Sound Town CARPO L2 review
As a gigging musician, I have been lugging around speakers, speaker stands, cables, sometimes an extra subwoofer, and a powered mixer/amplifier to all my gigs as my PA sound system. It sounds great, especially for outdoor gigs where I need a lot of sound. But, it's a lot of stuff to carry and at indoor gigs it's overkill... I rarely turn the volume past 25% indoors, and often will just use a single speaker because space is limited and you're stuck in a corner when inside. I see more and more musicians using things like the Bose L1 or L2 Pro ($1300 on Amazon) or even more expensive, something like the Electro-Voice Evolve 50 for $1800.
But, here's the off brand, Sound Town! The CARPO-L1 gets a lot of negative reviews as not being loud enough. So, I bought the L2. It's a 12" sub, just like the Electro-Voice. And bigger than the Bose L1 (but not quite as big as their L2 pro). At a small fraction of the price, can it provide the sound you need?

      Great question. You can buy a new ProFX12v3 for about $360. So, at some point, fixing it may not be worth it if you have to pay somebody. For somebody who is doing it on their own for the first time, this probably would take 2-3 hours. But, this is probably a one hour job for somebody who knows what they are doing. What's a good hourly rate for a skilled audio technician? $100/hour? 200/hour? For the FX12, it might not be worth it. But, what if you had a larger mixer like a FX22 that runs almost $800? Maybe $200 or $300 would be worth it for the higher priced models.

    • @DaveGoodrumMusic
      @DaveGoodrumMusic Місяць тому

      I think what you are trying to say is that you have something plugged into Line 2. There is no ON or OFF switch for each line. The LEVEL for Line 2 controls volume. What are you plugging in to Line 2? Is this a XLR or TS cable? What is the cable connected to? Cables attached to nothing can create sounds when the other ends touches ANYTHING else and you should never do this. Also, when you plug in, hopefully you have the LEVEL turned all the way down, and then you can slowly turn the LEVEL up as you test your input volume (whether it's a guitar or a microphone, etc). That would be all my suggestions for diagnosing popping sounds. The Blue screen blinking definitely seems unusual. Maybe you're shorting it out? Try a different cable. Does it blink when you have nothing plugged in? Have you contacted support yet?

    Sounds great this,do you ever use the looper feature built into this pedal?

    • @DaveGoodrumMusic
      @DaveGoodrumMusic 2 місяці тому

      Yes, I love it. It's a perfect loop every single time. However, you do have to make sure you teach it enough for your loop. You teach to start the percussion, then the loop as the same length as what you "taught". So, if you need to loop the verse, and the verse is 16 count of E A B7 (as an example), then you need to "teach" that 16 count E A B7 verse to train the percussion. Then when you are ready to loop at some point in the song, you just hit the Loop button with your foot pedal, and the loop will automatically start at the beginning of the verse (when the percussion comes back around) and it will also automatically stop at the end of the verse (when the percussion comes back around again). It's a perfect loop every time using this method because you don't have to hit the loop button perfectly. Just click it at any point before the verse starts. For example, I could be playing the A in my E A B7 verse, and I can click the Loop button while still on the A at count 6 of 16, but it won't start recording your loop until you come around the next time to the E. I never worry about starting the loop perfectly and never worry about stopping it perfectly. In this video, I only "teach" the percussion the E C#m 16 count. So, that is as much as I would be able to loop. If I wanted to loop the additional chords in this song, I would not be able to do it, because I only taught a 16 count. The actual verse is E A C#m A B E. So, if I wanted to loop that verse, I would not teach that entire verse at the beginning. But because I don't solo in this song, I don't bother teaching the whole verse, and just a 16 count is enough to get a good beat going.

