I think they should always have at least one super squishy quiet big sedan for the people who want that sort of thing. But yeah, the should remake the Grand National for sure.
For some historical reflection ... despite the Envista's Korean roots ... Buick is actually the oldest _existing_ US car company (not only in the US, but in the world). Buick is the company from which GM evolved - it's founder was born in Scotland and the brand has a decent racing history. They were one of the first companies to have their motors used in mid-engine La Mans cars (predating Porsche, Ford and Ferrari). In the 60s, they used stock 215ci aluminum block engines in their Indy cars. The 80's and 90's didn't do the brand any favors, but the new styling (thanks to Asian markets) is headed in the right direction. Buick has never capitalized on its history - and they really should. Hey, this entry level vehicle is slow - but at least the engine sounds like it's working (which it is :D) ... some modern 4-cylinder engines today just sound buzzy and numb.
Nice background for Buick..didn't know all that. I just bought a Buick Envista and love it. I disagree that it's slow. I have no problems with acceleration and power when I want it, letting the turbos kick in. And it delivers so quietly and smoothly. I go up mountains everyday and this engine does not sound like its working, on the contrary, it's stays quiet and delivers plenty of power and keeps the car going at current speed without the annoying loud downshift you hear in other cars. On paper you would think it would be anemic, but it is not by any means. The engine is so efficient and smooth it doesn't need a 4th cylinder. It satisfies the want of hearing some engine noise with a low growl at low speeds when the gas is pushed. Maybe that's by design, idk. Thank goodness they didnt' put in a horrible droning CVT like many new cars are doing (including the Asian makes). It actually has gears and you don't even notice the shift changes hardly. No it's not a BMW but it wasn't intended to race. But it delivers plenty of power and I'm getting 40 mpg highway. WOW!! It's sporty, elegant and functional with the hatchback all in one. Buick did a great job with this one! Don't believe the ones who dismiss it because it's lacking 1 cylinder. It's not needed and its more efficient, less parts to go wrong and better mpg. I’ll never understand why during the GM bankruptcy they got rid of Pontiac instead of Buick. It would have made so much more sense to have one luxury brand and one sporty brand instead of one luxury brand and one semi-luxury brand
I love this rebrand Buick is doing! It looks really nice. I’m a younger person and Buick has always been considered an old persons car and it looked that way before. But now as a younger person I’m much more likely to consider a Buick.
I'm 32 and I hate the fact that I like this car. I was having a conversation with a dude on reddit this morning over how attractive this car is and Buicks design language currently is. As much as I despise CUV's, I'd look at these or the upcoming Envision if I had a kid on the way. These look that good to where I'd give these a look. The Chevy's look bland by comparison. Never thought Buick would make a good looking car, but here we are. I also see tons of these around my city, so They seem to have hit a home run.
Me and my friends went to the dealership in Vaughan to check the car out, nobody in the dealership including the sales guys even had a clue of the car’s existence! 😅
Man remember the 3800 Series II with the super charger. They used to have a Buick Ultra with that engine. Basically a DeVille chassis with that fun SC motor in it. Man what a fricken land yacht that was.

@@Slimecrazy234huh? The BMW X6 came out in 2008….the ZDX, 2010. Now one company I would give credit to is Nissan. The FX35 came out in 2003 with its SUV coupe styling.
I remember when I saw one of these on the road a few weeks ago! I thought the design was very eye catching. I was super impressed with what GM was doing with the “old man brand” Buick just based off of the sporty, ultra-modern look of the Envista until I saw the 137 horsepower engine of the car on Buicks website. Lol.
Because I keep my cars for 7-8 years, I am worried about the durability of a 1.2 litre turbo on a vehicle of this size. I'm not super worried about the non-AWD because I live in Nova Scotia and FWD with snow tires is perfectly fine...but how is that turbo going to hold up in such a small engine? That said, it's a beautiful vehicle and I love, love, love the styling. And I guess I'm their target market because I'm 37.
