On a recent AMA someone asked Jerry if he could explain this song and he replied, "I really can't. It was my music and Mark's lyrics and I never understood them when I sang them."
One of my new favorite Devo songs. I Was born in 1978 and thank God I had a brother who was already into them. I've been into Devo my entire life. I got see them a few times live, once being the Hardcore Devo show in NYC, but the one that hurt the most and was pure torture for me was in 1982 when my mom and dad took my brother and sister to see Devo in San Francisco at the Warfield theater. I cant tell you how bad I wanted to be inside that place instead of sitting in my dads van waiting to pick my brother and sister up. Devo has an Oakland California show scheduled this summer (2018) Im thinking it would be perfect for me, my brother and sister to go to that show.
(1) Devo's performance at the Eagle St. Saloon in May 25th, 1977 is a landmark in the development of Devo's unique sound. The bootleg of this show catches Devo in the middle of a transition. By this point, they've mostly left behind their art school image behind, trading it in for a simpler working class aesthetic. They perform, no longer in outlandish costumes, but in simple blue workers jumpsuits. < "Devo at the Eagle St. Saloon - May, 25th 1977" - everything 2 . com
This year at a book signing I asked Mark about the lyrics, and he told me the chorus. No, I did not check your ID No, I did not check your ID When you jumped into my playpen And then you swallowed up all my toys, all my toys He then asked if it was Booji Boy who sang it. Haha.
lyrics for this version of Nutty Buddy (jerry always mixed them up between every show so yk): Say hello to Nutty Buddy, he's the only pal you'll ever know. Say hello to Mr. Goodbar, can't you see? he's running down the road. Watch out for Nutty Buddy, can't you see? he's running on the floor (running from the gun? running from the cops? idk) Watch out for Mr. Goodbar, I think, he's straddlin' a heavy, load. [Chorus] Well I did not, check your I.D. No I did not, check your I.D. When you jumped into my playpen, I made you swallowed up, all my toys. [Chorus] *my favorite synth solo from mark here* If not for Mr. Goodbar, we'd be all dressed up and circling the town! Hey hey for Nutty Buddy, someone told him we was here! Watch out for Mr. Goodbar, he's all dressed up and circling the town! Good god (or look out) for Nutty Buddy, He's about to let his fingers through the walk-in! [Chorus x8 or something - ALL MY TOYS!!!] "thank yall... nutty buddy... :P" - sounds like Bob1 or just Jerry putting on a funny voice
I just had a sort of epiphany about this song while listening to it: It's kind of a vague prototype of "Gut Feeling." The structure is almost the same, minus the segue into another short song in "Gut Feeling" and the fact that the chorus of "Nutty Buddy" switches patterns. Both follow kind of a mid-pace tempo, the verses have a repeated pattern of five measures with muted power chords in the rhythm guitar, the song begins with a long jam involving synth arpeggios, and the song kind of gradually builds up in intensity and sonic chaos. Even the lyrical schemes match up pretty closely.

Tried my best to decipher the lyrics. Couldn't get all of it, though. Hopefully someone else can figure out the rest. I think those lyrics are mostly correct. But I believe the line to be "Can't you see, he's running from the floor". However, i'm certain that he says gun in another recording...
Still the raw, terrifying sound of the '70s nighttime bar scene we all -- those of us alive back then -- craved so much. There was a message in here, although I doubt many knew it at the time. Thank you for having posted this!
Hank Jennings - Ok, but seriously... how many people (outside of Akron and maybe NYC) even knew of DEVO’s existence before 1977? Those ‘Hardcore Devo’ early recordings weren’t even released properly until 1990. I didn’t ‘discover’ DEVO until 1979, and they pretty well blew my mind even at that point. I know I wasn’t the only one either. Maybe after 1982 or so one could make the argument that they had ‘gone commercial’, but the first 4 albums were and still are extremely relevant and have held up well over the years.
(2) While the music still retains, and always will retain, various trappings of art rock, the performance is lean and sounds more like a bar band. Oddly, Gerald V. Casale takes the lead on most songs, including the intense closing cover of Johnny Rivers' Secret Agent Man (a Devo staple.) In addition, the band performs songs that would never see an album, such as the bizarre Nutty Buddy ... and the rollocking Huboon Stomp. < "Devo at the Eagle St. Saloon - May, 25th 1977" - everything 2 . com
Anybody else hearing a similar intro as Bela Lugosi’s dead? Never heard this song til now. Not that that’s bad, by the way. I love that song! And I’ve probably listened to this one about 20 times already!

Hadn't they worn blue boiler suits at the 75 Halloween party? And weren't the yellow radiation suits, energy domes and JFK pomps pretty outlandish?
bob's guitar on this is insane!
I've been searching for a better quality version of this song for years, and I've finally found it. THANK YOU!
40 years ago tomorrow...Good Spuds...good spuds....
my new favourite Devo song!
Always loved this tune, always wondered why they never committed it to any album or release.
It is on He/She or it`s Devo.
@@callimero2010 that's a bootleg
Probably just because it sounds too much like Gut Feeling.

Love Bob 1 and Mark's individual guitar and keyboard solos.

Ya 74- 77 was the years for the spud- boys :3 After that, they became mainstream and became "cleaner"

Nutty buddy means something else now 😂good song doe
Good ol' "Nutty Buddy"- aka "Get your ID". A bootleg I heard on youtube had NB listed as "Get your ID", and I have called it that ever since.
Hank Jennings and you're incorrect
nice version, I never heard any other but the one on the He/She/Or/It's/Devo bootleg

Could so easily be a Nirvana track
Sounds like a "Blockhead" prototype, though I guess they might've been playing "Blockhead" at this point anyway?
It does sound kinda like Blockhead
Same rhythm, but completely different chord progression from ‘Blockhead’.
And yes, they were playing ‘Blockhead’ at this point.
I was wondering if this was a precursor to Blockhead. Even if they are two seperate songs, I highly suspect one DEVOlved from the other.
Jerry sure doesn't sing like that anymore!
Anyone have the lyrics?
Tell me this doesn't sound like The Rolling Stones. Okay, it doesn't.
too much bug powder the night before?
