    Hi, I really appreciate the content you are putting out here :). If I may ask, why did you decide to use the combination of fan + generator to dry your mushrooms? Wouldn't it be more economical to dry in an enclosed trailer of some sort using the available ressource that is wood to feed a wood stove? I'm very curious about that choice! Thanks again for the great content!

    • @northernwildharvest
      @northernwildharvest  Рік тому +2

      Thanks for the comment Raphael. Airflow is the most important aspect to drying at first. Adding heat to fresh/wet morels too early will cook them instead of dehydrating. The goal is to reach between 70-80% dry with cool to warm air before adding higher heat. The higher airflow will help seal the mushrooms and help prevent the morels from sporing onto each other. Then they are moved to the woodstove to flash which finishes them off.
      We are using the woodstove room for two purposes. When we’re not flashing we use the woodstove room to dry out the air being pulled through the dryer, the warmed air allows us to pull more moisture out of the mushrooms. this helps a lot when it is foggy and humid out. Our fan is powerful enough to cool down that same air so that it doesn’t add too much heat, while still drying the air without cooking the mushrooms. Then when they are ready we flash them on the rack above the stove which finishes the drying and kills any insect related contamination if there is any.
      Hope this answers your question, we plan to do a video in the future to go into depth on this topic. We have made multiple trailer dryers before and they work well as the chassis for a dryer but the same principles should still be applied.

      @@northernwildharvest thank you very much, it does answer my question very well. I had previously been told that air dry could be used for around 2 hours prior to drying at low heat (maybe heat equivalent to what the sun provides on a hot day), which would prevent too much spore circulation in the early stage of drying yes, but also so the mushroom doesn't shrink as much after the drying process is done (as opposed to just a prolonged exposure to around 30 degrees celcius through the whole process without air drying at first). Maybe it's hard with a wood stove to get this very low and controlled heat for a prolonged period of time... Any final thoughts on this? And what would be the approximate temperature for final flashing? I'm sorry for having such long questions. These are the last ones I promise :)

    • @northernwildharvest
      @northernwildharvest  Рік тому +2

      @@raphaellafontaine2410 the timing all depends on the stage and how wet the mushrooms are. If it’s hot and dry out and the morels haven’t been rained on or they aren’t late growth stages then sometimes 2 hours is enough, other times it’s not. The little dryer were using in this video has a really high airflow to speed things up and prevent as much loss of biomass as possible. We do slowly add heat as they dry by controlling the woodstove but it’s all about finding the balance - too much heat too early will increase sporing. The sooner you stop the spore from being able to escape the mushroom the more they will keep their shape and retain their biomass which results in a better fresh to dry ratio. Approx temp for flashing is between 135f and 175f.
      The generator we’re using is very fuel efficient and the fans we use don’t have too much power draw considering their airflow/CFM. Small electric heaters have a really high power draw per btu (heat.) So the woodstove is still a great addition to the drying setup. With a small setup for the five of us, It would be far to expensive to rent a generator large enough to run a heater that could match the btu of the woodstove. Plus, like you said, the wood fuel is readily available!

      @@mmmmmray We travel all over Canada when harvesting, majority mushrooms but we also harvest many different plants or non-timber forest resources but morels are usually the biggest harvest of the year. We try to only harvest things that are sustainable, and travel a lot to make sure we are in areas where the things we're harvesting are abundant. When not wild harvesting most of work in the trades, myself usually doing horticulture work. Grateful to have a good team to do this work with. Hope you have a great season this year Murray!
