Airports do this to remain profitable. About 60% of their revenue comes from these shops hence the price hike. Also they must be run 24/7, so more overhead cost to keep the shop running, usually you will find only one of each type of food available so lack of competition is a small benefit.

We don't have a desired canteen for airlines staff, if we want to eat in airport authority canteen we have to walk from terminal to airport authority canteen and wait for minimum 20 mins since all the workers ( new terminal construction workers, u can see it in the video itself ) eat there only since it's cheap to get the food itself, by the time we finish eating our break time will be over... U don't rely know about aviation staff life here bro.

one of my friend working in Airport and he said reason for pricey is first the rent , rent is like 5-10x of normal shop and one part of profit should pay to airport authority.
Original Rate for 100 Sqft space is around 80K per year in chennai airport. as per AAI website. which is nominal but gilma vaangiduvaanga so rate over.

Seems it's a problem all over the world. In most of the developing countries they sell food products in same price as in Western counterparts. For a tourist from Europe or US , they may not feel the difference as these products are sold almost similar price.
E.g. 1 bottle of water around €1.50 in Europe. ₹100 in Indian airport.
At least they could reduce food prices in shops outside terminal buildings.
Horrible for hungry passengers paying ₹120 for a very small dosa and chutney that was almost bad while waiting for domestic connections.
If you take number of passengers travel to Chennai Airport. Its more of Indians.
The cost is not to par with western countries culture.
There is a huge fee to be paid for AAI (Airports authority of India)
Apart from free, there is huge bribe to pay as the place in airport is leased out and there is competition to get a spot in Airport.

These restaurant and coffee shops are meant for NRIs and foreigners , for us it very cheap as dosa 200 is pretty cheap while in UK The dosa is sold for minimum 500 rupees and quality as well not as good as sangeetha
So NRI don’t mind you should check them when the flights departure I see most of rich Indians enjoying them

It's depends on the place & people's affordability. It not only happens in airport. This issue takes in bus journey as well. For example Deluxe or Air bus will b stopped in restaurants where price will be around 100rs. Whereas Volvo, Scania bus ll b stopped in restaurants where the price will b high. Even bus stopping is based on people affordability

@@meetvikram4u I am not justifying. I am just saying the reality. It's not only mistake from restaurant side even public r equally responsible for this.
For example if someone is earning 10k they might eat in a normal restaurant. Same person if he earns 50k he ll go to KFC, McDonnell or Subway & act as if he never went to normal restaurants.

Seeing our own Indian chains do well and also seeing them encouraged by our government inside our airports is heartwarming. Thank you for some great Vlogs. I recently took an international flight. There are 3 hotels near the basement gate. Biriyani shop, sandwich shop, idli shop. Coffee = 150 rupees. NV biryani = 500 rupees. Absolutely crazy prices. But people are buying and eating as in flight food is provided an hour after take off.

I think due to the high rent and maintenance there, the prices are high accordingly almost the same as inside the flight. As the hungry passengers don't have other options other than eating there before alighting the next flight, they are forced to eat there.
varun if ur having credit card of HDFC or SBI platinam u can use Airport International and Domestic Lounges for free...i.e not for free but for very cheap amout such as 2 rupees u can have unlimited food plus juice even coke etc............. try to review it once

Due to high rent they too increase the price of the item they sell. Every item price is calculated depending on the rent of the place and number of customer they get in a selected time interval.
So this is very normal in airports. Once in Bangalore airport without any other option I ate upma for 270rupee.

I usually go to airport 3.5 hours before the flight departure. After landing, it may take another 1 to 1.5 hours to reach hotel or home. So I always buy sandwich, samosa, digestive biscuits, chocolate, and water before going to the airport. I don't buy anything inside the airport. The price inside the airport is not high, but a form of robbery. I discourage it. 💪🇮🇳💪
