2024 Buick Envista First Drive // Buick Gives the Chevy Trax a Makeover

- The all new 2024 Buick Envista is both a smart and risky move for Buick. It seeks to give younger buyers a way into the Buick brand by offering a lot of content and style at a reasonable price, something the newly redesigned Chevy Trax is attempting for GM, but it also challenged Buick to distill their QuietTuning and excellent ride/handling balance into a small, front-wheel drive platform. For the most part, Buick has succeeded in transforming the Chevy Trax into a credible premium vehicle. There are a few missteps here and there, but the Buick Envista looks fantastic, has a solid premium vibe especially in Avenir trim, and drives very well for the price. Are people going to complain about it being front-wheel drive only? Sure. Are people going to complain that it only comes with a smallish turbo three cylinder engine? Sure. Will that bother you in day to day use? Not nearly as much as you'd like to admit. Watch my walk around video to get a more complete picture, but I think this is a smart move from Buick and keeps them relevant for just a bit longer. What do you think?

It is REALLY good looking. Would make a great first car for someone. Or third for that matter.
It really is. The new design and logo look great.
So, I have seen a ton of videos on the new Envista and actually was able to view one in person(ST trim). I have not driven one yet but for the price! Why not? For under $30k. Buick did good.
At the price point, it's very impressive.
Awesome video. Thanks for this! I think Buick did a bang up job with the Envista. It’s styling is gorgeous, has a huge interior, great cargo space, and a fully loaded Avenir comes it at $29,000.00 and with the available options the Avenir hits around $31,000.00 I mean wow. What a deal! I personally think this is a better deal than say a loaded Civic, Elantra, Sentra or heck even an Altima, Camry or Accord and will way undercut the last few in price but be just as roomy and refined even if it may have a few less niceties and less power. What an amazing vehicle. I think Buick will sell these like crazy! May even be my next vehicle. I purchase a new car every 2-3 years. I have had several Mitsubishis all purchased new such as a 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage ES, 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 SE, 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL Touring, 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage SE (currently own) and have loved them. I personally love the sound and basic design of the 1.2L 3 Cylinder Engine in the Mirages and even went back to the small Mirage from the Compact Eclipse Cross SUV because I missed my Mirage. Buicks 1.2L 3 Cylinder is a far more advanced and refined 3 Cylinder and is a Turbo so that is cool. I like to always purchase the top trim with the most features so I have the fully loaded 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage SE with things like push start, keyless access, plaid cloth and leatherette bolstered heated seats, remote start, led headlights, led drl’s, rockford fosgate audio package, exterior sport package, led tail lights, apple car play, 7 inch touch screen, back up cam, and more. When I saw Buick was making this entry level Envista with the 1.2L 3 Cylinder I was shocked and happy and I will seriously be thinking about this as my next vehicle. I would go with the Envista Avenir trim with the lighter color interior in the Ocean Blue color and get the option package and sunroof. The Avenir trim is super sharp.
Can you please do a mileage test on this car?
Quite an impressive vehicle for the price, way to go Buick.
Very much so. They did good on this.
@@jax1079 I hear alot of reviewers say this rides better over potholes then everything else in its class like the Kona... How dose it stack up against the ride quality of something bigger like a size class above?
@@aidensnow5017 It’s true. I’m a big fan of the way the Buick Envision rides, and the Envista does a great impression of that in a smaller package-not always easy to do. The active noise cancellation also helps to give the impression that it’s more luxurious and isolated than it probably actually is, but it contributes to the “Buickness” for sure.
I just picked mine up on Sat. Went w/ red & traded in my 22 Encore GX, and the more I drive it the more I like it. It has a premium feel, but keeps you inside your means. 🙂🚙
Nice! Glad to hear it!
One person who did a review got 54 miles doing 58 to 62 miles per hour
How? Hyper-miling? Even driving exactly those speeds in perfect conditions, I find that difficult to believe.
Very narrow front seats.
Or large people....
I really like everything about this, but have a really hard time understanding the gas mileage. GM has higher out put 4cyls that get better gas mileage. Just had a GMC Terrain as a rental and saw 33-35mpg average on the highway. Other than that, I love this thing and the Trax.
Yeah, it’s just barely powerful enough to motivate the vehicles it’s in (Trax, Envista, Trailblazer, etc) so it doesn’t return stellar fuel economy, just good. (Definitely not bad)
My parents had a 1987 Olds 88 with the super reliable 3.8 that got 33 on the highway. Is it just the emissions requirements that are holding mileage down today?
@@bearmotel According to fuel economy.gov none of the 3.8 got above 26 mpg highway, and only two of the 4 cylinders got 33 mpg highway.
2:05 haha I live in Chelsea, home of the one and only Jiffy Mix!
a quiet 3-cyl ? That IS good. Great for Buick! Hopefully they took time to make it reliable too.
Active noise cancellation and quiet tuning helps. That’s where people will have to make a choice: single zone climate control ok for getting quiet tuning and noise cancellation that you don’t typically find in this class.
@@jax1079 honestly I have had cars with 2 and even 4 zones and always have I kept them all at the same level.....
@@jprusso224 Agree. I think they made the right choice in a vehicle of this size.
Wow very impressive looking car 👏
Definitely not bad!
Looking to replace my 2017 Honda Civic EX-T. I like the raised ride height, hatchback and quiet ride. I will give this a test drive when they hit the dealer lots soon. I had a 2013 Subaru Crosstrek -- it was just okay. The new ones with the 2.5L are overpriced. Looks like the Preferred trim is good deal. I will also be looking at the Mazda CX-30.
