- Опубліковано 4 кві 2020
- After multiple failed attempts at video game movies like Warcraft, Assassin's Creed and Tomb Raider to name a few, in blasts 2020's Sonic The Hedgehog movie to show how it's done. Despite being ridiculed by everyone upon initial reveal, with memes of the horrific human teeth Sonic design and the upcoming redesign, the film turned itself around and delivered an all around great cinematic experience, with heart, fun, cool visuals, as well as a great Jim Carrey performance. But what we're gonna focus on today is how Sonic the movie breaks the infamous video game movie curse, by comparing it to the aforementioned movies and seeing what it does different. Here's how to make a great video game movie. And to be clear, I haven't seen Pokemon Detective Pikachu.

Much like Detective Pikachu, I think the reason that the Sonic movie succeeded was that it was a movie first, and a video game movie second. The focus is not on telling a story with the character, but telling a story with the character along for the ride.
or something idk
other way around. telling the story with the character just being there makes it a pointless reference or character
@@treesap9789 sonic isn’t a pointless character, the fact that he’s fast is highly important, the fact he stands out is important, pretty much every aspect of his character is important
@@traktor420 That isn't what I meant. What I meant was it wasn't that Sonic just stood around as a character along for the ride, but he was also given additional story and his character had a lot more focus than the games gave him, which made him seem much more like a actual character than a simple icon to make a movie out of. You can't just insert a character dressed up like a iconic character then make them a entirely different character, or make that icon just a empty cardboard cut-out, instead you should give them character that makes sense which provides a much more interesting variation of said character.
@@treesap9789 oh ok

Well I mean, it IS hampfisted so heavily into your face "FEEL BAD FOR THIS CHARACTER!!!". Except, you know, Sonic was never the type to feel lonely as long as he had places to run and explore.
@@PikaLink91 Yeah, but he can never actually interact with any living being that can talk back for his entire childhood after landing on Earth. Which messes him up in the long run. Imagine that if the world is a play, you are forever stuck in the spectator box or can only act alone unlike the rest.
@@pigifi Didn't seem to be a problem in Sonic X. In this movie he goes around hiding because he's an alien and the owl told him to change planet if he ever got spotted, but in X he just immediately goes "Hi, I'm Sonic! Too fast for even the law so you may as well just leave me alone and let me do me". I know the majority hates X, but it is still part of Sonic's lore. True, in X he is quickly accompanied by his other friends so that he is not completely alone, plus he befriends Chris in the very first episode, but in that case, instead of having Sonic's loneliness throughout childhood be the catalyst for the plot in this movie, I'd have much rather the movie taken notes from X and have child Sonic run into a little kid and have the plot go from there. I mean why is Sonic befriending an adult to begin with? It's kids movie. The reason Chris was introduced to X was so that kids had an "avatar" to relate to. Most people may not have liked the kid, but that was because of his personality, not for Sonic having a human companion in and off itself.
Why does everyone says that slow motion speed thing is from quicksilver?
That thing started with hammy in over the hedge
@BHowardify great movie though.
Six Million Dollar Man?
Hammy , quicksilver , angry birds , then sonic
Also at least when Sonic did the slowmo scene a second time it had a purpose to the plot rather than Quicksilver doing the same thing again because it was cool the first time.
@@matti.8465 But it had a purpose the second time to. He saved people in the school.
This movie did 3 things well.
1: it listened to the fans. Most studios and directors will just shit-talk the fan base, call them entitled crybabies and their project will bomb. Instead, they listened to the fans and responded accordingly.
2: they played to the strengths of the actors. Jim Carrey OWNS his role as doctor robotnik, it's played entirely to his comedic strengths. He's actually a great drama actor too but his real strength lies in being cartoonish and high energy. Which fits here perfectly.
3: it holds true to the established character traits of Sonic and Robotnik, they didn't hollywood-ify them, they embraced them as they are and portrayed them as such.
Making a videogame movie isn't hard, but it's downright impossible when you cater to focus groups and what bloggers will like rather than what the existing fan base will like.
It's not just the fanbase you have to worry about when making a film like this, else Warcraft and others like it would have been a resounding success. You have to make the movie understandable for people who know nothing about the source material, which, granted, is unlikely for a character as popular as Sonic as almost everyone has at least heard of him, but still important nonetheless.
I think in-game sonic is a bit different than Movie Sonic.
@@MilkIsTheOne Yeah, I don't think that movie Sonic really acts anything like any other version of Sonic. That said, Sonic's personality varies wildly depending on which version you're referring to, so that really isn't a big deal.
@@lnsflare1
Sonic can do almost anything without friends.
Movie Sonic has this Genesis/Megadrive Tails-like demeanor.
Sonic's personality is already established without character development.
Sonic don't cower around instead makes a plan.
@@MilkIsTheOne No, he definitely didn't have the Genesis/Megadrive/Sega CD Sonic's personality, which was way sassier, just going by his idle animations (which were basically the only personality indicators that 16 Bit Sonic had). If you meant that he accepted like Genesis/Megadrive Tails, that'd be kinda tricky to prove since today version of Tails didn't have much of a personality beyond "cute and admitted Sonic," and the latter was pretty much entirely in the instruction manuals.
Maybe the Classic Sonic from Generations/Mania/Forces games, who was flanderized into just being somewhat generically cute and upbeat, but I can't think of any other version of Sonic that was anywhere near as neurotic (due to being isolated from any sort of interaction with another sentient person for around a decade) as movie Sonic.
Also, Sonic has been needing friends to help him win the the games fairly regularly since Sonic 2 where he needed Tails to fly him to the final stage.
Actually, movie Sonic is probably what you would get if you took one of the more hyperactive versions of Sonic (maybe SatAM?) and gave him Knuckles' isolated upbringing.

