I have an idea for you, take a fish tank sized tank, illuminate each edge with a differant color light, and have, your adjustable gearing, but instead of stationary platforms, have magnetic spun stirring rods, and also permanent magnets on the side, so as to attract and variable the medusa of cyclones....
That's an interesting idea. I'd need to use something colored that doesn't mix with water to show up the currents. But it would have to be the same density of water so it wouldn't float or fall.
