Sennheiser e609 vs Superlux PRA-628 MKII

  • I recently was looking for mics to mic a couple of guitar amps for living gigging, and came across these two amp specific mics on Amazon. They both get great reviews, but the e609 is more than twice the price. Do you get what you pay for? You be the judge. the quality between the PRA628MKII vs the e609 is a tough call, and obviously these are both new, so this comparison can't compare longevity and quality assurance. My personal opinion is that the sensitivity of the Superlux is minimal, and if it bothers you, it could be easily fixed with a simple gate on your mixer (i'm using the Behringer X18). Butfrankly, I couldn't actually here the difference with no gating. The only reason I know there was a difference was visual inspection of peaks on the PC.

the superlux is a little bit sharper with the hi frequencies , but since there is a low pass filter on almost every guitar track (at least in heavy stuff) that would make not a big difference i think . awesome video ! exactly what i wanted to know !
ps. : could you maybe use the direct audio files from the mics instead of the recording of a speaker in the room in the next video ?

Hi Dave = Thank’s for at great demo of the two mic’s. I’m going to order a Superux from Thomann now, and with no doubt. Keep it up 👍🏻

Wow! You have me sold on the superlux. I was switching back and forth between the two, and could barely hear any difference. At first I thought the superlux was a tad sharper on the highs, but switching back and forth it was really hard to tell. Run through the mixer at a gig it'll probably make no difference whatsoever. Thanks for posting this. I was looking at the Superlux but needed some kind of reference and this was exactly the video I was looking for. I really appreciate the time you took to do this for other players out there. Brilliant stuff!

Hi Dave, thanks for going through the hassle of testing the two mics. This is really helpful though. and what a surprising result I'll make use of this for our band because we will be recording more live gigs next year. Cheers, Tom #berlinbayband

Everyone forgets that back in the 90s their were a ton of drummers singing in bands on the club circuit, the e609 and e906 and the various clones of it were the best mic for Drummer vocalist in a live environment because the side address style microphone is the very best at rejecting drum bleed into a hot vocal mic. Nothing comes close to this style mic.

Sennheiser is better. Less peaks, more rounded tone. That being said, not different enough, that with a little tweaking of the eq, you can't get them close or matching. I'm guessing build quality may be where the true difference is 🤘🏼

Towards the end you said it all !! "I could not hear a difference" - Neither could I !! As with all things audio you can measure differences with equipment that cannot be heard with the human ear which is what I am supplied with !! Thanks for a good helpful video - I have just bought a Supralux from Thomann because they didn't have the Behringer in stock !! Oh that human ear I am supplied with did notice that you mispronounced Sennheiser as Seinheiser ! But that is forgiveable . I can only forgive Americans as my poor Mother was American (1906-1975) and My grand parents both died in America in their 40s - long before I was born !! So America is well laced into my history and for that reason I can never be too hard on any one American even Donald Trump who is psychotic and needs treatment and I don't mean that as an insult.

Sharper is better because you can blunt that more easily !! It is easier to roll back something you have than to boost something you haven't got !! Boosting any frequency will create noise or distortion which is what you want on guitar but not on recording.
I listened to a badly recorded cd by a local band and I kindly let them know about the distortion in the recording process as they did not know about the difference between controlled distorted instruments and recorded distortion. Lately I went to a JudieTzuke concert and was stunned at how good the live sound was. Distorted guitar sounds -Bass Guitar- keyboards -drums vocals all crystal clear and loud enough and NO Distortion in the "mix" - Some while ago at a Ronnie James Dio gig I couldn't hear the guitar until I put my fingers in my ears to attenuate the bass frequencies. I saw the operator on the mixer and said to him that the bass (frequencies ) were too loud and that I couldn't hear the guitar !! He just said that he was following instructions that they (the band) liked loud bass - I wonder to this day did they meant Bass guitar or Bass Frequencies !!

Using camera mic as intermediate recorder is not good idea. It does not matter how good the camera mic is. Distance matters most. More the distance more the room echo which adds to the original signal.

That's why I showed it digitally also. On youtube, it wouldn't matter what mic you used to record the video... it's youtube! so, yes, it'st he camera mic of the Zoom Q2N which is known for it's audio quality. Regardless, I was giving MY opinion, and showing it digitally. Biggest waste of my time is replying to you. Not that it matters. They no longer make the PRA-628. But thanks for commenting on a 2 year old video.

I don't see why not comment old videos? Many people watch 10 year old videos first time. Like I did yours. MY opinion is : mics matters of course but I would never use camera mic on youtube video talking about sound quality. Sorry about all bad things I said. Not personal. Reson I comment is I get very much too much awaken when otherwise decent people use camera mics on sound quality related videos. In that context it is waste of time and seriously unprofessional like I said. I really did not want to watch the whole video because it was susceptible from the beginning to have cam miking all the way till end without bringing up that real recording at all. So I just ffwed it little by little but could not found the info.(not gonna do it again if you don't tell the exact time.... )
Universally speaking cam mic roomy tone really hurts ears.

Difficult to tell any difference. Once blended into a mix almost probably near impossible. Nice thing if you could buy a stereo pair of Superlux for less than a single Sennheiser. The Superlux would probably not hold it's value as well as the Sennheiser. By the way it's Senn-heiser not Sine-heiser unless you're the only one on planet earth pronouncing it correctly and everyone else is wrong. Doubtful...

  • @skipnelson858

You are saying it all wrong the pronunciation of the word Sennheiser it isn't signhouser as you are saying it it is ( Sen ) houser

Skip Nelson sennheiser is German so if you want to say it correctly, it would be : " then hi there". And if you keep your tongue behind your teeth while the "th" it will sound German xD

    • @grilledspaghetti
      @grilledspaghetti 6 років тому +4

In German if you have a combination of "e" and "i" you pronounce the latter. In this case, "highser". Of course you're right about senn instead of sine though. Bugs me too.
      Good test beside that though.