Some people say there garbage but the engine is literally too new to even tell, people just don't like it because its a 3 cyl engine and everyone wants over 200HP to sit in traffic with. I would imagine like any engine it depends on you as a driver, how heavy is your foot, how often do you change the oil, do you change your oil early?... As a mechanic all of that makes the difference between someone Camry coming into my shop with a blow head gasket at only 80K miles and someone's Camry coming in for their 200,000 mile oil change. ANY turbo, even a 4 cyl Honda will die sooner then a non Turbo engine, and they will die twice as fast if abused by a stupid teen that thinks their 2018 Civic is a sports car (it's nothing of the sort). I would guess this could last over 100K miles fairly easily if you took care of it and drove like an adult that didnt have a complex. But if you want MAXIMUM reliability from a NEW car, Buy a Subaru, even over a Toyota or Honda. Subaru CVT's are chain driven and last WAAAYYY longer then Toyota, Honda, or Hyundai/Kia CVT's, and their non turbo engines are beyond bullet proof and arguably built better then Toyota and Honda's newer engines. Hell even Subaru's turbo engine's REGULARLY live beyond 200K miles even with an abusive driver owning them. I've got several Legacy, Outback, and Foresters that live in the area that have the non turbo 2.5L engines come in for batteries, tires and oil. Several that have 400k, 500k, one even has nearly 900K miles on it that drives Uber and they just keep purring... These newer Toyota's and Honda's are okay but not anything like their old reliability, mainly from the Turbo's and CVT's, typical automakers trading reliability for MPG and or power.
@@aidensnow5017 Too funny, I actually currently own a 2020 Subaru Outback XT turbo, and I follow the maintenance schedule exactly! I only have 77,000 kms on it now (50,000 miles or so) and I’m hoping I’ll get many more before I trade up.
I think these are great looking! I do wish Buick had another engine option, a 4 cyl with 200 hp would be enough. If they option that I'll go take a test drive for sure.
I agree... Just like they just tried to make this vehicle nothing... It was anything but an honest review.. if you don't like Buick fine... But don't put a half-assed review out because of that
The styling of the new generation Buick's is very nice, what gets me is the interior material, although the design is also nice, the material looks so much like cheap plastic. They could take a page off of what Subaru has done with their interior materials. With that one exception, I think they are making some nice cars that are enticing. However since I spend more time looking at the inside (I am after all driving the thing), the interior look is very important to me.
As a Canadian, I would like to also see the fuel economy in L/100km since this is a Canadian channel 😬 I love your channel, but your move towards being almost an American only oriented channel is honestly deceiving.
Thanks for the clarification. I could have looked it up but I think you are right that they should list L/100km, or both… Also that MPG isn’t great. I get a about 8.3L/100km in my 2023 Mazda CX5 GS with AWD (2.5L NA) and if I set cruise control on the highway to like 110km/h I get it down to like 7.0L/100km, it’s the city driving that kills my average. Last night I granny drove my car home (distance to empty was 64km and I had a 65km drive home, about 61km to the gas station by my house) and got the car to 6.8L/100km, I had 7km of range left when I got to the gas station 😆
@@M9_Prime I agree. That's not a great figure. I can get 8.2 L/100 km in my SLK55 at a cruise speed of 120. Admittedly, my city mpg could be better, but if I'm careful and if traffic is low + I'm lucky with lights, I can still get in the 10-11 L/100 km ballpark.
I do have a major concern, though: that 1.2-liter I-3 turbo engine could get heavily stressed, especially accelerating on freeway ramps and running at higher altitudes. Let's hope GM _properly_ engineered the engine to be reasonably reliable, an issue that plagued the turbo I-4 engine on the Chevrolet Cruze.