      @@DaveGoodrumMusic That's cool, very well explained ,it sounds complicated but like everything is probably intuitive after practice. I have a lot of experience with a twin pedal looper so I think I should just need to adjust the learning curve. It would save me having to loop a bass line with an octave pedal and set drum tempo or add rhythms.Would thin down the gear needed and concentrate on the music.Thanks for taking the time for this in depth reply,much appreciated. Hello there - Me again! i have gone with the Trio+. I have a question if you don't mind - I am using the desktop mode so going through my songs to work out what is the best style/genre for each song - but i wondered how you best controlled for the tempo style? I understand you can use the 'alt time'- half (red) & double (green)options.... so do you just leave it off for 'mid/normal' tempo?

    • @DaveGoodrumMusic
      @DaveGoodrumMusic 2 місяці тому

      For practice, I leave it blank, and if it works that way, great. But, if it's too fast, do it again with it set "red" for for slow, or if it's too slow, do it again with it set "green" for fast, and see if that works for you. There's really only two speeds, not three. When you leave it blank, it tries to pick the right one., but if it's not doing a good job of it, you may need to force it by selecting the correct alt time before you teach it.

    I don’t suppose you have looked at the mooer x2 drummer?? Torn between these two but not tried either!

    • @DaveGoodrumMusic
      @DaveGoodrumMusic 3 місяці тому

      I have never heard of the Mooer X2 Drummer til just now. Looks pretty cool, but it doesn't look like there is a loop function on it. That seems like a serious flaw if you want to build tracks with it on the fly. The way the bpm is determined with the Mooer is either by the speed knob, or tap tempo, before you start; you can't set it by strumming (it doesn't learn while you play). And that could be okay. If using the speed knob method, I'd have to make a notation of what tempo I wanted (and corresponding position of speed knob) for each song in advance if trying to play live in public... or use the tap tempo which could be tricky (I'd have to try it to know how well it works with big clicky buttons). So, if you want the drums to start before, or exactly, when you start playing, this is a good feature. For me, I'm fine with drums coming in after I strum a tempo on the Trio+... though for some of my songs starting before would be great, and I have pre-recorded for those songs. This is going to be a personal preference I guess. I see advantages/disadvantages to both methods. I like the fill feature on the Mooer, and I also like the way the Mooer ends better. The Trio+ just stops when you step on the stop button on the pedal (unless you have pre-recorded all the parts). It's sometimes awkward, so I play the last chord a little louder to cover up any weirdness in the way the drums cut out. And if you do want to use the bass (which I do for really simple songs, or if I'm prerecording, or just having fun in the basement), you don't have that option with the Mooer. It's not a show stopper, but it's a "nice to have" on occasion. Without actually trying it out, my conclusion is that the lack of a looper kills the Mooer for me. The speed setting could easily be worked with, and potentially advantageous, and the fills and endings are much better with the Mooer. And even though I only use the looper on a handful of songs, I do love my occasional guitar solos! I recently performed a gig with NO vocals, and it was purely building loops with percussion for two hours. So much fun!

    • @ryancorbett
      @ryancorbett 3 місяці тому

      I think I’d only use the drum part. How good is the learning? Like you, I’d be live gigging for a few hours. Also, do you manage to always find a style that works?

    • @DaveGoodrumMusic
      @DaveGoodrumMusic 3 місяці тому

      @@ryancorbett I use the Trio+ for about 60% of my songs, and "usually" have no issues with the learning. Occasionally the Trio gets wonky and I get some crazy rhythm, and I attribute to it human error or alcohol. :) When that happens, I stop the Trio real quick (foot pedal), and just play the song without it. Or, sometimes I'll make a joke that my drum machine must be on Meth, and then give it another try. :) For the songs I use the Trio on, I practice that song in the basement about a dozen times to make sure I can get the same rhythm every single time. If I don't get consistent results, I either add it to the pre-record list, or I just don't use the Trio for that song. I almost always find a style that works though. When I first practice a song with the Trio, I loop the guitar chords with the drums and then switch through a bunch of genre's and styles while it's playing, so I can hear the rhythm with the guitar to figure out what works. It's quite a bit of experimentation, but usually 10-15 minutes I've picked out the right mix and then I write it down on the ipad. Sometimes I'll write down two different ones even. One for a chill environment like a laid back indoor winery setting, and then a more raucous drum mix for my local biker bar I sometimes play at (or similar establishment). Also, sometimes you'll find that volume level for certain genre's is just too loud. "Rock" genre is always louder than the "jazz" genre. I always turn the volume up a bit for jazz, and down for Rock. I've never used the Heavy Metal Genre.

