Looking back, this is a really sad scene. Toby looks so happy. With everything he’s been through, this is the life he’s always wanted. A loving home. But it’s all a lie.
its not sad. its a terrifying scene. they’re singing about the pies being so good and theyve got alot of costumers and the costumers are just eating the pies and becoming cannibals without even realizing it. this song gives me goosebumps
She does care for the kid, but from her perspective she's got a good thing going. Her business is doing better than it ever has and she has the man she loves living upstairs. She cares for Toby, but she loves Mr. Todd more and will always choose him. You see this latter in the film when Toby tells her his suspicions about Mr. Todd, she's visibly sad that they'll have to kill Toby, but again, she's not going to risk him warning the authorities and getting herself and Mr. Todd caught.
Yeah dude it is sad that he’s happily promoting her business that wasn’t forced upon him yet he knows nothing, I kinda want to say Ms.Lovett is taking advantage of him but sees him as a potential child since he’s in her fantasy of her ideal life.
She wasn't evil at first, a poor widow with lots of debts and a crumbling business living in a slum of London, the price of meat being high, her competition already using cats as meat, I guess she touched bottom and was desperate to go up.
marissa hurtado she didn’t know who she was until she saw her dead body later, she says “you!” with honestly such a shock it makes it seems like it’s her first time seeing her.
@@thomasraines1396 Actully, in the play, is made clear Lovett was well aware that Lucy is the beggar, in fact, is subly implied in the final scene that after Lucy poisoned herself and went mad, Lovett kicked her out, and then, when Todd returned, she malicously made sure Todd would not see Lucy, so she could keep Sweeney to herself. That's the thing about Lovett, she is meant to be as guilty of Sweeney's insanity as Turpin, she ruined his life just as much. Lovett is basicily a yandere.

Jordan Ehdieb yes because species are usually a team. Don't get me wrong, I hate animals being killed but as long as they don't suffer and are used to their full extent, I'm accepting of it
No way. Sweeney Todd himself and the sailor he came to England with are both pretty great characters in my opinion. You don't have to be a "good guy" to be a great character.
A fun fact is that human flesh supposedly tastes exactly like pork, but the flavor is stronger. So the customers are even less aware of the cannibal party they're taking part of.
Games Fan Well I suppose but I never thought of that as a ‘twist’ or like a ‘big reveal’. Maybe because there’s far bigger twists or that that was pretty much evident from the start.
Cherry blossom 34444 Yes Lucy is his wife and Johanna is his daughter, Mrs Lovett kept her away because she’s in love with him and doesn’t want him to find out
I read that this is one of the most difficult songs to sing in the world, because of the intricacy and specific timing along with the need to have a broad vocal range and the need of the ability to go from song to speech quickly using various volumes
"What's my secret ? Frankly, dear, forgive my candor, family secret" "All to do with herbs " "Things like bein' careful with your coriander" Oh Mrs. Lovette, what a peach you are.
2:02 The look in Sweeney's eyes is so revealing about his character. His eyes are those of concern, not contempt of the child; only fear that Toby might find out about their secret. Out of the five movie versions, Johnny's Sweeney is the most genuine and passionate of them. It's not all about rage and crime, but the yearning for justice, too.
Gotta say, my favorite part of this whole is from 1:25 to 1:35 where Sweeney Todd is seen pacing the porch above the meat pie emporium, like a wolf pacing back and forth as it watches sheep in the fields. The crescendo of the violins along with the big brass horns backing them makes his appearance here like a gothic movie villain, or like the introduction of Chernabog from Fantasia. Truly brilliant!
I also love the music when the beggar women goes up to his barbershop at the end of the film and the camera settles on Todd in the doorway. That big, ominous sound.
1:25 I've seen the movie a million times, but when Mr. Todd comes out so powerful watching everything, there's a quick spark in my body. and we don't even talk when he starts walking slowly and subtly.
And yet, she was surprised why Sweeney tossed her into the fire in the end? She could have told him the truth that Lucy was still alive, but she was deluded to think that Sweeney would fall for her. Ladies , when a man says no , he means no , and if you made his life a living hell , you will suffer a consequence far worse than death.
It's so much shorter than the Broadway version. I really like the other versions. The 'Knock 3 times' part is gone and also Sweeney originally got his 'evil' chair during this song.
To anyone wondering, yes she did know who the beggar woman was, being Lucy Barker. She lied about her being dead, even during Todd's singing while he gets his razors back, she says she always had a fondness for him. It's not a theory, it's a fact that she knew the beggar was Lucy
@@FenrirAldebrandYes, but she still lied. Lucy got poisoned at the party, because in the scene from the party you see her drink something and fall on the couch, after which Turpin rapes her. In addition, she lied about the pharmacy and that she was an alleged heroine, that she tried to stop her, but that Lucy died, because she tried to stop her, but failed, means "too late, she didn't want to listen to me and killed herself ." She played the heroine in her version of the story, when in fact she knew about Lucy on the street and didn't help her and everything.
borntoit1 i know what you’re getting at, but mrs lovett technically never lied about anything. she is selling pies made of meat, after all, but no one ever asked what *kind* of meat. and she made them herself, so she’s not a fraud-but she is definitely fooling them
Victor Sage It's not really a reprise, as much as it is its own song. Reprises serve to reaffrim a theme or point of the original song - this is telling a seperate plot point, and has nowhere near the same point of Pirelle's Miracle Elixir.