I bought an Envista and it has plenty of power for accelerating and cruising, even up mountains which I live in. It feels effortless actually. No issues with building speed on ramps at all, it scoots along great when you want to push the pedal more. It doesn't scream at all either, very quiet and smooth. If you didn't know it was a 3 cyl turbos, you would think it was a four or 6. Todays smaller engines are designed to deliver power like 6 cyl used to but with great gas mileage. I'm getting 40-45 mpg highway so it's the best of both worlds.
This would be a sweet little vehicle if it at least offered a bigger engine as an option. At LEAST in the ST trim. A 200-300hp 4 popper would do the trick. Also, agreed with VikingContact 7s being sick winter tires. I have some on my Sonata N Line and it almost seems like they grip BETTER when there is snow and ice on the road.
It's crazy how well Buick's doing in China. I also have no issues with the names of Buick models. It has been said that the regular Buick Encore is being discontinued and it was the company's smallest model. The Encore GX is slightly larger than the Encore and is now the entry-level SUV. The Envista is the "sportier looking" version of the Encore GX. The Envision is the next SUV up and is about the same size as the Ford Escape, Chevy Equinox, GMC Terrain, and Cadillac CT4/CT5. Lastly is the Buick Enclave, Buick's largest vehicle in the US and it competes with the Ford Explorer, Chevy Traverse, GMC Acadia, and Cadillac XT6. It's basically what Ford is doing with their SUV name as they also start with an E.
I like the looks, but Buick should offer another more powerful engine option (probably a turbo 4). Maybe they could make it standard on the avenir trim and an option for the sport touring touring.
I really like the design of this car and for the price point of 28_33k CAN is pretty impressive. Definitely worth considering if someone is looking at compact suv /tall cars. With so many cars these days starting above 40k it is nice to see more choice below that price.
Love all your car reviews Thomas I’m from Montreal Quebec Canada the most European city in North America… we have ancestry from France an England 😊 I do appreciate all the new models that you review.
I see your point. Kind of ironic, when growing up (80's), Buick big motors, Japanese brands tiny motors. Today, Buick 3 cylinder; comparable size Camry, 4 and 6 cylinders.
@@samconnecticut1485Toyota is also moving away from 4 and 6 cylinders though too. They're trying to move towards the 3 cylinder instead of the 4 cylinder because it's smaller and can make just as much torque and power. It's all about efficiency it's why most people have moved away from v8s and v6s. You can make just as much or more power from a turbo v6 or a turbo 4 cylinder.
@@gotworc this is true, but unfortunately Buick doesn't seem to be getting much power and/or economy out of this motor. The Corolla GR makes over double the hp and still gets similar gas mileage out of its 3 cylinder.
@@richardsadventures4958 bullshit they don't. I just test drove an Encore GX (same engine with similar weight) today and you are wrong. It feels, and is, MUCH slower than my 2023 Mazda 3 that cost $26,000.
I think the money saved on the top-spec chevy is money well-saved. At this price, vs the 27k that the full spec Chevy, I'd love to see it with a hybrid that throws in another 40 hp when you launch it hard and saves you fuel in traffic. Other than that, the space/cost ratio is really good for someone who either needs to fit a rear-facing child seat or a couple adults in the back seat. The hatch gives it some utility. I don't think it needs to be sporty, but a bit quicker and better mpg is math that should have been possible at 33k.
11:15 I'm sure this shares the same platform as the Chevy Trax, but I think the Buick equivalent is the Encore. This seems more like the Buick version of the new Trailblazer.
I believe it will sell outside the typical Buick demographics, which has been the over 50 crowd. The value of this car is amazing. It’s not ugly by any means, I think the sports coupe version will be the one to get. The future is 3 cylinder engines, get used to it. I remember back in the 80’s everyone in North America being concerned about 4 cylinder cars.
