    My other favorite sax player - I hear Jim Pepper's spirit and sound in so many players who never even knew who he was. He lives on through all of us.

      There are at least a couple of similarities between Jan and Jim Pepper. They both have that robust soaring sound in their sax playing. Jan as with Pepper looked to his roots especially in his later works. His focus on Nordic folk themes was much like Jim Pepper's nod to his heritage. Kudos to both. Two great sax men!

    I have come to wonder if this song is so powerful that it is impossible to do a bad version! I have heard so many versions over the years and while Jim Peppers' many versions will always be the best, I can't say that I have ever heard a bad version.

      Most cameramen don't know how to film jazz. They don't even know if it's the melody or not, who's soloing, or anything. I guess that's true with producers as well.

    Brüninghaus and Weber create that special 70s ECM sound here when I started to listen to jazz. Weber was my man then.

      @jonathanedwards8696 3 роки тому +2

      I've seen Garbarek 10-15 times and never liked him with Katche. Jan's music demands and deserves much more than a simple drum set player. Unless, of course, it's Jon Christensen.

    • @jonathanedwards8696
      @jonathanedwards8696 3 роки тому +1

      Me, too. Jon Christensen's my man. He was so tasteful, sensitive, and musical in his playing. I was fortunate enough to see both Jon and Jan many times, but never together. Manu was a poor choice by Garbarek. Maybe Trilok Gurtu or Marilyn Mazur were unavailable. Nana died.

      @@jonathanedwards8696 "Poor choice" by Jan Garbarek? Katché appeared on at least four studio recordings of Jan's. Any number of tours and Jan played on at least two of Katché's studio recordings and toured with Manu as well. Christensen's great. No doubt but he ISN"T IN THIS GROUP. I can't understand why so many people can't deal with what's presented and pretend they know more than the musicians.

    Marc t - you don't get to play a gig as part of the Jan Garbarek Group - the rhythm section with Eberhard Weber! - if you don't have the chops.

    I've seen Garbarek 8-10 times. Katche is too bangy and noisy for this gentle, lyrical, music.

  • @jonathanedwards8696
    @jonathanedwards8696 3 роки тому +6

    Never liked Garbarek with Mano Katche. His music deserves and demands much more than a simple drum set player. Manu sounds like he's going into "Inna-godda-de-vida" here. So inappropriate for a piece with so much sensitivity. I've seen Garbarek 10 or 15 times. I could never figure him out. And, he won't do interviews. I don't know what he has to hide. My favorite show; the 1986 tour for "It's Okay to Listen to the Gray Voice." David Torn, who replaced Bill Frissell kicked the band's ass bringing energy and excitement to Garbarek's usual reserved approach. I saw that show once in Boston and twice in New York. I couldn't get enough.

    • @crieverytim
      @crieverytim Рік тому +1

      I agree it's heavy handed. It struck me as odd and without the expected sensitivity, but I also like that it keeps it from being schmaltzy and too-smooth jazz. Though I sympathize w your comment.
      Going to seek out that video now, w Torn. Thanks

      if remarkable for you doesnt mean must be so for everybody . Also peter erskine was good enough to play in trio with John Taylor and palle but ask them WHY they played together since nothing connected . So Why mr. Garbarek choiched this man ? Certainly not because he were good lees or more
