I've come to a similar conclusion rose colored glasses of childhood for many who are complaining is informing their criticism. Agreed, I watched the original as an adult, and it irritated me to no ends with all the fluff episodes of unnecessary story. However I understood that it was a children's cartoon, so they wanted to appeal to that demographic. I'm enjoying this one much better
Well Zuko's dialogue throughout the season has been completely re written because he sounds dumber like he's never had any training being a commander before.
I actually read a fanfic years ago where the division Zuko saved that day became his crew, so I'm glad they actually made it canon. while I ADORE the Zuko-development and it's obvious the creators of the show like him the most, if they don't step it up big time next season with Aang, Katara, and Sokka, the show is really gonna fall short. the show is *about* Aang, so his development should definitely be more of a priority than it's been so far. he didn't seem to really change that much imo despite supposedly learning a few harsh lessons.
You guys absolutely nailed it why people are disliking the show bcoz they just took so much story out of Aang and Katara even...this show really should have been 10 episodes to give proper screen time to all the characters...the show is more focused on Zuko rather than Aang gang...hell they didnt even bother with making Aang learn waterbending with Katara and they disnt even hint at a possible romance with them
Absolutely agree that Ozai banished Zuko because he thought it was good parenting. Even in the cartoon he said “suffering will be your teacher”. He never expected Zuko to succeed. He wanted Zuko to suffer and become stronger (then Ozai would have reversed the banishment), or stay ‘weak’ and away from the throne forever.
You guys have also to understand that the writers hadn't known that they would get more seasons. That's probably why they wanted to get as much of the story as they could in this season. They'll probably spend most of next season on character development since the third season is already green-lit 🖖😎👍
I remembered in an interview that the creators said they are not going to do the time limit till comet because of the aging of actors between seasons. Obviously, the comet will come. It will just be after small time skips after seasons unless they do season 2 and 3 at Sametime, then they may change their mind.

my only pet peeve, it feels like it needs to hold your hand. The animated series treated you more like an adult "If you like the 41st division" "But, we're the 41st" Yeah no shit, just have the dude react not say it out loud
I feel bad for the 42nd division that replaced the 41st. I’m assuming they still went forward with that plan but now they needed a new division to take the sacrificial role.
1. you forgot in the comics ozai questioned if zuko was really his son. 2. we love the callback of the weakness and compassion line 3. also remember at this point in time zukos source for firebending was his anger
I'd like to point out that in the credits of every episode, the original creators are not there. But in Episode 6 they are written as writers of that episode, because it is the only one they did work on before they left. The best episode in the show is the one the original creators worked on.
zuko and iroh continue to be the most compelling characters in any adaptation. I guess the 41st division change was from the og creators. They have a writing credit in this ep i believe so makes sense it worked.
The dynamic between Zuko and Iroh is definitely the best part of this season, the most heartbreaking and well rounded journey. If the show gives this much attention to the relationship between Katara and Aang in the next season, this show would be unstoppable. As it is, I think the live adaptation would have been spectacular if it had been 10 episodes long in order to further flesh out the relationship between Sokka, Aang and Katara while letting key moments breathe more.... This show is on the very verge of greatness. You can tell all the pieces are there. The script and pacing just needs some tweaking.
What's interesting about this version is they have it so it looks like Ozai regrets torching Zuko's face; like if you go back and really look, it almost looks like Ozai might cry!
I always loved Zuko since the beginning more than the other characters in the live action. But episode 5 really made me like the live action more than I did in the beginning. This is probably my favorite episode. Still haven't watched the next episodes lol. And I would love to see a version of a show about Zuko. But I am happy they made Aang the most important character in the anime and had other characters grow which made me love them even more. Especially Zuko.
the whole season is pretty good but this episode really was S+ Tier. episode 8 is really good too, excited for their reaction! also I'm so happy the show is getting a season 2 and 3, I think it's only gonna get better from here!
There are two more seasons left for them to develop Aang, let them cook bruh. I like that they are focusing on Zuko early. They will focus more on aang when toph shows up and he starts learning the other bendings.
If u really think abt it. Aang doesn’t really get any development in season 1. Where aang’s character really stands out is when he’s interacting with different people and helping others. That’s where we learn about aang’s character. So in a show where you have to take away most other stories, it’s gonna feel like aang isn’t as developed. Hopefully they fix that in season 2
Ngl, this live action did beat my expectations, but not by a mile at all. ATLA live action does do some good like with the visuals and the setting approach to the show, and ofc Zuko and Iroh's characters/relationship build has easily been the best thing for this show in terms of story and character writing. Overall, I feel like this is the best ep this show gave us honestly. They need to do a lot more work in S2 if they want a better reception from the viewers and fans!🤷🏽♂️
Ozai is defintely more complex here. As much as I love Mark's voice for the character in the animation, Ozai is straight up just an evil stereotype in ATLA. Here I think it starts as more of a generational trauma thing. You know Azulon was pretty "tough love" considering he ordered Zuko's death for Ozai even suggesting he take Iroh's place. Strength over everything has been the fire nation's operating orders for generations. It was that moment of still questioning him, "The weak can get stronger" bit where Ozai decided to give Zuko the impossible fetch quest. Daniel is playing it well, and I think that adding more complexity to Ozai is necessary when we're seeing him so much sooner. It's allowing a lot more character growth for Azula as well.
