Leo Fender employed the "3-Saddle Bridge" design on his (original) BROADCASTER. This was NOT an accident. There was method to his madness.
The unmistakable, unique "Telecaster Tone," which cuts through any mix and some folks have described as "an icepick to the forehead," emanates from the bridge pickup which sits right below the strings at their shortest distance from the bridge. Two strings share each saddle of the bridge.
When one of the strings is plucked, its' "partner string" on the same saddle, vibrates "sympathetically" with the 1st string creating sonic harmonics that NO OTHER GUITAR IN THE WORLD can produce.
I paid $1, 500.00 for a brand-new American Fender Telecaster in the 90's and was disappointed to see that they had switched to a "6-Saddle Bridge" design. ☹

Very impressed at the quick, nonchalant magnets swap to genuine Alnico 5's. I've just replaced the entire pickups in the past. The Tele neck pickup cover removal reminded me of my first genuine Tele I bought used in early 1986. It was my first professional grade electric guitar, an early 70's Fender Telecaster. The original pickups were microphonic with weak output. I intended to wax pot them, as I had successfully done other pickups. I mistakenly raked those metal tabs of the neck pickup cover across the wire windings. That ruined the pickup and was only fixable with a coil rewind. Through most of the eighties Semie Moseley had his Mosrite guitar manufacturing shop local to me in Burke County NC. I contacted Semie and took that Tele neck pickup to him to rewind. Never actually got the pickup back, but it was cool to visit his shop then in 1986, and two more times the following year.

@SCAR MY GUITAR I love your channel and when I love something I let everyone know about it. I'm the same way about parts, and I know you'll be glad to know about these guys, they're right up your alley philosophically. I'm not affiliated , just a happy fellow Ohioan customer. *The Boot Strap Pickups* company in Mt Giliad, Ohio produce insanely good sounding pickups that are custom wound and OEM pickups. I happen to have a set of Boot Strap Original Recipe '51 Telecaster pickups that would be well over 200 bucks anywhere else. I have no idea how he makes a set for 50, but that leaves more money left to spend on your Scar Guitar.

I just ordered a cheap hot rail for the bridge and a proper tele neck for it, and I’ll probably replace the neck pup too but for now it’s just gonna be the proper tele neck and the bridge pup. I don’t hate the machines on it but may replace them later on.

    • @zuperdee
      @zuperdee 4 місяці тому +1

It is NOT always advisable though. It’s only safe to do in cases where the coil is wrapped around a solid bobbin. In many vintage pickups, however, the coil wire is actually wrapped directly around the magnetic pole pieces, and hammering the pole pieces in/out that way can potentially snag the coil wire and break it. Of course, if you have vintage pickups, chances are you already have AlNiCo magnets, but it’s still good to be aware, as I’ve also heard of people damaging their pickup coils by trying to flatten out staggered pole pieces on a vintage Strat, for example. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Awesome video Sean. I have been on the fence, looking at several inexpensive China LEFTY electric guitars to do upgrades to make it a decent player. I have learned much from your channel and view all the videos I can through U-tube non - subscription. I am using a lefty acoustic dreadnought due to missing fingers on my left hand, so I pick with my left and cord right. I'm not the best by a long shot but I try. I been thinking about the Lyx-pro as I have heard had a better neck to start with.
For me I would do the drill through body, as I have a good drill press. I would likely replace the pick-ups and go to a bone nutt and locking tuners. I have most of the tools to do the guitar. I would video my progress and try to make it a viewable quality with my old Motorola phone.
Playing clean and no n microphonic is what I like.
Your absolutely right about Gibson and Fender in their quality leaves much to be desired and you too much for what you get. ( Lousy value); and these companies did it to themselves. Thanks for your videos and your helping more people than you will ever know. 73 GOD bless; Earnest K5EWM.👍

Hey Sean, I had the telly just like that one. I sold it but not for any wrong reasons.I didn't know if I was gonna do any gigging for a while. And It went to a very good home they were pleasantly pleased. But I put chicken head knobs For tone and volume and it looked great! Just for looks and a change of pace. Anyway, the only thing that was wrong with it was the fact that the lead pick up was not hooked up.I had to solder it up myself.Literally nothing when you rolled the volume. But once I did that I put earnie ball super slinky's on it and it sounded Great! It was called, 'and you know what This means', an open box deal. It was 80 bucks, no shipping! Hell of a deal! Anyway, love what you did with it. And they are great guitars in my mind! Rock on Mr. Shagnastys! 👍🤘🏻🎸😉

That “Reaper” of yours is really quite a handsome design!!! Will there be more of them?!? I don’t know how I missed the fact that it’s a combination of SG and LP designs-that’s very much like what Kurt Cobain did, combining the Jaguar and Mustang into the Fender Jag-Stang!

I got one the Cozart Esquire clones. It's shaping up to be an amazing instrument. Your videos have been really helpful with my project.

I got 2 of the Lyx Strat copies and am selling one and keeping one. They are both 'good enough' once set up with better tuning machines and especially if you can get some pickups you like better.

You are the best , I enjoy every one and look forward to seeing the next.Would dipping them in the wax treatment stop the microphonics? I know the pups can be replaced but I find the pole pieces and Alnico magnet upgrade very interesting.Keep up the good work bro

    Question good sir,
Do you feel that shielding isn't necessarily, Either copper tape or shielding paint?

Nice, you show how a little work goes a long way with these inexpensive models. Can't wait to see the Fender they sent you. Josh's video was really cool, your guitar received much deserved acclaim, but you already knew that. Thanks for another fine video.

Never would have thought that was a 100 buck guitar. You got a winner, Sean.

Those full size pots kick ass! What would you do for a bridge to put two humbuckers in one! I love Teles.

What causes a guitar to be micro phonic? Bad wire. Lack of shielding?

Very informative and I thought it was interesting with the bridge set-up and replacing the magnets in the pickups. I have wondered if there are better switches that fit those imported telecasters and I was surprised that the larger pots were able to fit.
