    Thanks! Comparison is a good term. I often think |Good|Quick|Cheap| you can have any two. A lot of good work can be done inexpensively taking time to use what's on hand. The column on my old Clausing mill has a plate where the barrel switch was. Its a perfect place to clamp the base of the indicator holder for the y axis.

      Hello Ron, Thanks for watching and this comment. Yes make do with what you have on hand to get the job done. If it is your own time you can take as long as you like in doing the set ups. Regards.

    Back in the old days we used frim joint calipers to measure everything but nowadays some people cannot even read a digital caliper that can resolve to 5 microns........I've often used the back end of a drill to gauge a hole......whatever it takes etc.

      Quite so Ian, just use whatever you have on hand at the time. Thanks for watching. Regards.

    Brilliant method! Making a reference block is next on my list. Thanks for sharing this method for us poor sods without DROs!

      Glad it was helpful James. If you make 2 tee slot plates, you can then use them to put the part directly on the table and you will not need to indicate the part for parallel, as the tee slots should be machined parallel to the slideways. Thanks for watching. Regards.

      Hi Paul, thanks for the view. Yes I expect it will, from what I recall when finish building one , that it was a bit primitive dials wise. Regards.

    Thank you for putting this video together. I hadn't thought about the use of the Joe blocks as a reference in this manner. I can see how you could get very accurate results with this method.

    Hi Dave. Thanks for this video the Jo block setup is a good idea. I keep noticing things about your mill setup that intrigue me, the tarp chip guard, the quill wheel, the mounting method for the vise to the table (reference pins?) And the vise handle and I am sure more. I would love to see a workshop tour showing all the mods and chip/swarf control you have setup. Cheers from Tassie, Craig

    Cheers Dave, not having a DRO on either my mill or my lathe, these are handy tips for me. The lathe being imperial with dodgy metric markings on the dials is particularly troublesome for getting movements accurate. I had already worked out the need for a reference surface for the lathe, I have put a 200mm plate bolted to the back of the cross slide dialled in that a dial gauge can run along that I am experimenting with. seems to be proving useful so far.

      Glad you enjoyed it Stuart. Yes those tee slot plates are a Godsend at times. Use 2 and the part is parallel to the leadscrew. No DTI up and down the length trying to get a part parallel as you would normally have to do without them. 2 tight fitting round rods will also do the same job. Thanks for watching. Regards.

    • @daveticehurst4191
      @daveticehurst4191  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for watching. You will find the tee slot backstop invaluable when sitting long parts directly to the table, no need to dial the part in if you use two of them. Regards.

      @@daveticehurst4191 Going back to the indicator question. you are using them to indicate contact not measure distance. It's a good idea.

      @@BensWorkshop Glad you saw the principle. I hope a few other people do too. I see so many YT videos where people are using a DTI for a measurement and not taking into account any Co Sine errors, and wonder why the part comes out wrong. Regards.
