For cleaning the grip, A magic eraser and water works really well to.

Make a paste of bar keepers & water then spread on the cork & rub to clean when rinse in a sink to wash off, itll rinse all the abrasive & soap away better than just rubbing off

Every time I get a new rod I apply two thin coats of Minwax polyurethane satin finish to the cork with a small piece of sponge…The finish keeps the handle looking new for years and prevents the pulp and filler from falling out with use…

Cool! Have you ever had issues with the grip being too slick? Or the finish flaking off at all?

@@greenhornflyhorn No…the first coat I do really thin…let it dry completely then apply a second coat just as thin…I found a small piece of synthetic sponge with tiny pours works best…when the second coat dries you will still have the texture of the cork…I think it works better than any commercial made “cork sealer”…It’s almost a must for saltwater rods if you want them looking and feeling good for a long time…

I'd say the barkeep and water is all you need. Woodglue/filler is going to essentially block the absorption of the handle and make it rigid.

Interesting, never had that problem. Maybe because of the glue I use? Who knows, seems to do the trick for me. Appreciate your take on the subject 🙂

After a few seasons somtimes i have to do this, usually i sand down wine corks and mix with glue. And sand again, i think its more a factor of the cork grain, back in the day we had so.e pretty bad cork, like it was what they wanted to get rid of. Now, i think its much improved and theres no distinction between good or bad cork.

Man, some of my orvis rods have horrible cork on em. Had to put in a bit of elbow grease to get them feeling good. I hear the cork industry has been having some issues

I do when it’s not too bad. After that, i find the bar keepers stuff gets it all out. Thank you for the tip