      not sure I understand the statement "kill spontaneous playing". It takes about 5-10 seconds to teach just about any song with just two foot pedal clicks. Also, if I'm out at a paid gig, there is nothing spontaneous about the songs I'm playing; I have a set list I am working through. If I get a request for a song that I haven't practiced with the Trio, then I simply don't use the Trio and play pure acoustic. Although, I have to say, I"d never seen the BK7m before, but it looks pretty cool. I'd have to dig into it. However, is this commercial for it straight out of the 80s? Cool and sounding good! No, I did not know that about DM- cool factiod. Questions. I have the pedal but don't use it currently. What exactly is it for- is it easy to set up? The two buttons on the Trio seem good enough. Does it disable those buttons to only gain one? Is there a way to trigger an outro- not a recorded part e.g., I am ripping a solo for 5 minutes and just want to end with a cool drum fill. I often press SEQ OFF so that section will repeat. I solo over that at will but it ends awkwardly. Why does the style changed all the time and the timing go nuts? I can fine tune and dial it in but it takes work. If I ever played out I would save multiple SD cards so it was ready to go- not on the fly. It can sound great but it can also sound terrible IMHO, like it has electronic ADHD. Tip: I use 2 "Y" cables and go out to a subwoofer and Studio Monitors. The monitors make the cymbals come alive.

      I use my Trio in desktop mode, so that I can easily reach the knobs, and use the foot pedal instead. The right foot pedal button starts the "learning", then click it again to finish learning, just like on the trio itself. The left foot pedal starts the looping. The center foot pedal switches parts, and I never use that. I wish I could assign it to do something else. The style doesn't "change" if you set the the style BEFORE you start learning. I have notes that will say "Country Style 4", and I set the dials to that, then start the learning and it stays Style 4. If you don't set the Style before learning (meaning it's blank and nothing lit up on style), then it will try to choose a style for you. Set the style and you should get pretty consistent results. I have pre-programmed a 11 parts to use for songs that sometimes are unpredictable, or have very long intros that I want to loop over, but for most songs, I just do it on the fly. The only issue I sometimes have is that it plays double time and sounds awful. I almost always set the Alt Time to Red (slower), and if I have to increase it I quickly hit the Alt Time button to double time. I run the drums out separately. You don't need a Y cable. I have guitar (amp) going out to one channel and then I plug another 1/4" cable into "mixer" for another channel. The drums only go out the Mixer channel when you do this, that way you can separate the two and add bass/treble/FX as needed to either channel separately. Good luck!

I use "Table Top" configuration (press and hold button 2 while plugging in to set it to Table Top the first time. you only have to do this once, unless you change SD cards). Regarding style changing, I don't really have an issue, since I change it between every song. If I don't change anything, it stays on Country 4. But, if the next one is "Alt Rock 1", I rotate genre to Alt Rock, then style to 1. I've gotten pretty quick at it. No issues. And you are correct, I should have said "YELLOW" for the alt time setting, not "RED". Regarding best chords, it's not really about chords. It's about the rhythm I perform almost 50 songs using this with all different chord progressions. The only time I have issues is when I am playing chords not directly on the beat. There's a whole section in the manual on teaching tips. Regarding Effects, I run both channels into a mixing board, which I can use to add effects to either channel. The bass is not great for most songs unless that song is very simple. But if you have a bridge or chorus with different chord changes then the bass wont match. Having said that, I like this better than the beat buddy for ease of use and flexibility. Having the trio in desktop mode gives me easy access to the dials between songs and then use the foot pedal to start/stop/loop. Plus I do use this for looping the guitar also. Perfect loop every time bc it forces a match of the percussion track. Plus I like the way it learns your rhythm. I dont have to tell it what the speed is. I play one round of chords and it knows the tempo. I use this live for gigs and I dont want to fumble around setting up the pedal between songs. Song ends, clear memory, choose the next style and start playing.