@@whosmansisthis6624 Thanks. I have heard that classic sonic is 11 years old so it would make sense for movie sonic to be 15.
@@robertmason9737 what's cool is that movie sonic is 13-14 . So it makes me wonder how they're gonna show an "aged" teen sonic in the sequel whenever it takes place
With a pinch of Boom.
Thank fuck they listed to initial complaints right
One thing I was surprised by was the fact that our main lead's relationship was actually very healthy. I was expecting Wachowski and Maggie to spend the whole movie bickering only to end up a couple at the end; instead they're mutually supportive, trusting and affectionate from minute 1. It gets a BIT strained when Donutlord is accused of terrorism and brings an alien over to her sister's house, but... well... that is entirely reasonable.
True. When their relationship sets up to be healthy at first, and then plot happens to challenge it, we root for them to maintain it, which is why they became engaging and interesting because these two continued to keep their cool until the very end. Plus, they ended up staying together with Sonic. Family goal success! It's truly wholesome ;w;
Plus, Maddie’s sister had some redemption in the second movie.
I know, right?! These "alien creature road trip" movies always seem to have a "divorce" arc with the human character, where he (because it's usually a male lead) is in bad terms with his wife/girlfriend/person he loves but never has tried to approach emotionally, and through the power of friendship with an alien, the relationship becomes magically better... I'm so glad they didn't do that! Tom's character as a whole was not pointless at all, as opposed to literally every other human character in other movies of the same style, which is something I enjoy very much!
It is actually the main reason why the adoption ending works. Only through a stable environment forged in the fires of a loving relationship can a child be reared and raised right. The display of rapture at the end was completely justified.
I also love James Marsden's character. Compare that to films like Hopp, and for once, you have a human sidekick who is not a jerk or a looser but actually a likeable and competent guy who lives in a nice home, has a healthy relationship with a beautiful and supporting wife and a decent job.
His only flaw is that he has to realize how much he does already matter to the people in his town.
I also love that he manages to hold his own against Jim Carrey, not by trying to out-Carrey him but simply by being the straight man. Their exchanges were so funny, I would have loved to see more of that.
The human character of hopp is only a bit of a jerk
But is a decent dude for the most part
I believe the biggest success to this movie had to do with a movie Hollywood studio actually LISTENED to criticism from the fans that are very invested in their franchises.

