  • Hay River has the worst flood on record!
    Public Notice
    Hay River Flood Update
    Thursday May 12 2pm
Wednesday evening an evacuation order for the entire community of Hay River was issued as a large push came through town resulting in significant flooding throughout the community. This included the downtown core, Riverview Drive, Cranberry Crescent, Vale Island, and many other riverfront properties. Hay River Fire Department crews were dispatched to provide a high number of rescue operations.
Yellowknife and Fort Smith are serving as host communities for the town wide evacuation. Those travelling to Yellowknife should report to the Yellowknife Multiplex at 41 Kam Lake Road. Access to camping facilities is also being made available to evacuees at Louise Falls Campground, Escarpment Creek Campground, and at the Kakisa Campground.
A significant ice jam is still within the northern portion of the community boundaries. Ice is broken and packed from both the West and East Channels to Delancey Estates. Water levels are again rising at this time and causing more flooding. Remaining pushes are anticipated to cause more flooding through the community. As such emergency crews are continuing to focus on response activities and the evacuation order remains in place. Entry into the community is restricted to emergency and essential services.
The town will fully shift from response to recovery activities once the breakup risk has reduced and hazards tied to the flooding have been mitigated. A preliminary hazard assessment is being undertaken to fully inventory risks that will need to be corrected before an eventual return of evacuees to the community. The Town’s wastewater system has been heavily compromised with over 50% of residents without functional piped sewer services. Several road systems have been washed out or under water or have hazardous ice on them. Some areas of town are without power including the area of the Water Treatment Plant. The airport is only available for emergency access.
Given compromised wastewater and water treatment services, residents that did not evacuate are asked to conserve water. A boil water advisory has been issued for Hay River. See www.hss.gov.nt.ca/en/services... for more details.
An agent for the GNWT is expected to arrive in Hay River on Friday. They will assist in the recovery process for residents and businesses. More information will follow.
The Town will communicate with evacuees as soon as more information is known. This is a difficult time for our community. Please remember that people today are tired, worried and under a lot of stress. Be kind to one another. Take actions that are productive to getting through this together.

Mikey-you, your family, and your neighbors are in my thoughts and prayers. I understand what y’all are going through, floods are common here in Houston, Texas. Things may be a mess now, but I know from personal experience that y’all will rebuild and Hay River will be back better than ever. The important thing is that everyone is safe!

Thoughts and prayers to the people in Hay River. I lived in Rainbow Lake for a few years in the early 2000's - and everyone who lives in the Canadian North has my deepest respect. Mother Nature is an unforgiving mistress, and it takes a special breed of person to contend with her on a daily basis as those up there do. Stay warm and stay safe!

Best of luck to everyone affected. I was just reading a story about someone who bought a house off the North Carolina coast nine months ago, and it just washed away into the ocean. Another story I read a week ago about the water level in Lake Powell being so low that the Hoover dam may not be able to generate electricity soon. It’s within about 50 feet of being at too low level for the hydroelectric plant to operate.
I think we should all start listening to the scientists more. This climate change is going to affect all people on this planet, sooner then we think!
I hope the water in the Hay River Recedes very soon and people have minimal damage and can get back to normal soon!

Up until a few years ago we lived along a major river and ice jams would flood much of the valley, depending where the ice jam was. I remember as a kid when the "ice went out" as the adults called it, you could hear it. They use to dynamite some pars of the jam up, a very dangerous thing to do, sometimes it worked.