      @@jamesdeininger3759 100%. If you want to pre-record all your parts, that works great. I play about 60 songs in a 3 hour gig. I don't feel like swapping out SD cards every 12 songs. :) So, I don't really use that feature except on a few songs. I've pre-recorded 11 songs that I enjoy playing that have weird starts, and so teaching the Trio+ isn't an option for those songs necessarily. But, everything else I do on the fly.

    One thing I do not see mentioned is whether the Sound Town on board mixer has Reverb effects built in? I have the Bose L1 Which does NOT have any onboard effects. This is a bit of a draw back in my opinion. Let me know, thanks.

    • @DaveGoodrumMusic
      @DaveGoodrumMusic 7 місяців тому

      The only "effects" are the different DSP settings, and I would not really call them effects, it's more like equalizer settings. But, I would never play straight into this; I run my guitar and voice through the Play Acoustic (by TC Helicon) before sending to the Carpo L2. If you are gigging, I highly recommend adding something like this to your performance. The ability to add reverb, chorus and other effects to both your guitar and voice are pretty cool.

    To lighten my load, I purchased a pair of these a couple years ago. DJing weddings, they have been a Godsend with ease of setup. I have a 12" powered sub that is more than enough to give the system some punch when needed in larger crowds. They have worked flawlessly. My ONLY complaint is I wish they would have came with carry bags for the subs. I've tried a few different ones and nothing fits quite right.

    • @Good_Dave
      @Good_Dave 8 місяців тому

      not sure if they've changed the design, but the 12" sub on the bottom has a handle on the tops to make them easier to carry. They are quite heavy, so having a bag wouldn't really help carry these, IMO, but maybe would be good for protection. Or if you had something with wheels that would be helpful too!

    • @shawnwaldrop3702
      @shawnwaldrop3702 8 місяців тому

      There is a handle on the back top. Just like the EV ones similar to this design. Those have slipcovers. With openings for the handles. But, they don’t fit. And they’re like $120 each. Just the powered sub is shy of 35 pounds. I wouldn’t consider that heavy. I usually carry one in each hand with the array bags around my shoulders. The bags would be helpful to keep them from getting beat up during transport. I did follow a UA-cam video with a guy making custom covers for his speakers. I had custom made the pattern for the L2, but I don’t sew. He tried it with fabric fusing tape but the hot sun just melts that away.

    So would you say this works for a wedding of around 90 people? First to provide sound for the ceremony (probably wireless lavalier mics through a mixer because of number of channels needed) then for Spotify playlist music during the reception. I'm providing sound for such a wedding and considering alternatives to my old-school PA system of Peavey lunchbox powered mixer (must weigh over 30 lbs) and pair of passive 12-inch 2-way speakers on poles. I'm over 70 and lugging this old stuff is getting old as I am! Also: You said the system was plenty loud with all controls at full volume. Does it sound OK with the volume turned down? And I don't think you talked specifically about whether bass module has any power.

    • @DaveGoodrumMusic
      @DaveGoodrumMusic Рік тому

      It would depend on size of venue. For the wedding itself, I think you'll be fine. But, one of these will definitely not be as loud as 2 x 12 inch speakers at the reception. And if the reception is a big hall, or outdoors and you need to get the dance floor hopping, I'd say no. I'm envisioning 90 people to mean a very large venue. And I think for a reception that big, you need two speakers. I'd even consider an extra subwoofer depending on the playlist. You can always by two of these and pair them. But, if you are still lugging around your mixing board and now two sets of these, I don't think that would solve your problem. The specs say this thing weighs 45 pounds! Two of these might give you plenty of sound and pretty good quality too... but now you have more gear, not less.