I cried so much during this episode, there was kind of a redemption with this episode but still didn't take away from the meh-ness of episode 5. When I first showed the animated series to my friends the obvious question about who our favorite character is in this series besides Iroh, because everyone loves Iroh, my answer was Zuko, hands down. I was happy about how the story telling went, giving us the backstory on Zuko and the love that Iroh has for him. The pacing in this and the last episode was so questionable involving Aang (don't you meen Ovatar Ong? lol) Sokka and Katara it felt like Aang was gone for a few days and to complete this mission he has to finnish several side quests.
The best episode of the season, without a doubt. I definitely think this truncated season means it's so plot-focused instead of a slow character building, and they tend to spoon-feed the audience too much e.g. the lengthened conversation between Zuko and Aang. Zuko really does stand out as the best thing to come out of the season along with Iroh, and to some degree Ozai. Since they have a season two and three, I hope they slow things down and focus more on character development instead of this speed-run through plot.
We're enjoying the show overall, but we really love Zuko and Iroh. What are your thoughts on those characters?

This show cut out more of the dodging and focused more on the weight of responsibility, so it feels a bit one-note at the moment. Aang's development comes along a bit more once he almost loses Katara to the general and loses Appa in the desert. I think we'll see a much better version of Aang in season two, especially now that the show is cleared to finish the whole series so they don't have to rush as much
Dallas is amazing bro. He made me love Zuko character
Who are you talking to?
@@TheTruth-13 what the fuck wrong wit u bruh 😭😭😭😭😭😭 why is your bitch-ass being so negative and weird in this thread? theyre talking to the normies. WHO THE FUCK ELSE?

where’s number 5 from you guys? 😭
Yeah, that's what I was thinking!
I came here literally to ask this question. I'm sure they will get it posted eventually.
Yup I think they accidentally released this one
Something tells me they uploaded the wrong episode 😂
Description
the bad writing critique is interesting for me considering this episode was written by the original creators lol but most fans know they just created the ATLA shell and all the other writers developed it for them
also imo i think they're giving a lot of the gaang's development time to zuko and iroh. i love them both but a lot of their development was season 2 & 3 not this first one.
lol well it seems to me several of them have certain complaints and are now going into the episodes looking for those things to complain about. I also suspect some of the people complaining are looking back at the original writing with rose colored glasses, so to speak.
@@p-forest agreed. I watched this as an early 20 something so I had a different prospective. I've come to a similar conclusion rose colored glasses of childhood for many who are complaining is informing their criticism. Though them taking issue makes sense many complaints sound like why doesnt make me feel exactly the same as I did when I first watched and why isnt it one-to-one copy of the cartoon
Where is 5?
Description
You guys absolutely nailed it why people are disliking the show bcoz they just took so much story out of Aang and Katara even...this show really should have been 10 episodes to give proper screen time to all the characters...the show is more focused on Zuko rather than Aang gang...hell they didnt even bother with making Aang learn waterbending with Katara and they disnt even hint at a possible romance with them
Where’s episode 5?
In the description just go all the way down
Absolutely agree that Ozai banished Zuko because he thought it was good parenting. Even in the cartoon he said “suffering will be your teacher”. He never expected Zuko to succeed. He wanted Zuko to suffer and become stronger (then Ozai would have reversed the banishment), or stay ‘weak’ and away from the throne forever.
Yay we got episode 6 super early.
Definitely the best episode!! Love everything Zuko and Iroh in this show
this was written and directed by one of the of creators btw
Actually, not directed by either of them and also co-written by the daughter of Albert Kim, along with others. But yes, Bryke co-wrote this one.
3:24 I did not expect a Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island reference! 🏆
Sure was hahahah
Where is the five??? :"D
Did they skip episode 5? Lol

@@k.brenae6032 Thank you!
Not to worry. Zuko is going to have his own movie.
You guys have also to understand that the writers hadn't known that they would get more seasons. That's probably why they wanted to get as much of the story as they could in this season. They'll probably spend most of next season on character development since the third season is already green-lit 🖖😎👍
Episode 6 Mask is one of my favorite episodes of anything ever.
