I second the commenters who think this is DEVO taking the piss out of disco and roller rinks and maybe even everyone up to the Stones recording a disco album; why not DEVO? The Meat Puppets would get run off stage for their long hair. If that didn't do it, their Journey covers would. Same principle. cf. "I Need A Chick" on "Live: The Mongoloid Years" To the loyal spud who found this gem .. how?
nice find - sounds like a formative jam on the idea. nothing compares to the paradigm shift that the album version represented to ears in situ in 1980 though....
no, i love this, but a band with variety and taking risks with styles is better than a band who sticks to one sound. how amazing is it to be a band that can't be categorized into one genre? im so glad they have done all that they've done! And the fact they have all their other songs makes this one hold its own more! devo is timeless and have gone in countless directions, like the beatles, thats why they are incredible and important, and why there is always more to discover of them :)
Vivzid The correct word is album, not cd, just as it is incorrect to use record in that context as people do. Those are formats. The album, or LP/EP would be correct in that sentence

It's always great to look at these "sketches" of a song. Really lets you into the creative process. I'm glad they chose to leave out the "potato, potah-to" line. I mean, they're spudboys and all, but it still seems a little out of place and cliche.
So glad they trimmed it down and added some excitement to it. This version seems like the over-indulgent rock stuff that Devo was fighting against in the first place.
WELL apparently Devo traveled 40 years into the future, did a cover of a song they did earlier, and pre-recorded it in mid 70s. I'm onto you, DEVO
This is a bit like discovering how they built the pyramids...
Fabulous. Pre-evolved DEVO.
+Marc Dacey Some say pre-devolved
absolute rarity......the roots !
Thanks Everyone
i've never, ever, heard this version ...... different .... that's for sure!
Jeez, this is a rare, golden potato.
I almost like this version better than the official one ....

Sounds like a Happy Mondays version circa 1990. Long live Devo!
The bassline hook was re-used in "Peek a Boo" almost ten years later
So it's not just me!
wooo this is super cool DEVO do rock n roll
I don't remember where I read this, but I believe this from 1973?
We are DEVO !!!
Just like Sister Ray says!
YES
How many groups do demos that are as cool as the stuff they put on albums?
Gorillaz, The Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop & the Stooges. Also Damon Albarn.
Synths sound like Speed of Life! Bowie was really influenced by Devo’s early recordings as well as Eno & Kraftwerk before recording Low
nice find - sounds like a formative jam on the idea.

OH WOW! HOLY SPUD GUN! This is brilliant xxoo
This is very good. Thanks for posting.
Sister Ray has entered the chat.
Not really. Rare tracks likes these are collected and made available to collectors for trade. check out BoojiBoysBasement on line.
Sister Ray Mothersbaugh , nicht wahr??
+batmite3000 I get the reference. All hail the velvet underground
7:49 another velvet underground reference, to the Black Angel's Death Song ("choose to lose")
I was thinking the same thing very VU.
The mighty Devo....👍
DEVO 4EVER
This kinda sound like home depot
Glad I ain’t the only one thinkin that
Sounds like brad neely I'm in love
When was this recorded. Im guessing 1976. Sounds like Alan behind the kit.
Sweet!
Kinda makes me think of some of the jammier bootlegs of "Sister Ray" by the Velvets that float around the net...
the world would be a better place if all DEVO songs were like this

I liked their newest cd, but i wish they would put out a cd with songs like this

Now that's some irrational anger.
Agree with yetkirby; beats the hell out of the version they put on the album.
Thanks
"You say potato, and I say potato."
SO Eno.
This sounds like it was recorded in one of the dive bars in Kent. The Cove maybe.
@BlueCollarTweeker Glad you liked it..
@TheThomasOfficial you should really consider uploading it on youtube
Can I fuggin get dis anywhere?
There are a lot of Devo experts out there. Help me out spuds, what year?
Its great to see how this stuff evolved. Pardon the pun.
They are making fun of disco- and skating rinks, I think. Therefore YAM.

When is this from? 1977?
Sounds like a stones pisstake
Stones are good but DEVO shits all over them.
Wow, this is great! Do you know the exact year this is from?
today, id just walked into the grocery, and swear to god they put FOC on the PA! I nearly died like a dog in the jelly aisle.
In the Basement.
Ha ha! If anyone could do that it would be DEVO.
three people don't want to exercise their freedom of choice...
and a 180 people do. Unfortunately that freedom of choice got us Trump
isnt that literally what their doing though?
which years was this ?
So glad they trimmed it down and added some excitement to it. This version seems like the over-indulgent rock stuff that Devo was fighting against in the first place.
Over-indulgent? What?
@PassengersMusic777 .... say that again ... slowwwwww?
🍦
sort of sounds like The Rapper by The Jaggerz
that's not a year.
Kind of reminds me of Talking Heads. If, you know, Talking Heads was better.
haha
Cool as hell to hear a bizarre early version, but it's about six minutes longer than it needed to be.
nah
this is better than devo
+scott sabo this is devo
scott sabo Delete
what year did they do this?
what year did they do this?