CX-30 is the gold standard for ride/handling balance, but it’s quite a bit smaller inside. The Envista is much roomier.
@@jax1079 Thanks for nice review and details. Do you think the Watts Link is work going for the higher trims?
@@brocklanders6969 Yes. It makes it feel special for the class and contributes to the Buick isolation and quiet tuning. Without it, you might as well buy the Chevy Trax and save some money.
@@jax1079 Good to know. I will look at the ST trim with Experience Buick Package. The Avenir lacks a sporty appearance IMHO.
Trax is the perfect young family let the kids have at it car. Trade it off when you need more. This car is suited for church and lunch on Sundays Dr appointments , grocery store & errands with a little pickle ball on Wednesdays at the rec center.
Sounds like you’ve got it all figured out… 😜
@@jax1079 I'm closing in fast. Not quite there. but some day we all have to hang up our commuter. My problem is I don't really like SUVs or CUVs. And the thought of pickle ball makes me nauseous. Love the vids by the way
@@In-obscurity-n7j Thanks so much! 🙏🏻
Real quiet for such a small vehicle indeed! Congrats are going out to Buick and their styling in this ALL-NEW 2024 Buick Envista!
It’s a looker for sure
I put a deposit for Trax 2024 2RS. Now saw this and i am so confused. But Envista arrives 2 months later! Such a tough call to make...
The Envista gives you a lot, but unless you really want the premium upgrades, you might be happy with the Trax. I’d say the Envista is worth it for trims that have the watts link suspension.
@@jax1079yes thank you for your response. Yea envista looks amazing minus the infotainment system. I decided to see the Trax in person and make my decision. Your reviews are awesome, just subbed!
The low HP of the engine isn't what bothers me, it's the long-term durability of the 3-cyl turbo that makes this a dealbreaker. The poor MPG adds insult to injury.
Three cylinders have been in use worldwide for years.
And 2-cly engines have been used world wide even longer, so by that logic, this new engine has to be perfect! Don’t let the poor reliability of GM’s 1.4 4-cyl turbo scare you.
Great info and coverage, thanks for the clear information about sound levels and ride quality. I look forward to test driving one as soon as they are on the lots.
Thank you! And thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Definitely my next car
Nice! Hope you like it
Thanks for review. Did you drive the base trim preferred with 17" wheels? Wondered how it rides?
I didn’t, but… I’d probably spring for a model with the Watts link (optional on the ST and standard on Avenir) simply because the ride/handling balance was so good on those trims and I’m not sure I would be super enthusiastic about one without it. Just my two cents.
@@jax1079 Any idea what the upcharge for the 19" wheels & watts linkage is on the ST?
@@terrymurphy2637 The configurator went live today. The package includes sunroof/19" wheels/Watts link rear suspension and is $995.
It seems as though the preferred trim is the neglected middle child. I would like to get some opinions on that one but nobody is making a video about it. Not that I've seen. Anyway, I'm keeping an eye out at the dealership. I'd like to test drive it ASAP!
They didn’t have any really available (usually press events cater to the sporty and loaded trims). While the preferred looks like a great value on paper, I think the real value comes when you combine the inherent goodness and practicality with a few choice options (and style in the case of the ST).
@@jax1079 Understood.
@@Cruzan9 From what I've seen in the Us market the preferred is gonna have only 2 option packages...
-One package that add's better looking 17 inch rims, power driver seat, & heated steering wheel.
-The second package adding the sunroof & wireless phone charger.
With both packages added the preferred price goes from roughly 23.5K to about 26K. Buick seems to have done a good job of letting customers have a decent range of options to get everything/most of what they want at a vary competitive price.
@@aidensnow5017 Yeah, the price point is impressive. Ultimately after fees, taxes, and destination I do not want to exceed $28k out the door. The Preferred will give me that for sure. I will consider the ST if there are qualifying dealership incentives that will keep the price within my budget.
Is this some kind of joke? Who in their right mind would purchase this Buick Envista with a 3 cylinder,1.2L turbo charged engine that will most likely have a catastrophic engine failure just after the warranty expires. It should be called a Buick Investa where you have keep investing your money to make last for 5 years.
You’re welcome to buy something else…
3-cylindar engines are becoming increasingly popular in the US and have been in use in Europe for some time. ANY turbo engine is suspect to early failure based on the physics undergirding the design. Joke all you will, but GM has a hit on their hands with this, the Trailblazer, Trax, and Encore GX I think it is called. Most people could care less about the powertrain as long as it meets their needs. Besides, nobody is buying such vehicles to run races. Plenty of other options exist for that purpose. This is just an in between powertrain until electrification hits. I suspect you won't like that either. Like it or not, it's coming soon.
I doubt any car made now is going to be poorly made. Buick has some great reliability numbers over the last decade also.
I want to like this car but the 3 cylinder engine would be my concern! LSPI is LOW SPEED PRE-IGNITION & this engine could be a victim of this type of engine malfunction!
@johnbeckham1483 Also, the 1.2L turbocharged I-3 engine have a timing belt unlike the larger I-3 engine.
He never mentioned if the steering was electric or not? I'm an older guy. I can deal with the engine not being that powerful. I don't I even care about it not having AWD.. I drive a 2015 Ford Fusion through the snow with no issues, here in Michigan. but no LED lighting in the interior, no exposed exhaust pipes. No lockable glove box. No ambient lighting on their top trim vehicle? those are issues that will stop me from buying it
It doesn't matter if the steering is electric or not as it won't make any difference whatsoever on how you drive.