3 cylinder will not last a long time, especially with a turbo on it! They are just doing this to fill in while they are transitioning to Hybrids and EV's.👎
I bought one this week so i can’t agree more. I’m 32 years old and never taught i would buy a buick. Fell in love with it. The engine is definitely the low point of the car but i don’t care. It’s a everyday car. It’s beautiful rides well, is silent and has tone of room inside. All this while being cheap on gas
I have a 2023 Encore GX, and I'm not mad I didn't wait for the refresh. The new exteriors look incredible, but I'm not a huge fan of the giant slab of glass for the dash.
I like fastback SUVs. The Buick Envista is one of the most attractive fastback SUVs I've ever seen. Considering the bland styling that usually comes from the Big Three domestic car makers, this is a step up. I question the long-term durability of a three-cylinder engine, though.
My first car was a 1990 Buick la sabre custom with that red suede interior. That thing was a fucking BOAT. it was amazing to drive and just cruise. Drove it up and down the east coast USA multiple times. I miss it actually. Was like riding on a soft bouncy cushion.
My first new car was a 1977 Regal, dark brown with a tan landau top! Loved it.I like the size and look of this car, but it would need to have more horses, maybe a hybrid and definitely AWD to entice me. I doubt my wife would give up her BMW I5 for this though.😃

Exceptionally nice looking. also, I really like the sloped back. Unfortunate no AWD … but many can be ok with that. Big screen is super. Slow speed will be a disappointment for some. Good gas mileage and the ok torque seems to help. All this for a low price is hard to beat.
This is kind of a game changer. It’s a beautiful car exterior wise almost competition to the Mazda shape when you look at a good paint job with that side front back door panel, super sexy. On top of that to be a US manufacturer competing with a Toyota excuse me a Honda Japanese civic that brings the bar up. Hopefully they can maintain this, but I think they’re going for a much premium clientele and upping their brand as Buick which I think is great and they should.

Like the looks. My concern is the longevity of a small turbo 3 pot on our highways if you’re a commuter. Also, what rpm does it sit at when cruising around 110-115kph?
I think y'all are crazy. I love this new look. Very fresh design and I definitely think it will do exactly what it's meant to do, attract younger buyers to Buick. Y'all complain when everything looks the same and then complain they're ugly when they dare to be different. Make it make sense.
There's always a difference between daring to be different and looking good, and daring to be different and looking bad. Please see a Pontiac Aztec to understand. It’s amazing how new execs can piss away so much history and greatness in such a short time. Happening to our country for the last 3 years too.
I’ll never understand why during the GM bankruptcy they got rid of Pontiac instead of Buick. It would have made so much more sense to have one luxury brand and one sporty brand instead of one luxury brand and one semi-luxury brand
China is the reason
That logic does make sense, but I'm sure GM was looking at sales volume when they were deciding which brand to axe.
I think even back then Buick sold a lot of cars in China and was a factor in their decision. But yeah.

I have no problems with acceleration and power when I want it, letting the turbos kick in. And it delivers so quietly and smoothly. @@invektrathe Opel-based Buicks are and were ranked among the most reliable cars. Your experience sounds like minority.

Agreed… 30MPG means nothing to me…
30 mpg is 7.8 L/100 km.
Thanks for the clarification. I could have looked it up but I think you are right that they should list L/100km, or both…
Also that MPG isn’t great.
Ok just for you, in our upcoming Audi RS E-Tron GT review we only mentioned the range in kilometres. Now we are even
I do have a major concern, though: that 1.2-liter I-3 turbo engine could get heavily stressed, especially accelerating on freeway ramps and running at higher altitudes. Let's hope GM _properly_ engineered the engine to be reasonably reliable, an issue that plagued the turbo I-4 engine on the Chevrolet Cruze.
Been driving a 2017 encore with the 1.3 turbo and haven't had a single issue and were up to 90k miles.

@@samconnecticut1485Toyota is also moving away from 4 and 6 cylinders though too. I think the fuel economy is pretty decent. This looks to be an affordable and stylish choice for some people. Time will tell if lasts.
I've never seen anyone review a Buick. 😂
