I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, zero turn mower, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

I just had an MTD 2 stroke snowblower come in with a pull start rope that wouldn't retract. Thought the recoil spring broke, but it was just full of powdered snow that froze into ice. Took the recoil off, cleaned out the ice and it was good to go. Ice is powerful stuff. Nice save on the belt failure Dony. Always try the easy stuff first. Thanks for posting.

I try to make sure that the drain hole in the bottom/back of the impeller housing is clear so that melted snow can drain out. If you don't have a drain hole at the bottom/back of the impeller housing, tip the machine up on the auger housing and drill one. I recommend at least a 1/4" dia. and then remove the burrs on the inside. I modified my impeller blades with rubber scrapers and that wipes the housing very clean, I haven't had a problem since,

A snow shovel was so much easier to diagnose. Owning a snowblower takes a lot of knowledge and know-how when it comes to maintenance. I would probably still be searching the engine for the problem. Thanks Doc for the many free tips that helps get us through the winter with our ailing machines.

I coat the insides of the blower with a lot of spray silicone which helps keep the snow and ice from sticking inside the blower auger stages.

  • @johnw1178
    @johnw1178 3 роки тому +2

Don, another great video! It never ceases amaze me but I can’t tell you the simplest things go a long way to prevent beating up your machine. On my own personal machines I clean them thoroughly at the end of the season and apply SiO2 wax to the inside of the impeller housing before storage. It serves a two fold purpose as it protects the paint and the hydrophobic properties help reduce the amount of slush build up. I also spray the housing down with WD40 which aids to reduce slush and offers rust protection. It’s way cheaper than rebuilding the transmission and reduces the load on the machine. Like they say….. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

At 5 mins you show an impeller on another machine. Notice the hole in the housing under the impeller. It is for the melting ice and snow (sun is shining on it during the day) to drain out. If yours doesn't have one, drill a hole..,5/16" is fine.

I actually ran into that with my in-laws small MTD that has the belt on the side. A couple years ago a friend brought me a NEW engine and his zero turn mower. It quit when his wife was using it. Turns out that she was wearing a sweater when she started, and then took it off and put it behind her on the seat. It eventually slipped off the back and got wrapped up around the crank. He didn’t need the new engine after all and it was too late to return it. $900 down the drain. Guess he should have brought the mower to me first. Good video. Honesty is the best policy.👍👍

Before I shut the machine down, I use a cheap broom with plastic bristles to sweep as much snow as I can off of the entire machine, inside and out, and then engage the auger for a few seconds to clear any snow I knocked loose around the impeller. I also have rubber tips on the ends of my impeller blades, made from pieces of a heavy-duty mudflap. Between the two, there's very little left inside the impeller housing when I park the machine. Seems to work well.

The guy up the street was moving, he said he had two snowblowers that needed work, one a craftsman 9hp 29 inch and a brute 8hp 28 inch, he said I can have the brute but wanted the craftsman but it was all beat up, the whole bucket was worn out, there was no scraper bar or skids left, they were somehow running it on just the bucket and on gravel, I told him it was just good for parts so he said fix the brute instead, the engine was good but but when I started it up the anger would immediately engage, I took the belt cover off and found that someone squeezed a belt on that was too small and causing the anger to constantly turn, the problem I had was when I put the model number in for a search it came up nothing found, I forgot about it for a few months and when we were supposed to get a lot is snow I went to my local lawnmower shop and he couldn't find the number, I have to hand it to him he eventually tracked it down and I got the correct belt then in had to install shear bolts because someone had used bent nails in their place, I got it running just in time for a 15 inch snowfall, I told the guy what I did to it and if he wanted it he had to pay me for the work, he said I can keep it, it's probably a Murray but works great. My next project is a Noma somebody was throwing out, it was in front of their house, I loaded it into my truck brought it home plugged it in and it started right up, the muffler however glows bright orange which means there's a problem with the valves I think and the idle is erratic, the chain drive needs some work because last winter the links came apart I also installed two tubes the tires are in excellent condition, I did use it a bit and this thing is built like a tank, the chute is all metal, I even was able to get a new chute cable and it needed a new auger cable, it even has a built in light, mustie did a video on one a couple of years back, it was his neighbors, the same as mine, I was thinking of putting a more powerful engine on it but I'm not sure, it all depends if the 9hp Tecumseh can be fixed.

Excellent video as usual Don! Right to the point and good quality video and plenty of additional tips that you do not have to add to make it a good video. That makes it an excellent video. Thanks.
What are you thoughts on the MTD Blowers with the 3rd stage. Do they add any value?

well, THAT was a lot cheaper than a blown engine....save the day again Don....really common occurrence with spring arriving and large fluctuations in temperatures and wet snow

What would cause the spark plug to be black? Can you change anything to prevent that?

Denny, this is kind of off topic, but not too far.
When you had the camera pointed down at the belt, there is a yellow dip stick there, going into what appears to be the drive transmission? I have Craftsman with the same thing. If I take it out, there is clean oil coming out, but I have never changed it. Is this a part of the crankcase oil?

It looks like there is a drrain hole in the bottom of the impeller housing on that second blower...seems like a good idea.

I think most brands have that now, either a hole at the bottom or the back. Its effect is limited for those who store in a detached, unheated structure, however.
