    Thanks for the info on this mod. I just did another one using your instructions. My radio is the Sangean ATS 818. Lifting a leg of D29 also fixed the tuning mute issue on this model. It's so much nicer to tune across the band now.

    Has worked on two DX-390s and an ATS-818CS (DX-392 w/cassette deck)
    Since 1992...

    Thanks very much for being so concise with regards the mod on the mute on the tuning
    set up on the DX390, I have just got hold of a DX390 unit for listening to around the house and in the garden for general listening across the broadcast spectrum, LW, MW, FM, SW it's good to know that there are people still out there who enjoy listening to there radio and what it still has to offer in this Computer Hi-Tec world of discard and throw away.
    If there is anybody out there who would like to comment on further modification to the DX390, please feel free to do so.

    TNX for sharing MUTE modification. I found an almost brand new Siemens RK675 , and disabled MUTE and disabled BEEP, much better for tuning over the bands. 73 Marc

    I had my DX 390 since 92 that useless search mute is a big pain, I will be doing this mod for sure. Thanks for the info.

    Just recently bought a DX-390 off my brother in near mint condition. Very worth while mod, thanks for sharing and detailed instructional video. Although I wished MW sensitivity was better without having to use a pasive loop or external antenna. I expected a bit better off the ferrit bar. I'm going to have a look at the service manaul to see if it can be improved.

    Thanks for showing how to not cut the wire.
    The DX-350 as a note,has a far superior am ferrite antenna,more like the top end sonys do.

    I did the mod last night. Makes finding stations during rapid tuning much easier. After I did the mod and put the batteries back in, it didn't power on and gave strange numbers in the display. After letting it sit overnight without batteries, it was fine this morning.

      +wildbill9919 I forgot to mention I was able to cut the green wire without taking the green circuit board off. I was able to get in there with a small set of wire cutters.

      +wildbill9919 I have heard of people saying the mod can sometimes confuse the microprocessor temporarily. You should also check out the light mod I did on the unit as I saw you were having an issue with that as well.

    If anyone is wondering, this is not the same mod for the DX-392 (cassette version). I'm still searching for the correct mod on the 392..Anyone find one?

      My Sangean ATS-818CS has a quite different motherboard from my two DX-390s.
      The components are arranged differently and the circuit paths are too!
      And the codes are different
      The broads WILL interchange!
      Flat leads, etc. connect up..

    I sold mine on Ebay in 2006 for 56 dollars with original box and manual, it was a good shortwave radio with an exterior antenna, and the AM reception was terrible, at least in my radio.

    • @eccosselion
      @eccosselion 6 років тому

      Your AM problem is down to man-made noise in and around your house such as computers and such like being passed through the electrical wiring of the house which shows up on your radio as noise, try and use it on batteries on its own and see if that makes any difference to the AM performance on your radio.

      @@eccosselion Are you sure is not part of the "frontend blow-up" problem this model is famous for? I just bought one on ebay and on AM is very insensitive (doesn't get 650 am from nashville, i'm in NE ATL, my pocket panasonic easily gets) And SW is completely dead. Do you and The Active Region, have any idea what could be wrong with mine?

    Just unplug the connector, lift the plastic tab which holds the contact, remove the contact and put heat shrink tube on it. This is how I've done it, it is reversible without a soldering iron. Although I don't know why anybody in their right mind would want to reverse this mod, but anyways...

    Inverse parallel 1n4148 on both antennas rod and jackj.

    • @mrnmrn1
      @mrnmrn1 11 місяців тому

      The antiparallel 4148 seems a bit too capacitive to me, it might block a good portion of the RF. I would suggest an RF surge arrester cartridge instead, they are cheap in Chinese webshops. It's a tiny MELF package, which is a replacement cartritge for SMA surge protectors. And one of them is enough, just put it after the changeover switch in the 3.5mm jack, so it protects both the external antenna input and the telescopic antenna.

    To me it would be easier to cut the trace with a razor blade right at the diode connection...or remove the connector and unlock the green wire and pull the green wire out of the connector...and it tape it off...that way you can reinsert in the wire if you want to..

    How do you turn off the timer that turns the radio on at specific times on this model? If anyone could help I greatly appreciated thank you

    Is there any reason not to simply cut the wire if you are certain you will not wish to reverse the mod?

    • @The_Active_Region

      I don't see why not. You can always solder it back together