TO WATCH EPISODE 5:
Go to the description and scroll all the way down, should be the last link. For some reason it’s unlisted
The addition of the 41st being the soldiers Zuko didn't want to sacrifice was my favorite change in this adaptation
Great discussion at the end. Why I love watching you guys. Keep up the good work!
This episode is one of my favourite pieces of Avatar content in general.
I remembered in an interview that the creators said they are not going to do the time limit till comet because of the aging of actors between seasons. Obviously, the comet will come. It will just be after small time skips after seasons unless they do season 2 and 3 at Sametime, then they may change their mind.
This episode and episode 1 out of the 8 episodes wherein the writers of the OG story were actually involved. So those 'stories' that they totally ditched NATLA is not entirely true, they were both in the credits.
Episode 1: Albert Kim and Michael Dante DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko
Albert Kim: showrunner
Mike and Bryan: ATLA/TLOK creators, Avatar Studios heads
Episode 2: Joshua Hale Fialkov
Episode 3: Christine Boylan
Episode 4: Keely MacDonald
Episode 5: Gabriel Llanas
Episode 6: story by Ubah Mohamed and Bryan Konietzko & Michael Dante DiMartino, teleplay by Emily Kim & Hunter Ries and Bryan Konietzko
Episode 7: Audrey Wong Kennedy
Episode 8: Albert Kim
We were blubbering messes from Zuko, Iroh & 41st!
Honestly one of the best changes they did from the show.
The crew is my favorite change of the show. I really hope they expand on that in the coming seasons.
my only pet peeve, it feels like it needs to hold your hand. The animated series treated you more like an adult
"If you like the 41st division"
"But, we're the 41st"
Yeah no shit, just have the dude react not say it out loud
You never watched the original show, or paid attention.
Guys ep 5 is in the description
Can you help? it doesn't appear in the description for me! could you link it?
Guy on the left is growing on me I like how he’s doesnt talk that often like Mikey. Always has solid takes to
Episode 6 before 5???
Episode five is in the description just go all the way down
I feel bad for the 42nd division that replaced the 41st. I’m assuming they still went forward with that plan but now they needed a new division to take the sacrificial role.
1. you forgot in the comics ozai questioned if zuko was really his son.
2. we love the callback of the weakness and compassion line
3. also remember at this point in time zukos source for firebending was his anger
“A drinkith for me is faces for the” 😂😂 that shit was so funny.
5:55 I liked this scene but it is funny how when the dynamic changes between iroh nd June it's cool now lol
8:09 Damn, he actually sounded like Zuko
I'd like to point out that in the credits of every episode, the original creators are not there. But in Episode 6 they are written as writers of that episode, because it is the only one they did work on before they left. The best episode in the show is the one the original creators worked on.
Is just me or they made Zuko more likable in the early episodes or probably because we just know him now?
Shorty shot his scrunchie off😂👏🏾👏🏾
I've spoken to so many people who never watched the animated series and they Zuko reveal surprised them actually
zuko and iroh continue to be the most compelling characters in any adaptation. I guess the 41st division change was from the og creators. They have a writing credit in this ep i believe so makes sense it worked.
Avatar has always been the Zuko show!
"How are you going to carry this man?"
The best way possible: off-screen.
3:18 ayyye Suraj with that Scooby Doo on Zombie Island
I had the same reaction at the end, I was like "Why do people not like this?!"
16:31 I haven’t seen anybody not like this episode. Even most people who don’t like the show love this episode
lmao I'm sorry to say I've seen the troll haters going around hating even this episode 😔
Crazy zuko had a chance to catch ozai on that same side
The joe Jackson comment 😂😂😂
"Man Peanut Butter."
🙂Thank you, Chris from the bottom of my heart.
8:08 he really sounded like Dante there for a sec
I always loved Zuko since the beginning more than the other characters in the live action. But episode 5 really made me like the live action more than I did in the beginning. This is probably my favorite episode. Still haven't watched the next episodes lol. And I would love to see a version of a show about Zuko. But I am happy they made Aang the most important character in the anime and had other characters grow which made me love them even more. Especially Zuko.
the whole season is pretty good but this episode really was S+ Tier. episode 8 is really good too, excited for their reaction!
also I'm so happy the show is getting a season 2 and 3, I think it's only gonna get better from here!
the absolute best ep
the second and third season has been renewed.
Easily the best episode, Shows u how great of a person Zuko really is.
They want us to love zuko lol nd I'm here for it
There are two more seasons left for them to develop Aang, let them cook bruh.
"I kinda wish they were all Indian, tho."😂😂😂
Zhao is so good🤣
Ngl, this live action did beat my expectations, but not by a mile at all.
First reactor I've seen realize he's Sensei Ishikawa from Ghost of Tshushima, respect.
