I prefer it with the wire clipped. However, I love the idea of a switch on the back of the set. It's the best of both worlds in my mind.

I suspect the wire is part of the AGC circuit and the switch idea might cause a problem if it's activated with the radio on. RS had
real good service manuals and it would be nice to look at the schematic to see what part of the circuit the wire is used in. Thanks
    for the review.

I prefer performance with the Wire clipped (much smoother tuning) but as an alternative to a switch how about a variable resistor? that way you could tailor the mute Vs. noise effect to your most acceptable compromise...

I don't call cutting a wire really a mod. I like muting while tuning better. But it's up to the individual's ear which effect they actually like. I think the switch idea is also doable.

I know this is old but couldn't resist. No pun intended. Personally, having already getting this far, I would either add a mono 3/32 plug and receptacle or the like. Maybe add an external switch to activate said circuit.

You could drill a hole in the back panel and install a switch. I don't know if it makes that much of a difference to be worth it or not. I would need to play with it some more to decide. Could you tune in some stations with voice or music and then tune around the so we can hear the effects of the mod better? Thanks.

I listened to it both ways after the show and I am still on the fence.

I would just put a high cut filter in it for the noise. Mike's radio repair has a video on doing them on cb radios. Its a simple capacitor from the volume control to ground.

You could extend the wires and add a small switch to turn it on and off.

I think I mentioned that idea.

It seems to me, if you are dx-ing low sig stations by ear you need the mod. I do not see why some one would want the VFO to mute when in use. Very good video. Thanks

I think the switch idea is a good idea, particularly if the signal is weak and in the noise.

I agree with you Tom, in this case it seems like the MWT function is not to big an issue with this radio. But I agree the manufacturers should allow the consumer to chose MWT on or off to their liking. A cheap way to please everyone.

I had that Lowbander guy do a few mods on mine which is the first model non a or b ..... He did the mod you did, added some foil tape in the case to reduce stray RF,did his listed NB mod but it overloads and distorts the audio with it on when receiving strong signals, also do you get a power supply hum with the radio on and volume off at all?Mine does that ..... I can always tell if I forgot to shut it off cause I can hear the hum ... 73

      No hum from mine.

No hum from mine sometimes the transformer coil or laminations may be a little loose. Try plugging in a different supply via the external power jack a cb power supply would do

I think that even though the audio is not muted, the synthesizer is still going in 5 khz steps. So it is only a chance that you will catch a signal going by 5 MHz (in this case)... Think that if this were my radio, would leave it unmodified.