    • @kpnorkin
      @kpnorkin Рік тому

      @@DaveGoodrumMusic Thanks. I believe it's going to be outdoors with a tent in case of bad weather. There is no big hall at the mansion where the wedding is happening. Since my current PA has been plenty loud enough for different sized bands at venues large and small, indoors and out, I guess that's what I'm going with. Also, if I went with the L2, then I'd need my mixer and my current one is a moderately heavy pre-digital Behringer - so, as you point out, I don't end up reducing weight or setup complexity. Thanks for helping me think this through.

    Do you recommend these speakers for dj

    • @DaveGoodrumMusic
      @DaveGoodrumMusic Рік тому

      It all depends on how big the area is and type of music. If you are looking for that body shaking bass, I'd go with a dedicated subwoofer type system. Or if it's a larger indoor area and they want the music to be deafening, then this won't do it. Though you could buy two and pair them, which I have not tested. Or if you are outdoors, I think you would need something bigger. I have a different system for outdoors. But, I do still think this could work in many situations still. It just depends.

    • @DaveGoodrumMusic
      @DaveGoodrumMusic Рік тому

      i figure the compressed air gets rid of a lot of the dust that are in and around the electronics, and then use the electronics cleaner. If you want to do the cleaner first, no issues, but to me it makes more sense to do the compressed air first. And yes, lubricate last. You want it as clean as possible before adding lubricant, which is what I do in this video.

    dude, starting with your levels cranked? …not how it’s suppose to be done. Amateur move….Invalidates your review immediately. You’re a really nice guy who’s well intentioned and wants to be helpful to other consumers. Please take some time to educate yourself on sound design. Also, setting up a stereo interface on a single speaker is pointless. you’ll get much better clarity and volume going mono. I’m not an expert lou trained technician, but i’ve played 100+ professional performances (meaning I was paid) every year since 1998. I learned by f’ing up a lot, so please don’t take it personally. i’m still learning. Just encouraging you because your reviews can be a valuable resource. You’re the first hit when i searched Soundtoen Carpo L2. Wish you the best.

    • @DaveGoodrumMusic
      @DaveGoodrumMusic Рік тому

      Thanks for the feedback. Just FYI, it's not a stereo setup. It's mic out and guitar out, so that I can control volume levels for each input. Maybe you didn't read the full description of why I'm doing this test? In the last paragraph I explain that I had read reviews from other people that the other version just wasn't loud enough, even with the volume cranked. They said it was clipping constantly. So, that's really what I wanted to test... is it loud enough. You'll notice that's the only thing I really talk about, over and over, doing multiple tests.... is it loud enough? For me, the answer is yes.

    Wow! Painstaking work! Impressive. I have a Mackie ProFX12v3 and the USB channel 11/12 fader left channel drops out and crackles. I have to pot it up to full max to get both channels to read on the VU meters. And sometimes I get levels when it's potted all the way down 🤔. At times I can just tap on the fader knob and audio jumps on with the fader completely down. It's really wonky and I'm not a super tech like the guy in this video. I was thinking I may need to just clean it out with compressed air or one of those computer air blowers. Any suggestion from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

    Did this also reduce noise and humming?

    • @DaveGoodrumMusic
      @DaveGoodrumMusic Рік тому

      If you have a constant hum or buzz, that's likely some sort of electrical interference or a transistor or capacitor going bad. First, determine if the buzz is from the board or from something plugged into the board. If you have a buzz or hum with NO inputs, then the buzz is caused by the board. If the buzz only happens when something is plugged in, does it happen on every input, with every device? Go through the process of elimination to isolate the problem. You could also try a different power source to see if it makes a difference. Try a completely different electrical circuit in the house or buy a power conditioner strip like the Furman Power Conditioner strip. If you still have the buzz, then you have serious issues and a cleaning won't help.

    Everyone forgets that back in the 90s their were a ton of drummers singing in bands on the club circuit, the e609 and e906 and the various clones of it were the best mic for Drummer vocalist in a live environment because the side address style microphone is the very best at rejecting drum bleed into a hot vocal mic. Nothing comes close to this style mic.
