No. 23 is also my favorite Mozart piano concerto. That first movement just sings with this youthful exaltation; from the first notes, it makes me picture a foal running through a field as children play in the background. And that second movement...as you say, Mozart didn't write a ton of music in minor keys but the minor music he did write is unforgettable, and this movement deserves to be included in that collective memory of his minor music.

Oh, but the last movement! So clever, and such a romp!

@@erichodge567 Yes, the third movement is such a perfect way to end this concerto, after the heavy introspection of the second movement.

His 17th piano concerto is sublime

@@timothythorne9464 So I just listened to the 17th on your suggestion, I knew it was a good sign that I had it in my playlist. I hadn't heard this one in awhile but it's a sweet gem of a concerto for sure. I really liked the first part of the andante.

Mozart lived 35 years and composed 27 piano concertos. Imagine if he lived as long as Stravinsky. Probably he would compose 100 piano concertos.

in all these 40 concertos you can find 1 or 2 good ones only - the rest have too many notes and are plain technical extended etudes. Not comparable with Schumann's or Brahms' ones -

Very close to my opinion, although I think 20. is the best. First movement of this concerto is the best movement ever by my opinion. But, everybody has certain feelling different than others. Good choises!

Same here! It was Beethoven's favorite too. Alkan liked it so much he transcribed the whole thing for piano solo.

My very first live Classical performance was "A LARK ASCENDING" AND" MOZART'S PIANO CONCERTO NO.25". Thirty four years later I still love both of these works.

The top two are my favourite also. Otherworldly in expression and feeling. That these exist, the enigma of their creator as a man (capable of such things!) is as close as anything worldly gets to reminding we are more than mere beasts.

Yes the top three really well deservedly picked. Some pianist actually described the 23 the queen and No. 25 the king of Mozart’s piano concertos. I think I will always struggle with the choice of No. 21 and No.24, both are just equally great with the top 3. And with the endearing No.12, 14, 15 and No.17. How can one not weep a bit with all the joy and beauty and liveliness touching our hearts and souls crosses more than two and half centuries.

Yay! 23 is my favourite too. The slow movement is so gorgeous. Do you have a favourite recording or live performance? Kocsis and Belohlavek in Prague is available on UA-cam, and I've not yet heard a finer 2nd movement of this concerto. Thanks for your very interesting list!

The 2nd movement of his 20th should be rated 11. It’s the greatest “slow” movement with Beethovens 2nd on no.5 closely followed.

I actually wish this was longer. go into some more detail on the composition and the key, etc. I'd like to hear a more detailed analysis. For me, Mozart is the greatest composer. I've seen other people say Bach and Beethoven but Mozart is #1 for me. It just sounds like Mozart is having fun writing his music. You don't really hear that same sense of playfulness in other composers.

That's an odd one: the D major was really popular during Mozart's lifetime, but it's fallen in people's estimation since, mine included. I actually marked it 6.5/5.5/7 total 6.33 so it never made the top 10