Journalists have become obsolete due to pandering exclusively to other journalists.
To be fair... if this weren't Sonic.... would we have loved it as much??? Don't get me wrong... it's a decent movie... but the fact that it's Sonic, the fact that Video Game movies are often a failure, and the fact that we had low expectations....
Wouldn't it be weirder if we didn't give it a higher score??? Plus; how many movies like this have we seen before?
In fact, there were many objective complaints even made by fans.... but... we as fans didn't care... cause we loved Sonic and were glad that we got a good Video Game movie...
And we as fans also appreciated the fact that they reanimated Sonic and had even more good feelings for this.
Just because a story has a recycled premise doesn’t mean it’s bad. What matters is the execution and this is the first time it works really well. They avoid alot of the bad cliches that come from this kind of plot and it felt like a Sonic movie from start to finish.
a 64% is kinda perfect for it. Its just a generic kids movie, that's amplified by having sonic in it. Its not bad, but its not groundbreaking by any means.
@@prizmovr8817 No I think that numbers too low, yeah the road trip plot may not be new but this is the FIRST TIME we've ever seen how Sonic and Eggman came to hate each other so much. Not only that but the writing and acting are all excellent in the movie, also none of the human charachters overshadow Sonic or Eggman Tom has his own storyline sure but it does'nt eclipse Sonic's arc and that is something you can't just shrug off because so many live action hybrid movies like this keep making the same mistakes. it definetly deserves more credit then just being a "generic road trip kids movie". It's not perfect but it is pretty good I think it deserves anywhere from a 79 to an 85.
so in conclusion:
1. Don't expect the audience to just know everything, make something that veterans may recognize, but also let the newcomers learn about the world what it is. warcraft fell to the curse because it was too reliant on fans to recognize the world, that newcomer just weren't drawn in.
2. make the game and movie fit in and make sense. just because it appears in the game doesn't mean it should be included, else it cause plot-holes or unnecessary questions. Assassins Creed fell to the curse because it's story works better in a game, as the movie audience can only wonder whats at stake if it's just a simulation.
3. do something new instead of copying the homework. even if your game has a good story that can easily be translated into a movie, don't just repeat your story from the videogame, rather experiment, try a new perspective, something fresh. Tomb Raider fell to the curse because it used the same story the game used, so there was no reason to experience both.
"Has an obsession to prove that he's superior to everyone else, and now that this unknown alien has shown up to endanger that superiority, it's his mission to restore it."

I remember a rumor (based on leaked set photos of the original stand-in for the Sonic CGI) that they always planned on going with the "Classic Sonic" look and that "Creepy Sonic" was just a marketing stunt.
Honestly, I wouldn't even mind if that was true. If the director/producers used the Internet's rage to get a bigger editing/CGI budget and more time to fine-tune the quality, then they did what they had to do to make the movie succeed despite Hollywood's attempts to undermine it.
@@greategretpictures Pikachu was okay but the acting was questionable and the dialogue was off

Which is, actually, a smart move. Make a smart and cohesive story that doesn't insult the audience, have something for both the fans and the non-fans to appeal to everyone, and make it new and interesting instead of a rehash of what came before.
Honestly, there’s something about this movie that makes me respect it so much. The fact that the studio listened to the fans and actually delayed the movie to improve Sonic’s design to please the fans is really heartwarming. It’s really rare that studios do this.

Please don't take this the wrong way, I'm laughing with you, not at you. I can't believe that the Sonic movie managed to reach this kind of emotional significance, and that makes me happy
The last part of friendship and isolation, it resulted in something interesting. Eggman being so isolated resulted in the government basically erasing him from existence in society, so no one knows or cares about him. And hell, Eggman actually proves his own hypocrisy by being alone as well, as he literally made rock to resemble his assistant, showing that in his madness, at his core, he desires a form of companionship. Sonic, meanwhile, is adored by the people that he befriended and they wanted to protect him, just like at the beginning, where the owl was willing to protect him from danger.

I guess what really make this movie a success is the fact the the director was the humblest person in Hollywood and accept the critic and improved for what the public wanted and because of that we can assume that he really care about the movie, he wanted to do the best for the franchise not the best for his ego as we see in many movies where the directors have crazy ideas that change the original material to something unreliable to the audience.
Tails appearing at the end isn't just some easter egg for the movie but also a jumping point for the narrative if there's a demand for a sequel

Actually, it makes sense. Out of all the major videogame characters, Sonic has the most media outside of games to utilize in world-building, plus a dedicated fanbase that adds their own content without much interference by SEGA.
I’d personally say that detective Pikachu broke the video game movie curse, but sonic cemented that it can be done again

