end was usb a but didn’t get to see the other end. Thank you for your video!
This video will show it more clearly. ua-cam.com/video/Sc-_LiuqiRA/v-deo.html
Hi, can this process be used for live looping performances?
Yup, if you’re using the right software/app it provides the audio input/output that you’ll need.
Hi Pete,
Love your videos! Thanks for your effort in making them!
I am trying to connect 2 Behringer UMC404HD Interfaces with no success. The only thing I can think of is my USB 2.0 powered hub is not enough. I can run 1 interface but not 2… I basically trying to get 8 channels from two identical 4ch interfaces.😢
Hey there. Unfortunately iOS only supports one audio input and output at once, so you’d need an interface with more inputs if you want more than 2/4.
Can you put USB 64 Lexar for storing pictures on it to transfer your pictures from your iPad to this usb storage device.
Yup. This video will help/ ua-cam.com/video/FcwIv7zZ7J8/v-deo.html
Great video. Does this setup charge the ipad?
If you use the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter and plug in to AC power, a battery or a hub then yes you can.
I’m in love with your channel thanks and keep this good content up :)

Hi im looking to run a setup like this but on android. Can u do a video using an android phone instead? Really could use the help
Android is a little trickier as there are so many different variants of hardware and software. Much of the information is the same, but you'll need a USB-C adapter instead of Lightning - ua-cam.com/video/3Zyb1ISy3wk/v-deo.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks. I already have a usb-c 8 in 1 hub and a normal 7 in 1 powered usb hub and the website says thats all i really need but i was hoping to see a demonstration of this being implemented but since android producers are rare and most smartphone producers use apple, if you could atleast do a test run with a similar setup for me and explain it, itd really help me out alot
Thanks for taking the time to explain. Much appreciated.
You’re very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
Hi Pete, great vid. Hope you can help me. I want to add the meloaudio midi commander (foot controller) so I can use with bias fx2 . I have the irig micro amp with built in audio interface, which I connect my guitar to. Would this set up be possible your method... thanks
Depends on the software you’re using. GarageBand for instance doesn’t support a lot of external MIDI controls but other apps do. I would ask over at the GarageBand Users or Create Record Release Facebook groups.
Can you connect two usb mics? Like two blue yeti?
No. iOS only supports one USB audio input/output device at once. ua-cam.com/video/OzX6jbTm0Hc/v-deo.html

Hi can you show the diagram of this complete setup?
Haven’t got one at this stage. But a good idea for a future video.
Maybe you just have a draw of the diagram and put it in the video or your website.
Do you have a recommendation for sustain pedal or is the sustain in Garage Band ok
Any sustain pedal that has a polarity switch and a standard 1/4” adapter will work great.
This is great! Quick question, does the iPad charge as it's plugged in or do you send in a separate power source for iPad?
There’s a few options for this. Check out the links here for more info. studiolivetoday.com/usb.
When I plug my interface in it doesn’t work
Bummer! Make sure you’re using a genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter. studiolivetoday.com/usb

Hey there. For live performance and recording I tend to prefer a mixer. ua-cam.com/video/vBectYpoVIY/v-deo.html

Can i use a single usb apple ligtning cable instead of the cckit?
Generally not. It won’t create the right USB bridge unless you use the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter. studiolivetoday.com/usb
@@PeteJohnsMusic is genuine Apple cable in one extreme is lightning in the other is usb enter
I have a question. When you record piano playing using midi, is that stereo or mono?
Depends on the virtual instrument and settings. Usually stereo. All tracks in GarageBand are stereo. Other DAWs, just make sure stereo is set.
Hi Peter…. Your videos have been a great guide to using GarageBand with IPad. I’ve recently started recording my band at rehearsal with the Beringer Uphoria 8 channel interface with some very promising results. Question. Is it possible to add a second interface to increase amount of mics / channels I can record simultaneously…??
Hey there. Not in iOS I’m afraid. iOS can only use one input and output device at a time. studiolivetoday.com/usb
Would this work if I want to record only my voice in the camera app of the iPhone?
Yup. Any apps including the camera will work with a USB mic or a microphone plugged in via an audio interface.
GarageBand doesn’t let you use multiple MIDI controllers. Logic Pro might? But haven’t tried it. Http://logicipad.com/

@@PeteJohnsMusic thank you, see you on your next Studio live! :)
Thank you for your help.
we are recording all of this on an Iphone if that helps.
Hey there! Yes, USB microphones can really only be used one at a time. What you would need instead is an audio interface or a mixer and an XLR microphone for each of you. I’m loving my ZOOM L-8 recorder at the moment as this allow you to record up to six mics at once. ua-cam.com/video/ty9nEhDtmPg/v-deo.html
A more simple and affordable option is the Samson MixPad which I used previously. ua-cam.com/video/1VC1Dho7nh0/v-deo.html
What sort of budget are you looking at for this?
Al of my gear recommendations for interfaces and microphones are over at my gear guide studiolivetoday.com/gear.
@@PeteJohnsMusic im trying not to ask for more than 100$ per person which is why i thought maybe i should start off with a UA-cam channel instead because with a podcast we would have to pay for a subscription. Do you still suggest having individual mikes when recording for a youtube video. We are all pretty loud.

Hi. Great video. In this setup if I buy a usb mic than I don’t need interface, only when I want to connect 2 mic or guitar ?
Yup. You’ll only need an interface for a guitar or XLR mic.
Does this reduce USB noise?
Hey there. A decent quality USB hub can ensure you don’t get any interference or issues. studiolivetoday.com/usb
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks. I plug my Modal synths in to use their app but cable noise is a real issue. I thought putting distance between the source and the connection might make the issue better or worse depending as you say on the quality of the equipment.

Hey there. I use KRK Rokits. You can check out links over on my gear guide - studiolivetoday.com/gear

How is the latency with this setup?
I've personally never had any issue with latency? There is always going to be some, but there is not too much in my experince.
Hey there. Yes, the Lightning to USB adapter is required to create the proper host that can transfer data and power.
Pete Johns Hi thanks. Do you mean it is a smart adapter with some electronics inside and not merely a « dumb » adapter replacing the Lightning socket by an USB A socket?
I learn so much from you! Thanks for sharing your knowledge :-)

Hey there. You’ll either need an audio interface or something like this to monitor the sound - ua-cam.com/video/wpu9EOTyur4/v-deo.html
The headphone jack won’t work if you have any audio input/output device connected.
Hi pete please help can i connect at2020 usb+ to a v8 live sound card or f8 live soundcard?
No. USB mics have their own built in audio interface and therefore can't be connected to another interface.
@@PeteJohnsMusic I have seen these lightning port splitters, maybe that works?
Alas no. I’ve tried before and they all only provide one port which is data compatible. The other is power only. I think this is a limitation of the Apple lightning standard that there is no way to send multiple Lightning based data signals. At least that’s been my experience. Would be very happy to be proven wrong however!!
