DVD Summary below:
In Short Lines & Branch Lines Volume 3, we’ll revisit the industrial lines in the Lehigh River Valley and then work our way west to the coal regions in the Wyoming Valley.
We’ll view the Northampton & Bath and Ironton in the early 70’s, the LNE Bethlehem branch, the Lehigh Valley’s Barber Quarry and West End branches, the lines to Jeddo and the West Pittston Branch in early Conrail and close with the Wanamie Mine Railroad in Newport Township near Nanticoke
Narrated with commentary by Mike Bednar
Color; approximately 64 minutes run time
The first clip, the small tank engine - WOW that is some rough track! I never get tired of these - please keep em coming!!!
The engine still exists and was recently brought back to ita home rails
The photographer seemed like he was going to run like hell for a second! Ha!
Note - the one dislike is from an NS exec for Mike's comment! hahaha

Riding on the granite. Took a baseball bat to the spark arresters. The flying switch.
Great old days when men could be men.
Thanks for these vids. Memories
3:30 anyone else see the kid wipe out on his bike?
I have seen several flying switches even as late as 2005. The last one I saw the brakie rode the cars (two) down the side track
which went out into the street for street running. He cranked on that brakewheel for all he was worth as there was a car parked
where the track got into the street. He stopped about five feet short of plowing that car down the road. Then the engine came back
to get the cars as all they had to do was run around them. The look on that brakie's face was priceless. Normally I would of had my
video camera but that day I didn't have it.
The flying switch. They would string you up for that today. Bet it was never in a rule book.
Good Olde Time skills !!! : D
An old Brakeman buddy of mine did that once on the Sante Fe w/a passenger car yrs back. A Road Foreman saw him do it and told him "Don saved yourself 10 minutes and got ya 10 brownies!" I've forgotten what that meant exactly. But wasn't good. Lol
@@b3j8 I guess it's not the Brownies we all like to eat !! Lol
Demerits, I believe it means in RR speak : )
@@ronniefarnsworth6465 Okay there ya go. He's passed on now, but he did say he did it the "Company way" after that little episode. Thanks!
@@b3j8 Lol, I always Loved the old RR guys growing up in the 1960s-70s Flat switching my Local yard in Salem, MA. on the B&M, the cars would be "Banging" and rolling on 4 different tracks at times !!! It was great to watch : D
My grandpa worked on the Wanamie. Died in the 60's of black lung. I remember calling the trains lokies
C'mon Mike don't hold back how you feel about those spark arresters!!! LOL
Boy if Mike Bednar doesn't have an Old Railroaders voice than no one does !!! Lol : )
Love all of these videos of branchlines, taking us back to a time when nearly community in America had trains passing through--and accomplished without computers! Reminds me of the old C A & C (Hudson-Columbus, Ohio) which passed through my hometown of Westerville, Ohio, until early Conrail (1982)...also, the commentaries are priceless!!!...
Amazing to think that 3 of those Wanamie tank engines are still around. #4 is privately owned in Oregon, #9 (DL&W #28) is owned by Vierson Boiler Works in Grand Rapids, MI, and #28 is stored in Merril, Oregon as a part of Fred Kepner’s collection.
No 9 is being restored
No. 9 is coming home. I got some of her parts in my room. We built a railroad in Ashely. We are gonna try to get her before the deadline
@@mattsmocs3281 what is the gauge on the Wanamie mine r.r.?
@@peterkordziel7047 36” gauge. Although the equipment was designed at 35 and a half for sharper curves.
That drop at Wanamie!! Awesome!
6:40 ive heard that called Flying Dutchman move to go around the cars that fast.
6:50 that is so cool how they unload the cars
It makes me sick none of this exists anymore…
Well there is one Wanamine 0-4-0 left that returned to home territory.
sad that alot of theses are bike trails now :(
As someone who rides a bike everywhere, I couldn't agree more bike paths are quite frankly pointless they wind all over the place and have many Hills and it's so much quicker to just ride on the road or a sidewalk. Each day I hope and pray that we can see railroads making a comeback.
@@Realohiorailroadproductions agreed all rail trails are the same all you do is go straight no fun terrain and it's in the middle of nowhere just asphalt with anything cool taken out
The waname mine railway is my favorite part.
Might have to get this for the steam railway section. Real 19th century railroading.
Man I wish these videos were on Netflix or amazon video
That coal train with the 0-4-0T and the surrounding mine buildings was excellent
The narrated sounds like Elaine Benes Father from Seinfeld.
When did the Wanamie Mine railroad shutdown operations?
Another excellent video. ♡ T.E.N.
“Take that ns” 😭💀
HBPS is working to acquire Wanamie 9 and has a fundraiser up on GoFundMe. We are gonna get her running in Ashley in that job. Thanks for getting sound and better color this helps alot
Really neat footage. The light coloured boxcar at 2:50 in this clip; is it visible again on the full DVD?
Wanamie 9 is shown at the end pretty neat to see footage of engines in service that are currently under restoration
Great footage
Why do some of the trains in the video have the caboose behind the engine instead of at the rear of the train?
When did Wanamie mine closed?
72
The video of the line that starts at 1:15 is still active.
Beautiful! I know I can go back.
Any info on the Wanamie Railroad. Lengh of the line, pionts, blue prints.
That information is in the full DVD
love that voice the keeps thing interesting
That first clip, engineer in that tea kettle gotta have some whiplash!