What I like about the first Sonic movie is it's simple and easy to understand story that everyone can get behind and enjoy. The only Sonic characters we're introduced to is our hero and villain. Sonic and Eggman. And as for human characters they all serve a great service and influence to both Sonic characters.
I also enjoy the in-depth flaws the movie has given Sonic and Eggman. Sonic being a guy who wants to be a part of something, wants to be out of the open and build a bond with other people, because of how isolated he was for a very long time on Earth. Eggman is shown to have insecurities and a superiority complex, where he thinks humans are inferior to his perceptive and intelligence.
Like Kingdom Hearts 1, it's all Simple and Clean.
Sometimes your reviews give me more goosebumps than the actual movie. The explanation of the fight between opposite friendship notions was awesome.
The other reason that this movie works so well is because, unlike the other franchises you mentioned, Sonic was already established from early on in his franchise as a multimedia icon! He already had cartoons and comic books that had MAJOR differences from the games, so the movie did not have a hard time fitting in!
Ali Farris excellent point
yes i like bringing this point up myself every ttime i see someone talking about sonic breaking the video game curse. same can be said about detective pikachu and pokemon in general.
Super Mario, Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter had cartoons and comics early on its franchise before their respective film release too, and those were terrible. Not a good point.
@@gusty7153 Not having a set canon just means you have a simplistic template to work off of. Doesn't mean it easily lends itself to making a good movie. Adaptions will always take the simplistic basics of any material to try and form its own coherent story telling, but if it's not a good story telling, then the adaption was a failure. You can easily say Mario doesn't have a set canon either. It's just a plumber jumping on turtles and defeating a big dragon. Doesn't mean instant success, like the Mario movie which twisted that template into a crazy story that just didn't feel faithful to the games. The Sonic movie could've been bad but was clearly handled by folks that love Sonic enough to make a story worth telling for the fans. Simple.
@@SetnaroX i want to put great emphasis on the fact that sonic's early cartoons and comicbooks were extremely successful compared to the others you have mentioned. and alongside pokemon, this point is actually very valid.
and you brought up mario. there is a difference between lackign consistency and just simply lacking anything at all. sonic, is simply lacking a consistent storyline. mario doesn't have a storyline or anything at all resembling an established canon.
also mario was just one singular dud. most of the successful movies based off adaptations from something else came from short stories that got their plots expanded whereas most adaptation duds at the box office came from long and elaborate novels with complicated plots revolving around important details that get left out when movies are made breaking lore and overall alienating the main fanbase all while just being generic fantasies to everyone else. this also includes to most every film based off a videogame. its very hard to make a good balance between pre established fanbases and the general audience but with sonic, there isn't much to balance.
That last thing I tought of the lion king 2019: if it reminds you of the original movie you saw when you were a child then, why don't just watch the original movie again instead of this copy with no soul?
@MrBG1138 It makes no sense to me either, since the people in my life who are most likely to give money to these remakes are the ones that develop a burning, perhaps irrational, hatred for the remakes...then gets excited about the next remake as if nothing about the previous one angered them. It was a massive blessing in disguise when the virus basically killed any chance of me being forced to see the Mulan remake in theatres.

@@aronivarsson3493 Same. Hope they will give it a chance for a sequel. I would love to see the story with King Arthas und Illidan
Aron Ívarsson well considering there has been 5 years since it was released and it was butchered by the critics, I think there is little chances for a sequel... a shame; I heard they were planning a Trilogy... and honestly, among the tons of Fantasy Movies that tried to steal LotR, GoT and Harry Potter’s thunder across the past 2 decade, Warcraft was one of the best....
I enjoyed the warcraft movie for what it was: a movie based on the lore of a game I loved to play.
What I would have liked a lot more is the movie following the lore more closely.
Ongr MtGA I dunno; I am quite the WoW lore nerd and I think that most of the changes they made made senses to either simplify the story for movie purposes or could be use to build a sequel... it is better to see it as what Marvel did: use the original story as foundation but feeling free to add new details and changing things
In other words the sonic movie is really good because it's really damn good at re-contextualizing things from a game into a movie in a very understandable and enjoyable way for both fans and non-fans of the franchise

@@ahmadkazan7994 I think a monster hunter world (World, specifically. Monster hunter as a series before world actually has some pretty interesting lore) movie would work...so long as they don't do the same story the game did. The game's story is pretty bare-bones and doesn't have a lot of holding power, but that's because the gameplay was more important than the plot, so the plot was threadbare, though it still accomplished what it was made to do. Witha movie though, they rely entirely on the story holding water, so it would be a chance to make a good story instead of the mere push-powered trolly train the game's plot was.

If you told me years ago that sonic would have been the one movie to break the video game movie curse i'd be laughing my ass off.
It was surprisingly good and told some good backstory of Sonic.
What I really liked was that they actually built up on lore in a way that it sort of retroactively enhances the games. I mean, Robotnik's hinted backstory and eventual development from a slick, smug military scientist to a madman can easily be applied to anyone playing Sonic 1 or Sonic adventure. It just kinda works, you know?
