    Honda downplays the numbers on the J35 (specifically, the J35Y2). It's producing close to or more than 300hp at the crank. I used to think the J35 was seriously an underwhelming engine until you realize engines like the VQ35 and Toyota's V6, the 2GR are running DOHC, a more advanced variable valve time system, higher compression numbers, direct fuel injection, and yet, the J35 still meets or exceeds their performance numbers with low compression (10:1), SOHC, relative V-TEC system, low r.pm. (6800 r.p.m.), and port-injection. If Honda were to employ DOHC, increase the compression numbers, add port/direct injection, a more advanced variable valve timing, and increase the redline (8000 r.p.m.), I have no doubt the J35 could easily 350+ whp (410 at the crank). However, having that much technology in a Honda V6 would increase the cost considerably. The J35 is an incredible well built engine that clearly shows how Honda doesn't have to overly complicate engine technology to meet or exceed their rivals. On the other hand, it would be nice if Honda did release Type-R variant of the J35. A nice good bye to show the world what Honda can do with NA V6.

      Meh, not really always the case. There's a saying in engineering that the simpler you can keep things, the better.
      American terms, modernize a simple design that works. GM kept improving upon the small block push rod V8 engines such as the LS series. While Ford wanted to change the envelope as much as they can, pushing the next best design out always such as the DOHC 32V V8 Coyote. They both make the same horsepower but one is much simpler.

      One of the best surprises of my life was my 2004 Saturn VUE with the J35 engine. I got rid of it at 235,000 miles as no one could figure out why my AC clutch had a mind of its own. (I should have dug deeper, as it WAS fixable). I used Mobil 1 with 10,000 intervals for my oil changes and it never leaked nor used oil. Not a drop.
      I now have the J35Y in my 2015 CrossTour and, well, I'm just not sure I'll ever have another car without a J35Y engine. (My vanity license plate on my CT is "J35Y 278" to represent the engine type and horsepower.)
      I think Honda did us all a disservice by removing this engine's availability from the Accord. Toyota was smart for keeping their V6 availibility for their Camry line up.

    I think I've done well with the parts mixing: J35A1 block, crank and rods, J32A2 pistons, heads and cams, J37A2 intake manifold, FBO, like, literally everything, I think, and a J32A2 ECU. The car is a beast, but I blew the differential in my B7WA transmission recently. Don't know whether it was just a bad diff, or it's too weak by design for this kind of motor. Anyone know whether a differential from an old Honda Odyssey is any more durable?

      Back in the spo-com years (mid 1990s to mid 2000s) there were a lot of aftermarket companies making car body styling parts, many of them made hoods with either vents, cowls or even taller that mimics hoods for American cars with tall engines. Too bad all them went out of the market.
      However I think with some creativity maybe the scoops available for the Imprezas can be put on the civics hoods and make that hole less noticeable.

    You forgot about VCM. VCM is present in many J35s and has caused some issues. Some VCM J35 engines are also prone to premature camshaft wear.

    • @Npc5150
      @Npc5150 3 роки тому +2

      That camshaft wear was due to the rocker shaft bridge being torqued incorrectly from the factory. There was a TSB about it. Either way, VCM was always a load of unnecessary problems (keyword being unnecessary). There is another common issue with J series rear bank cams being spalled. That seems like a valve clearance or oil supply issue (to the head). You'll find a LOT of J series that "tick" and it sounds like a valve issue, but NOBODY knows what the sound is. It's not valves, because the noise isn't present for the first 15 seconds after startup. I've found countless people with this issue. Also, the original service manual scheduled valve lash adjustments for "when noisy." Major mistake. Other shops have found that valve lash adjustments were necessary after only 20K miles on most J series.

    • @wiimaster2847
      @wiimaster2847 3 роки тому +4

    Sorry, had to give a thumbs down for not mentioning VCM problems, timing belt and cam pitting. Best bet is disable VCM via one of the many easy to install aftermarket devices, unless you don't mind burning ~qt oil ever 1000 miles, going through cat converters and engine mounts more often. Nothing you can do about timing belt beside changing every 105K miles and hope the tensioner doesn't fail in between TB changes, in which case engine is gone. Engine from a so called quality make like Honda should have timing chain, not belt. Honda cams suffer pitting wiithout the zinc levels oils of yesteryear had. Don't expect Honda to fix any of this on future years of this engine. There will be no more R&D to improve this engine given direction industry is going with hybrids and electric vehicles.
